TV commercials during the super bowl don't annoy most people, in fact most people look forward to them. AOL cd's in the mail do annoy people and are yet another form of spam and a huge environmental waste.
I really wish the share holders would ratify a proposition against this. Any shareholder can submit a proposition to be voted on, someonee should do it. Think of the money saved not making the discs and bundling them with everything. I read somewhere that the largest cost of some magazines production is polybagging the mag _just_ so an AOL cd can be included, and AOL picks up the cost of course.
I think that when a large number of people are willing to spend their time physically DoS attacking someone then maybe that person deserves it. I don't think that if an individual just had a grudge against the spam king that person would have been able to really do much damage, but obviously enough people felt the same way.
I see it kind of like picketing, one person doesn't really do that much harm, but if enough people are pissed off....
Small problem there. Everyone is doing this. Which results in the really really good people, who would normally probably end up at research labs, getting their advanced degrees, and all the just real good and below people in the same situation.
I got into school after complete rejections last year, though I was aiming much too high in my school selections.
I really don't think Open Source removes that many jobs. I mean the number of people that develop the open source used are very few compared to those that would use the software. The users of such OS software ( g++ primarily ) are the main developers out there.
Even if all the compilers, debuggers, etc.. were done OS, you still are hitting such a small percentage of developers that it's wouldn't be that big a hit.
To my knowledge, not that that means anything, the only real OS applications targetted at joe-six-pack are those that compete directly with Microsoft. These being linux and Office replacements. And I can assure you that MS is not hiring fewer people because of this, if anything they are highering more to make their products more robust and at least attempting stability.
I think the biggest issue is simply keeping up to date. I work at an academic lab that does DoD contracts. 95% of my co-workers could be my parents. The problem we're having is not of age but of abilities. The current people there are all stuck in their particular languages. We have an Ada person, and the rest are old school C people. The newest ( and relatively younger ) people that have come in, including me, are pushing to start using c++ and OOP methodologies. Our problems are two fold, updating the C people, and highering new people that already have a handle on c++ and OOP.
It's not so much about age but about what the person can do when hiring. I've interviewed a couple people this week already across a range of ages, and luckily of both sexs. We haven't gone with anyone yet because they aren't versed well enough in what we want even if it is the baby boomer of languages.
So wether you are young or old, don't pigeon hole yourself into a single technology or language. Investigate the new ones that look promising.
( Note: I only used the c++ issue as a particular point, there is obviously much more that we care about than knowledge of a certain language, so don't flame me for being short sighted:P )
You make a good point, though it makes me think immediatly to the idea that SETI only searches a very specific and small fequency range because it's what we would/do use.
Granted there's more logic in expecting other life to evolve from water as we did, than other species using the same radio freq we do.
You know this just sounds like a good reason to go back and work for MS. I mean damn the bennies are nice and aparantly the revenue stream isn't going to end.
One feature I like about netscape that IE doesn't have is that you can make netscape go check all your bookmarked sites and tell you which have been updated since you last looked at them. I would love it if IE did this or if i could find an external app/plugin that did this too, or even polled the sites every 30 min and told me when a site had an update.
And of course, we all know tha Microsoft release dates never slip...
Can anyone name a company as old as MS that hasn't ever slipped on a release date? A company that has released as many products as MS that hasn't ever slipped on a release date?
Netscape just sucks. about 6 years ago I was using netscape, I liked it, didn't like IE at all. Then IE came out with a new version that I thought was pretty neat, still used Netscape though, then netscape came out with there next version and it just plain sucked. I switched to IE and have seen no reason to switch back since.
What exactly is the reason behind trying to compress already compressed audio and video files again? The size reduction, if you happen to get one, is negligable and it tends to make the file slightly bigger from what I've seen. I've never really understood this.
I got one of the 17" LCD's $300 after rebate. Problem with this is there are no useful specs anywhere for the thing. The best buy people opened one of the boxes to see if anything useful was in it, nope. Website had no real details, best buy people were clueless. It's been a good monitor though for $300.
Perhaps, but SGI is doing so badly there's nothing to gain from sueing them, other than maybe consuming the whole company. :P
The patent could certainly be invalidated by the courts on either point, but that'd take a fight in court that won't be cheap.
I'm sure AOL will happily buy Tivo and sue MS for any sort of award a la the Netscape vs. IE award.
Perl has a fairly steep learning curve to really use the language. If it's good enough, they will use it.

They even use puffs of compressed air to separate sticky pages!
Whoah! I guess some pr0n really have decent articles.
Lies, Damn Lies, and Marketing
It's sad such a fine institution of news delivery was compromised as such

"Code Monkeys" are dime a dozen
Yeah but you still can't get enough of them to generate shakespear, let alone a page full of s's.

If you're gonna take a shot, make it a good one.

Well there goes any hopes of fast DLs on the future eps. Good thing I got Ep5 yesterday :P
Hehe, given both of those companies bank accounts one'll probably just buy SBC and ruin the other.

Are you actually suggesting he take apart his laptop case to look at the mobo? Besides invalidating a couple warranties I dunno if that's a good idea.
My Dell laptop has no way to look at the mobo unless you actually take the case apart.
Yeah, freedom, freeeeedoooommm!
I am concerned that when all of this is said and done, only users of a Microsoft OS will not receive spam. ;-)
:)
Doesn't that give us like 95% coverage? Sounds good to me
