That sounds horrendous. I will say, though, that the business world isn't immune. Programming in general often ends up this way. I worked at one job recently where we were in "crunch time" for 8 months, 10-12 hours a day plus weekends. The stress drove me to quit. This is just a terrible industry (programming) frankly. Assuming you want to have a life and be treated humanely. Congrats to those of you who have found an oasis in the desert.
Yeah, it probably was. Problem is, tons of people on the SuSE lists reported no problems with that board. In the end, I guess I went with the path of least resistance. It cost the exact same amount. Maybe I'll have to upgrade to the future in another few years, but until then I'll be able to just use my computer and not worry about it. Hopefully 64-bit support gets better fast. I want to get on that bandwagon. Now's just not the time.
No, they weren't pissed. Besides, it didn't work the second time. I'll admit the first time was my bad. I should have lived with my choice and just put a bit fan on a it, but the second time around it flat didn't work. And they have a 7-day no questions return policy. It's a major chain. PC Club. Very friendly and helpful.
This is an aspect of this whole thing being overlooked. I personally went through this last week. Bought my first new computer in 4 years (I run Linux, I stretched my hardware dollar). Going from a P3 800 to a P4 3GHZ. It ran like a dream. Very zippy. Compiles scream. Only problem is, so does the fan.
So I return it for an Athlon 64 3200+. Havoc ensues. I can't get clean installs of SuSE 9.1 half the time. In 32-bit or 64-bit mode. No idea why. Updates wreck the system. The filesystem corrupted EVERY SINGLE TIME. I did probably 30 installs. Removing video cards, flipping switches in the bios. 32bit/64bit, swapping hard drives, everything I could think of. Memtest86. Memory checks out fine (in 32 bit mode, in 64 bit mode Memtest imploded). If I ever got a working install for more than a couple minutes it was because I removed some RAM and even then the system ran slower than my old one.
In the end I went back to the P4 and slapped a Zalman on it. Now it's quiet AND it's fast again. No hassles.
Maybe it was just my motherboard. Or the motherboard/RAM combination. Or a bad CPU. Who knows. All I know is two sets of P4s with a Foxconn motherboard? No problems. Athlon 64 3200+ MSI K8MM? All kinds of havoc
I don't know about that last part, but I would agree regarding the overlooking of the obvious. i.e. That by and large the P4 just works whereas the AMD64 is more of a headache. I went with a P4 last week. Worked great. Changed my mind because of noise and heat and returned it for an Athlon 64. The system ran slow, filesystems were corrupted when I could get a clean install, which took numerous attempts and required me to pull the ram. In the end I went back to the P4. It just works.
Even including all the bugs and open ports, not to mention the draconian registration scheme. The funny thing is, that licensing scheme drove me from Windows to Linux full time like 4 years ago when I heard about it. Once I made the switch, though, I saw such huge advantages in terms of stability and security that I never want to go back. Ever. I run VMWare with XP when I want to do.Net stuff or run apps required for Windows, but if I ever get a virus I just delete the directory, copy back from my "clean" VMWare install and start over. Having Windows in a nice little box like that makes it infinitely more tolerable. Especially when I only use it once a month or so.
Because we're all shareholders, remember? Except the 50% of the population that isn't, like those of us still trying to pay off the student loans we took to get us into white collar jobs and out of the dying manufacturing industry. We're the real suckers. Thousands invested in a future that was pulled out from underneath our feet.
Nevermind the fact that what happens if we go to war with China or take sides with Pakistan against India? If that day ever comes we'll...
A) Have no manufacturing base from which to build weapons that aren't built from parts in the nation with which we're going to war..
or..
B) All of our IT (and often our personal information) will be in the nation with which we're at war.
The point being that in order for a nation to remain self-sufficient they need to find a way to keep some level of capacity to perform all vital services at home. Otherwise they leave themselves heavily exposed. I know, I know, a country with a McDonalds has never went to war with another country with a McDonalds. So goes the theory. Something tells me this barrier will fall someday too. And when it does we'll be on the wrong end of it.
Mod this up!! This is the best summation of the ridiculous of this argument that I have yet seen. If you don't have a job... If you don't have money... what advantage is it that Indians have more money to spend and goods are cheaper (assuming the latter is true)? Great, goods are cheaper. Now I can go take the lint out of my pocket and...
Or, like the previous poster said, I can wait a few generations for the benefits to kick in. What should I do until then? Move to India? I know, "move up the ladder". That's right, because there are so many available rungs up the ladder. All the laid off IT folks can be managers for all the Indian programmers. There can be like 4 managers for every outsourced programmer. It will be like Office Space except over the phone and WE'LL be the ones asking for TPS reports. What a grand vision of the world.
Is it possible to do this? Easily? I recently bought the VHS copies (I'd long ago sold them, thinking stupidly that the DVDs were right around the corner) out of desparation, knowing they might be the last pure copies I'd ever come across. I have a VCR solely for these. I hate Lucas.
KDE is fast? Breaking news to me. I've been using Gnome since 1.4 IN SPITE of its usability problems because it doesn't require 256MB of RAM and run like a turtle hitting the bong. I agree that copying Windows is dumb, but most people use Windows, so maybe that's their thinking.
And right now Sony has them and Microsoft doesn't, for the most part. And where do these games, the ones the Japenese (and Americans) play in droves, come from? Japan. They brought us Fire Emblem, Disgaea, La Pucelle Tactics, Final Fantasy, etc. As long as Sony has that in their corner, the XBox will just be another system on which you can play Madden. And *maybe* it will have better graphics. Nothing more.
I agree. This was the only bummer to me. I know they have to end the Harry/Peter thing, but I really hope they make it a minor part of #3. I'd much rather see a 3/4 made and have them do a fun treatment of the Venom arc. Venom was my favorite Spidey villain ever. And how fun would HE be on the big screen?
Personally, I don't think she was bad at all. It's just how she looks. Her face (maybe because of the droopy eyelid thing) can only express emotion in so many ways. I don't know if the reviewer wanted over the top weeping and a Joker-like smile when she was happy, but I thought Dunst pegged it. Mary Jane is kind of floating through life. Successful, but not quite happy. Kind of in a fog. And at the end... well.. nevermind. It's a great movie. One of the best action movies I've seen in over a decade as well.
Mod this up! I agree totally. I have an XBox and I posted something similar to this. The thing Microsoft is missing is that this gap isn't that great. So compatibility is a MUST if you're going to keep current XBox users from either...
(A) Cutting and running to Sony once they realize their 3-year old or less system won't be getting any more new games or...
(B) Sticking with the current XBox, thus undercutting the new XBox2.
The XBox is a first generation console competing in very dangerous waters (i.e. going against Nintendo and the behemoth in gaming that Sony has become). The XBox has done relatively well, but in terms of graphics capabilities I think the average gamer will be hard pressed to find a terribly large difference between the quality of XBox and XBox2 graphics. This isn't like the difference between PS1 and PS2. The difference there was so stark and the years between the systems so great that even if Sony had NOT been backwards compatible I'm confident they would have dominated based purely on getting their first, having the titles, and having the best graphics (at the time). Right now, in terms of graphics, Microsoft has a lead. However, it's a lead that won't grow much with XBox2 if at all.
What's the point of all this? This point of all this is that the leap from PS1 to PS2 was so great that I could see people making that jump even with out backwards compatibility. The leap from XBox to XBox2 isn't going to be that great to the average gamer. Therefore, how many kids or adults with XBoxes are honestly going to look at games like KOTOR, Madden, etc. and say to themselves that the current XBox just isn't cutting it and that they NEED an XBox2? I know I won't. I don't know who will.
Oh look, there are a few more polygons, time to upgrade. I don't think so. The XBox as it currently stands now is great. So unless they plan on maintaining two systems, I think they're shooting themselves in the foot big time. I don't think the desire to upgrade will be THAT great.
This is very true. Case in point Disgaea and La Pucelle Tactics. Two games I would love, since I'm a Strategy/RPG freak. But I can't justify shelling out the money for the PS2 just to play two games. It sucks that these aren't out for XBox (which I do own).
Here's a novel idea. If you don't have time to take care of your kids, don't have kids. I know, crazy concept. Craaaaazzzzyyyyyy.
I guess somewhere along the line having kids became a necessity of life.

I would posit that if you're embarrased to be seen playing video games in public you're possibly not as mature as you think you are.

"somewhere between lousy and sub-par"??
That's being quite generous.
Steve Jobs angry at P2Pers
Sounds like time to use a new distro.
HAHAHA
I had the same thought. Hey, it looks more and more like Windows. Congrats.
