    hehe. So true.

I was at CompUSA the other day and they tried to sell me a warranty on a harddrive that already had a warranty.

Best Buy and all of the others pull this crap also.

  2. Blatant PR Crap on Provigil Extends Your Day? · · Score: 1

This is such obvious PR crap from some firm, most likely cut-and-pasted from a press-release made to look like a news article. Medical companies put out press releases like this all of the time and shoot them to news organizations hoping that they will be published as 'news'.

Don't believe the hype until the drug actually hits the market.

Maybe so, but if you speak to Jack Valenti, he would tell you that the VHS is taking millions if not billions of dollars out of the pockets of Hollywood each year.

It might be that there is a way for multimedia companies could make a whole lot of money out of this, but it seems that no matter how much they make they do make they always see the glass as half full.

  7. right on with this article on Open Source as Programming Exp. for College Students? · · Score: 1

We were hiring a few programmers a few months ago and we got a whole lot of applicants fresh out of college. My boss wouldn't even look at them, as their resumes did not contain any practical programming experience.

If any of those guys had contributed to at least one free software project they would have had a job. Contributing to a project is a great way of getting your hands in a large project, gaining the experience of working with a team, and it produces code that an employer can look at.

If I was graduating from college right now and was having trouble getting a job I would definitly contribute to at least one free software project. Not only is it a great resume builder but it keeps you from getting rusty.

Yea, I agree with this. We need to cooncentrate on what Linux does poorly than on what it does well, though. Windows is really catching up in stability, and they already have ease-of-use in the bag.

I am hoping for the day that I can configure my Linux desktop through a consistant user interface, encrypt files by right clicking on them and selecting 'encrypt' and have easy network transparency.

  11. Bad Idea on Laws to Punish Insecure Software Vendors? · · Score: 1

That is all that we need - more laws to tell us how we can write software.

The whole idea of a market economy is to let the market decide what to do with poorly constructed products - and this is being handled by the market already. There is a very good reason why Microsoft does not have a strong handle on server products and why the company I work for prefers a much more expensive Unix solution.

Really, of anyone is going to trust their company infrastructure to a poorly architected product that is a decision that they make and that person will pay accordingly.

  13. Re:Copyrights are good on World Copyright Treaty Coming soon · · Score: 1

Copyright protections are NOT a bad thing in moderation - even the EFF agrees with giving a short period of time where companies or individuals can hold copyrights (14 years). Copyright has been extended so much that it might be a century before a product goes into public domain. Companies or individuals have monopilies over ideas for so long that it really kills any potential competition.

I have disagreed with some of what Mosfet has said in the past, but I fell he is right on target with this critisism.

Yea, making a long, complicated path name is ridiculous and adds more complication - but the fact is that something should be done to clean up the mess that is the Linux file system.

Even 600 binary applications in one directory is stupid and overcomplicated, and setting up a system where in order to manage these binaries requires a package manager is a broken way of thinking.

I am sure that, with all of the minds connected to Free software we could come up something that is better and more manageable.

Right now you can download Debian installs that support different filesystems - they just aren't the official installer. Just make it an alternate download option. Why not? The code is there, it has been tested, and making installtion easier for users that like graphical installs is just a good thing to do.
