Long term maintainability doesn't mean squat if you can't get it installed in the first place. I don't need a fancy GUI with lots of eye-candy; Slackware installs great. But I never did get "raw" Debian on my last machine, though I'd installed many other distros, including Slack, with no trouble. I also want to add that I use Linux on a home desktop, not a server.
My current machine is the least Linux-friendly machine I've used, and I haven't gotten sound working under Slackware. But it DID work under Knoppix 3.3.
The problem with OS/2 is that there were never enough OS/2 apps. OS/2 claimed to be a "better Windows than Windows", but IME, Windows apps crashed worse under OS/2 than they did under real Windows.
There are advantages to having marketshare. Maybe if Linux had 20% of the desktop, we could get drivers for the snazzy new hardware faster. But to get the desktop market, Linux will have to play to "Joe Sixpack". Frankly, it wouldn't bother me if Linux is used by a n00b who never even heard of a command-line. As long as I still have my CLI, GCC, and VI, the n00bs can use their user-friendly desktops without even realizing it's all Linux.
The question is, how long is it yellow? As long as I have time to clear the intersection on yellow, or time to stop before it turns red, no problem. But if the yellow is too short, THAT would be dangerous!
EXACTLY!!! Once, when I was driving with my GF and talking, I approached a bad curve in the road, and saw an accident with police cars around it. I literally stopped talking mid-sentence while I concentrated on the road. My GF could plainly see why I stopped talking. A talker on the phone wouldn't be able to.
Maybe I should run in those places. In many urban areas in KCMO, there ARE plenty of loose dogs, and they frequently go after runners. Sometimes backing away from a dog saying NO works, sometimes the dog just keeps coming.
"Did you read Microsoft's HCL before buying that board? Damn, why do they even put one out?"
Nope. In retrospect, I should have, but I bought new computers before without such problems, so I ASSumed I wouldn't have any with this one. Besides, why should Joe Sixpack have to do research when he KNOWS the new computer will work with the OS that's preloaded on it.
"Hehe. Well I guess since Windows can't install on PPC it will not be ready. Oh wait you're ONLY looking at x86's "Joe Sixpack" And why should I walk out of CompUSA when I can walk out with Walmart's?"
But you CAN go into the Mac "ghetto" and get a PPC preloaded with a "Joe Sixpack" OS. But none of those include Linux either. And AFAIK, all you'll see in Walmart's brick & mortar store are Windows boxes.
It may not be Linux's "fault", but it IS a problem. I recently got a brand new AMD64 with all sorts of NVidia crap. I'm having problems getting Linux on this box, and I've used Linux successfully on at least 3 prior computers. Until Linux can install on as many computers as Windows, or until you can walk into Comp USA and walk out with a pre-configured Linux box, Linux won't be ready for Joe Sixpack.
This from a Debian user? Er, pot meet kettle.

I usually use ZZ (capital letters no preceeding colon) to exit. It does the same as :wq, and I learned it first.
I thought that was S&M&B&D!
Not quite. The Scream (tm) got the press, but Dean was already getting his butt kicked. The Scream (tm) occured during a conssesion speech.
Why not? I always thought C++ was a perfect language for OOPS!
For pizza, I'll give up my OL banking ID, password, SSN, and mother's maiden name.

"Debian users need new news too I guess."
So, what is 2.2 up to by now?

Do you have confirmation from NetCraft?

I wondered who the junkman sold my old clunker to.

Does running make the dog poop?

Yeah, but they're 18! They haven't had time to get out of shape yet.
Shoot, I'm waiting for someone to install a live badger in Darl's ass!
Unions DID help the working man. The problem is that they became big and corrupt.

Yeah, they do. If you've seen one BSOD you've seen them all.
