Actually, GNU/Linux isn't really a competitor. Redhat, with a Linux kernel, GNU software, X, and Gnome is a serious competitor. SuSe is another serious competitor with KDE instead of Gnome. Mandrake is yet another competitor. Debian probably doesn't qualify as a competitor, but there are several Debian-based distros that do. And, if any of the current distros go under, it wouldn't be that hard for someone else to create yet another GNU/Linux based distro to compete with MS.
Why? The farting garbageman is cheaper, easier to find, and apparently gets higher ratings. The networks would dump sci-fi in a minute if they thought flatulent garbagemen were more profitable.
Sad, but true. Frankly, I think Enterprise was a big mistake, and got bungled from the start, but I'm not looking forward to its demise for just the reason you mention.
As for Friday nights, well, that's what TiVo is for, right?
The problem isn't with me (or any other Tivo user) watching it. The problem is, it probably won't last long in the "timeslot of doom". My guess is it will be dead by January, and replaced by the new "How to Marry a Space Alien" reality show.
Frankly, I'm not sure what the point of Freenet is. If I want to rant that Bush (or Kerry) is a fucking idiot, I can do so on the regular web. And if this country truly becomes an anti-free-speech dictatorship, they'd shut down Freenet anyway. And I have no interest in CP, or illegal warez, or plotting to overthrow the government.
Physical shape DOES make a difference. 20 years ago, I didn't even think about taking long walks; I just did it. Then I got a desk job, a car, and 80 more pounds. Now I have to talk myself into walks that I would have laughed at in the old days.
If I'm walking in the forest, I'm going to keep track of where my feet are going. There are no cliffs where I walk, but with all the roots and branches on the ground, it would be very easy to catch my foot on something. If I don't know the terrain, I'm going to be a whole lot more careful. I don't object to signs, but I certainly wouldn't rely on there being one. I'd assume that there was a dangerous pitfall ahead until I verified otherwise.
3) At least one mirror has a file claiming to be 2005.1. While Gentoo is great, I don't think that it's being delivered from the future. (At least not yet.;) )
You never know with Gentoo. IIRC, Gentoo advertised a 2.4.19 kernel when the latest stable was 2.4.18.
I agree that the last season of Mutant X sucked worse than the earlier seasons (which, themselves, sucked). My problem is, they won't replace it with anything better. They'll probably put on yet another (un)reality show in place of it.:(
I recently bought a new machine with bleeding edge hardware. It took me awhile to get Linux working on it, and in the meantime I used Cygwin. It was a short-term solution, but better than nothing.
Some people want an OS that upgrades every 6-12 months. That ain't Debian! Stable changes every 2-5 YEARS! Testing/unstable is in a constant state of change, which might be ok for a developer's desktop, or even a homeuser, but not for corporate use.
But will installing with debootstrap find my hardware? My current hardware is more Linux-unfriendly than the other machine (which I couldn't get raw Debian on). And, though Knoppix 3.3 detects all my hardware, I had problems going from Knoppix to Sid.
But I would if Linux suffered from viruses like certain other OS's.

5) WTF were Ferrengi doing in Federation space in Archer's time? They were unknown in Kirk's day!

So, how do you explain the dinosaur fossils?

But, I don't want to know what a bear does with his beer in the woods!
I'm thinking about trying it too. I like Slackware, but I'd also like a "just works" distro, and Suse seemed more reliable than RH/Fedora.
Nobody will be able to spell it right. It's snikclefritz, er I mean snucklefratz, er, Oh shit!
Olfactory Basic? Are you implying that Basic smells?
Well, I have removable optic implants that give me eyesight far exceeding my natural vision. Ain't contact lenses great?

Well, there's, er no that got cancelled. There's always, er no they axed it too. Well, my favorite was, er wait they killed it last year.

True. The Debian installer needs to suck on 11 platforms.

Well, I've never tried Gentoo, but my understanding is that it does NOT have a real installer. But it's still easier to install than Debian!
I'm sure Sarge will come out with a 2.6 kernel. Of course, by then everyone else will be using kernel 3.4.
The impression I got of the 3 branches is:
Debian Stable: solid as a rock - and twice as old.
Sarge: Will probably work, but if something breaks it will take 2 weeks to fix.
Sid: The branch most likely to break, but it usually gets fixed quickly.
