    I'll go steal a car today. When I hear that the car has a defect that the dealer will fix for free I'll see how they'll react when I ask them to fix it for me.

    The government should require from Microsoft that it doesn't serve thieves with a silver platter.

    I think they refer to computer systems ownership, not actual software. I believe you don't own the software on your GPLed system either, you licensed it.

    cause I've had plenty of problems attempting to install the latest kernel on my slackware box. Has anyone been able to use the kernel from knoppix to install on other systems? Is there a how-to?

    cause it sure would help speed linux adoption. The way I see it the more people are on linux the more companies will release drivers so we can actually use all the latest stuff (and some old stuff).

    I know the feeling! :) I'm on slackware but occasionally switch to Win98 to play a game that Wine can't play. My girlfriend was sick and tired of Windows taking so long to boot one day and asked me to install Linux on her machine too! :) She had a valid XP licence which came with her computer!

    Piracy doesn't happen in schools and business so much as it does at home. I for one would prefer if MS or the governments would actually do something to circumvent piracy. MS did a statemement not so long ago saying that half the copies of their software was pirated. Imagine if a tenth of these people decided to move to linux because they didn't want to pay for a Windows licence?

    Only in America and Australia will you see such a thing. I remember seeing the videos of police telling teenage school girls to get down at gun point (here). The principal suspected drugs in the school but none were found. The police then gave a statement by which the dogs had smelled drugs in the school bags but the drugs had not been found.

    What next? Will your house be raided on suspection of IP infrigement? Could SCO ask the FBI to raid your house if you are using Linux?

    it is the PCM volume being set to maximum by default. This causes some clipping to happen and the sound is really scratchy. I wished that by default volume would be set to 50%.

    I'm wondering why the directory structure is the way it is. Why isn't aren't the name of the folders more descriptive than bin, etc, opt or var?

    To most people like coming from a DOS/Windows world this all seemed quite hard to grasp at first. Why can't this be changed? Is there a reason I don't know about?

    but in my book usability won't make Linux inherently less secure.

    I think the Windows admins mistake usability with features or something else like insecure macros. I think the design approach of linux is much more protected and secure than what we saw in Windows to date. This has nothing to do with usability at all. It just had to do with the convenience of MS to not have to deal with security issues.

    it seems no one wants to talk about it but I think it is essential we deal with this issue. Shouldn't we have the right to decide wether or not we should live? If anything I should have a say in wether or not I want to live at all shouldn't I?

    you don't get it. Microsoft makes sure that viruses work between Windows versions, not essential business programs.

    where Chinese kids would use a lighter and burn/heat a small piece of plastic to smell it. The kids were trained to determine wether the plastic was easily recyclable or not and would do this all day for a few dollars.

    Has anyone else see this? I'm thinking we need to use less plastic as well. Perhaps use more aluminum as it is easily recyclable and kids aren't asked to smell fumes to decide which pile the components go in.

    It is totally understandable that a linux fan would want more mass acceptance of their OS of choice.

    If like me you've ever been frustrated by not having drivers (or documentation to make them) for one of your gadgets you've probably hoped for more industry support. Well that won't happen until more aunt Tilly's start using our favorite OS. For that we need better usability and I'm sure in time the OSS comminity will make their products as easy and pleasant to use as they are powerful.
