Well, I guess if that depends upon whether you think a bunch of celibate men that think an invisible supernatural being is listening to them are "authorative".

I've looked at the bishops document and it contains nothing to do with the science of stem cell research.

  4. Cellular internet access in Europe on Beyond 3G — Practical Cellular Internet Access · · Score: 1

I regularly travel between several countries in Europe and would like to use one method to access the internet in all countries. But what I've found is that the "roaming" charges are huge, and if you get, say, access from a UK mobile company it treats the rest of Europe as "abroad" and you pay huge roaming charges, even if it is with the same company.

Anyone know of a way to do this, with good speeds and reasonable prices?

Over here in Europe I am increasingly hearing people who say they don't want to travel to the USA at the moment, whether for tourism or business. The effect of this kind of thing on tourism would be fairly easy to measure, however the effect on business generally - if businessmen outside of the USA don't want to travel there - is impossible to know.

I thought the Republicans were supposed to be "pro-business" - surely they can understand the potential negative consequences of this kind of thing? Having said that, they don't seem to be worried about the negative effects of their neanderthal foreign policies, so perhaps not.

The iPod is a design classic.

Microsoft have essentially copied a classic. Which would you prefer, a VW Beetle or a copy that looks similar to it and has a couple of extra features? A Harley Davidson Sportster or a similar looking bike.

The big mistake Microsoft has made with the Zune is copying. It's a music player - there are any number of physical forms it could come in, why did they just copy the iPod?

This kind of issue highlights the importance of "soft power". For those of you who have never heard the phase, it basically means the power you get from people trusting you, and from having moral authority.

As you might have guessed, it is out of favour with the current administration, who prefer military "hard power". Previously, the USA could have said to the rest of the world "trust us to manage the Internet" and much of the world would have gone "ummm, ok!". Now the USA has lost much of its soft power, it makes it much harder, and "hard power" doesn't work well in this kind of situation!

This is a common argument about Microsoft. However, it is only partly true. Microsoft has shareholders. Microsoft cannot just throw money away, it has to be something that will potentially bring big profits in the future.

  12. Re:Those who give E-voting a bad name... on Quebec Bans Electronic Voting · · Score: 1

Ok, your design seems reasonable, but essentially what you describe is using the electronic device as a printer. I don't think that is what most people mean when they talk about electronic voting. Also, it does seem like a complex solution to fairly simple problems - you can have boards printed with instuctions in different languages, and I'm not convinced that electronic devices are necessarily easier for disabled people to use that other, simpler methods. However, if we are to have electronic voting then your specification is the type of thing I would like to see.

  13. Re:Those who give E-voting a bad name... on Quebec Bans Electronic Voting · · Score: 2, Insightful

Advantages of electronic voting over paper voting:

    1) Faster to get the results.

    Disadvantages

    1) Independant observers cannot observe that votes are being counted correctly.
    2) Voters cannot easily understand or see how the system works.
    3) Voters are likely to distrust a system they cannot see functioning.

I think the disadvantages greatly outweigh the advantages.

I don't know if you have ever seem a normal (non-electronic) voting booth run properly, but it is a marvel of common sense and simplicity. I don't understand why anyone would want to replace that.

This suggests to me that 2D space is actually better than 3D space for many sorts of games - Worms and Lemmings are good examples.

If 3D user interfaces were better then we'd be using 3D versions of desktop applications by now. Clearly Photoshop or Microsoft Word with a 3D interface doesn't make much sense, so why should it for online applications?
