Average is increasing but variance is also increasing, which leads to temporary colder moments. The name climate change was probably invented because of morons who dont know basic statistics.
There's nothing inherently good or evil about order or chaos. They're two different axis. For example: you can have evil order, benign order, evil chaos, and benign chaos. Chaos is merely an agent of change. That's it! And depending on the state of society, it may be welcomed, or might not be.
If I don't have a job, I will starve. On the other hand, most employers can easily replace most workers. I hardly see anything voluntary about this relationship. It is as voluntary as obeying a man who is pointing a gun at you.
That's how America worked since the Mason-Dixon line. But recently a few big tech companies and the mainstream media have decided that one of the dogmas didn't deserve to be discussed anymore
Sure thing, let us pretend mccarthy never happened.
I suspect that during the 50s-90s people wanted shallow friendships to stave off boredom. Today we have technologies that do it better than these friendships.
A big part of facebook usage is following people's lives and friendship graphs. On slashdot people barely post about their lives and I have rarely seen people using friend/foe. While I do agree that commenting on slashdot is a social online activity, I think it is different from the activities I mentioned before.
Note: I also have a facebook account which I use too much.
It is sad that older messenger programs were much more efficient and clean than newer ones. When power (both state and corporate) catches up with technology, it cuts its wings
If being homeless was a choice, most of them wouldn't choose it. Sometimes, your sole profession no longer has jobs, or you had to spend all your money to take care of a disease, or your far workplace is too far from affordable housing (ex: amazon employees sleeping in tents).
But I guess we all need to lie to ourselves that homeless people choose to be that way, helps us imagine it can't happen to us.
At least from my experience, in most fields in CS, researchers are not that different from software engineers. A better term would be 'article writer', since that is their main concern. They don't care whether these articles enrich human knowledge, let alone freely accessible. Some of them will probably fudge the data a bit to make the article look better. For them it is just a job, just like for the rest of us, in a culture where economic gain is the only thing that matters.
Here in Israel I can tell you that the youth is becoming even more bigoted and racist. We hear things like "all leftists should be exiled" frequently enoguh for it to be a concern.
But hey, I hope the civilized west will fare better.
As someone who does both competitive gaming and performance (standup comedy), I dont understand, why do you think that learning how to play music is any more "real" than learning how to play a video game?
I think that the smart thing for Israel to do was to treat it's christian/muslim arab citizens as equals from the start, that would eventually make them hate the palestinians. Did you know that in the beginning of Israel there was a fear that arab jews (a.k.a. mizrahis) would join the other arabs against Israel? This was prevented by making them feel a part of the Israeli state and using propaganda to make everyone hate the Palestinians.
The best bets for Israel in general are imho two: 1) Keep holding to the occupation and hope that the world will become more right wings and allow us to be more of a jerks. 2) Become a theocracy and somehow merge with the muslims into two theocracies with western culture as a common enemy.
Note that these are the best options for Israel, not the best options for it's citizens. Frankly, unless you are religious, I think your best option in Israel, whether muslim or jewish, is to leave.
Do you really think it is sensible for two people born somewhere to just leave everything away in the name of justice? When has that ever happened without a fight? (This is true for palestinians as well as for us since both sides stole lands at some point)
I'll admit that I failed to find a way to know what is "good" and what is "trash". In my eyes, what matters is how much I feel that a book influenced my emotions or interested me. That makes "Fountainhead" (I'm not libertarian but I think it is really good propoganda) and "Moby Dick" into "good" books in my eyes and some of Kafka's works into "trash". I have failed to find any better criteria so far.
Also, do you think that being obssessed with "good" books is better? I would assume that obssession, by definition, is harmful.
Why has the world forgotten it?

I think I saw the number of comments in the bitcoin article going down from 50 to 40. Wtf?

Life aren't DND.

Why are companies allowed to prevent their employees from going to the court? Corporate law trumps state law?
I just want to remind you that all attempts to create a libertarian state fared much worse than Venezuela.
Oops, forgot the sarcasm tag

I never heard anyone telling people to question dogma, only to switch from one dogma to the other.
Were they that different from the cia during mccarthy?

That's why I know a lot of people without cellphones.
Sounds fun, wish mobile was more expensive where I live.
It won't hurt him much, and it's a small step in the opposite direction of the general trend of all money being concentrated in the hand of the few.
Trillian still supports facebook messenger?

There's a generation of people born in Israel, it is their country now, deal with it.
