I am wondering where they are going to put the additional two lasers. I have been inside of the building and it is already the size of a football field.
UR is planning for an 82,000-square-foot addition to the back of the laser lab. The town of Brighton Planning Board is having a special meeting at 5:15 p.m. May 19 at the laser lab. The meeting will include a tour for board members and neighboring residents and a discussion of expansion plans.
Ok then I actually read the article and saw that they were in fact planning on building an addition to the lab. It is good to know!
I don't think it would fit on any shark =)
It is not quite as extensive as the link posted with the thread but it gives a quick synopsis of the story. If you want more details I suggest reading the other article.
Businesses say the added fees are the best way to manage rising costs and at the same time assign them directly to the consumers who use the services.
Funny because I thought we were trying to break out of a recession. This sure sounds like one of those generic quotes made by managers to give the employee who was just laid off a reason not to be angry. Maybe firing people is the better way to go, if they want to cut costs and increase their profit margins. It is certain that customers are price sensitive, given the choice. If prices are reaised across the board by all the competing companies than the consumer must become accustom to paying for that service that used to be free. If a business figures out a way to pay for the cost of providing that service without charging the customer than they will most likely switch if it fits their company image. People with a lot of money want to spend more than the average customer with the idea in mind that the product or service that they are getting is better.
He resurfaced in 1992 to beat Spassky again, in Yugoslavia. That got Fischer indicted: The Justice Department alleged he had violated U.N. sanctions imposed on Yugoslavia. If Fischer reenters the United States, prosecutors say, he faces arrest.
The match broke sanctions imposed by the United Nations and in a controversial move he was indicted in the United States. President George Bush, the father of the current president, gave his personal approval for the legal action.
I don't understand why the UN or the US wants to talk to Bobby Fisher. Who cares if he has anti-US views. Alot of us disagree with the foriegn policy or other actions of our governement. This doesn't mean that we all should be Subpoenaed for questioning by our government. I might have mistook the reason why they want to talk to him in the first place. It makes no sense that he is not able to play chess in the world circuit.
Judging from this example it would appear that the obscenely rich Beast intends to use non-profit organizations in desperately poor countries to subsidize its promotional ambitions and its sales strategy.
They could have certainly handled this better. They should have turned it into an opportunity to donate the money and get the kids on their platform. That way we wouldn't even see the article here on / . cause everyone knows we don't praise M$.:)

Can anyone recommend some good chess strategy books? I found this link but it does not give a very good indication of what book would be better than others. I guess it would have to depend on what I want to read about since it is a game of strategy.
So I was interested in how many readers are able to beat the computer when playing say the ChessMaster 7000 - 9000 series? I was interested in buying a chess game that teaches you tactics and strategy. I had heard good things about the ChessMaster series. Are there better titles out there? I think for what they offer it is really good. You can look at most of the famous past chess games to see how the professionals think about the game, well I guess if you could understand them I guess you would be wasting time with the game.

The Blockbuster Pass is $29.99 a month. We can compare the two services based on a couple of different things. The first is the time it takes from when you rent the game to when you actually get it. At Blockbuster it is immediate and in this impatient age of information that is not the best option for some. This is again evident from the review of RedOctane, it appears that he did not like the waiting involved for the new games to get to arrive in the mail.
One/. poster and RedOctane user had a better idea than the person who wrote the review of the service. Que up a bunch of games so when you do return one game that you have out then another is more than likely on its way. So to resolve the issue of how RedOcatane service operates as written in the review, it may come down to that the reveiwer was using the service incorrectly. In grade school we are taught to take a positional stance on the articles that we write. The reason for the reviewer's dislike of the RedOctane service may come down to him purposely taking a position of dislike in his article and thusly trying to write prose that portrayed this.
The 2nd way we can compare the service is based on how you interface with the rental company. RedOctane is online/mail-in. Blockbuster is live. There are going to be different strategies for each service that people will learn to enable them to get the games that they want to rent. Slashdot posters have suggested strategies for both in this post. In order to answer this question you will have to ask yourself, "Do I mind waiting for that game to come in". This gives no mention to how you prefer to wait for the new games to come in. Do you want to call your local Blockbuster weekly to see if that "hot" title has come in or do you want to take your chances and see if you are the lucky person on the RedOctane que to get the game.
I think I could go right on comparing the two services, making conjectures on what I am not sure about, for you see I don't own a gaming system and play everything on my computer. It comes down to how you like to rent your games. There are going to be advantages and disadvantages to everthing.

Fred is almost right. The holes in the photo mark the absence of an material that is the size of an atom. From an economic point of view, conventional devices and materials will continue to be employed until they become impractical. Efforts devoted to push conventional approaches as far as they can go [13, 15, 47] continue to be extremely important. In this paper, we review the approaches to circumvent or surmount the barriers to device scaling. These approaches generally fall into two categories: new materials and new device structures. We describe materials innovations for the gate stack and the transistor channel. We also review device structural innovations such as the double-gate FET. While we focus this paper on these unconventional approaches, it is expected that innovations in conventional technologies such as etching, CMP, dopant profile control, and contact formation (silicides) will continue to be advanced and needed even for these "unconventional" approaches. Our application focus is high-performance systems. One may well arrive at a quite different conclusion if considerations are driven by other applications (e.g., low power, analog, sensor systems).
While nanotechnology may be seen by many as a successor to silicon microelectronics technology, it is clear from the results to date that it will be many years before nanotechnology can reach the level of maturity of the present silicon technology. The deployment of nanotechnology will most probably occur first in niche applications that complement conventional silicon technologies. Future social and application changes will further the shift from microelectronics to nanotechnology on a time scale of decades.
In the near term, there are many avenues for system performance improvements stemming from device, circuit, and system optimization that are yet to be exploited, which may provide orders of magnitude of power-performance tradeoff. However, this may call for system products based on application-specific device, circuit, and system designs, as opposed to today's general-purpose approach. Despite some speculations as to the impending end of progress, there is still plenty of room for continued technological advancement.

[1] Image Quality
[2] Bandwidth
[3] Frames per Second (speed)
The other posters are correct pointing out the limitations inherent in high speed digital photography because today there are certainly a few that need to be over come before the transition can be made. With the speed of memory technology we are able to store a limited amount of image data on camera and allow for this to be transfered after capture has taken place. Already we see the beginings of high speed digitals that can be run indefinately with a loss in image quality. When you take out color completely and drop frame resolution than there is alot you can make a digital camera do. The reason that you have a loss in image quality as the speed increases is because the CCD / CMOS / CIF [Common Interchange Format] can't read out the image data fast enough between frames. Current implementations make one chip act as two whereby only one half of the imager captures at a time while the other half is busy transferring its data.
Readers should keep in mind that CMOS is used primarly in video because you can change the analog image data over to a digital value much quicker since there are more A/D converters and they are located closer to each pixel. If you are having trouble with the difference between the two How Stuff Works has a decent explaination. If you are looking for a vendor or want to read some data sheets to get a better idea of the differences between High Speed and High Resolution than I suggest visiting Redlake , one of the many vendors that have products on the market. If you want a better explaination of the target Image Quality that digital is trying to achieve than head over to this guy's site. I guess I will make this my paragraph of website plugs. I couldn't resist linking to an article written by a Professor of the program that I graduated from. It is about capturing a picture of a bullet hitting an object using a conventional megapixel imager.
I am glad that/. finially decided to run an article on this topic:) although it is plain to see that some of you are confused about what this technology is used for. Also I found it quite humorus that the one guy quoted image size of what he assumed the image sensor as 1024x768 which is the most commonly used screen resolution but probably has never been a image sensor size. Here is a good reminder from micron concerning the differences in resolutions. Most image sensors that are developed are of the same size in both dimensions. Not all but most.
Bandwidth isn't a problem. Another misconception that I hope to alievate. With fiber you are not limited by the amount of data that you can transfer through the cable, but by how you store the data once it is transferred. Now of course changing the data from light into electrical would cause a slow down. The reverse is also true. What someone should find out is the limitations of these converters. The only way we would see an advantage of using fiber was if we could finish developing new methods to store the data. I have read scientific columns on 3D optical storage techniques that might be applicable in the future. I think I got a bit off the track let me try and get back on.
The reason Bandwidth isn't a problem is because we don't have the capability to produce digital images at the same rate as with film technology. While it would be nice to have a 1024 x 1024 sensor running at 12K - 40K fps, it is not something that we can do currently.
So the question is what do you want to do with the high speed camera? How much important is Image Quality? How much do you want to spend on capturing the image data? See when it comes down to it, it all depends on the situation.
I am not quite sure why we are talking about high speed digital cameras in the first place. Maybe the person who wrote the article didn't research the equipment that this guy was using. I tried to gather places on the Net whom have added the wonderful news to their site already, but it seems the only one I can find at the moment is the link given and this one Radio And Internet Newsletter.
I think its time I move to India to find work!
I sure as heck can't find work in the dang country.
McDonalds is becoming a more tempting employer day by day.
"bag-o-"lets sell some merchandise".
Is this different than any other movie whose marketing people think that there is some extra bucks to make by selling molded plastic to children. I don't think its a bad thing and there are certainly better things you could criticize about our society than their decision to try make money through entertainment. How about going to see it to form your own decision?
I'm not, but its because I'm not a child raping, jobless, wretched, filthy, odiferous, malcontent Linux programmer.
I am none of these and I AM going to see the movie
If you are reading this, you most likely have no social skills.
It sure sounds like you have a big chip on your shoulder. Why do you even bother using slashdot if all you have to say is crap. How about adding something positive to the community, instead of berating it.
(expire? how the heck can they make a gift certificate expire? and how does it hurt them if it doesnt?).
Now that is a good example of sh*** marketing practice / scheme. That sounds alot worse to me than selling toys to kids. Think of the jobs of the people who design toys! Kinda like the movie BIG. I would rather the people against our personal liberties lose their job, than the people who make toys.
I went to see it the second day at Hoyts in the Carousel Mall, Syracuse. They were playing the movie in two of their theatres all day long. No lines, theatre was half full.
I just bought my ticket down here at the mall of Georgia and there was no line for tickets. Now of course it was 11:30 AM in the early afternoon, but I sure hope that more people go and see this movie than spiderman!!! It would be nice to set the record, not that spiderman was a bad movie, but I already hold Attack of Clones to a higher regard. Maybe it is fated that we will have to wait until the third one comes out to try and set the record.
If I did go see it tomorrow, I wouldn't be one of the many calling in sick to go and see the movie, although I know several people who are doing just that.
Here is the direct link to it. Lego.com
Your right it is big, but I am sure it is worth it!
Ya but can he leap from tall building to tall building and stop bullets with the force of will?
WhenI signed up for Yahoo their ad said free email for life.Yahoo! Mail Now it says free web based email with no mention of the length of time. This sounded good to me back then because at the time the Yahoo site offered a more unique web based experience anda wider range of services than its competitors. It still delivers to this day Yahoo! Yellow Pages, Yahoo! TV - Listings.I think I will continue to use the free services and stop using my Yahoo email now that I have a hosted website of my very own. I do have my Yahoo email filtered through Spamcop.net and might consider using this on my own domain now that Iwill no longer be using mail forwarding. Another way to combat this in my case is to create spam accounts that I do not check and periodically delete from my domain. Giving only my real address out to friends and aquaintences.
I fear thatif I switch to theYahoo Pay servicesit will continue to receive spam by the bucketloads. They supposedly have filters already in place to blockemail that they have verified as spam, but I think their spam department consists of one really overworked NetAdmin. They never seem to catch everything that ends up in my Spamcop account.
If you take a look at theYahoo stock price you will see why they are trying to increase their profit margin. Here is thearticle on Cnet about them charging forEmail services. This sudden decision to start charging for services that were once free is not a suprise after the Tech boom has ended. Yahoo is looking for ways to add value to their company and the only way they know how to do this is increase traffic and start adding pay services. Geocities will also start charging users for two new versions, GeoCities Plus and GeoCities Advantage.
