If you have a shitty connection, just turn off images - you'll be amazed how much time you stop wasting when you don't have eye-candy to lead you to rubbish sites. Looking at you, Buzzfeed.
If you're talking about human workers being unnecessary then 50 years does not seem like a long way away.
I imagine that even the first wave of redundancies will cause chaos - maybe the one that causes a one point increase in unemployment.
I see very regular post hijacking from noobs - like asking people to debug code that isn't even relevant to the discussion, just because the forum members are talking about the language or application. That is annoying but they usually get ignored.
Just got to say, what the hell is going on with consumer electronics?
Too many different connectors, no standards, expensive chargers.
Who can blame the consumer for spending £5 on a charger from the market, rather than £25 for the official one? A wire is a wire right? They probably have a garage full of old chargers that don't fit anything anymore as well!
In my experience in the UK, the difference between minimum wage and entry level graduate position is not that great. Not saying that minimum wage is too high, just that the value of a degree seems to have become somewhat devalued and I don't see salaries having moved much in ten years.
Assumed this story was about the dubious photos that will haunt people until they die (for millenials that is).
The actual story sounds more like a rant against sharing though... digital protectionism I guess.
How many would you evacuate? 1 million tops? I'm willing to bet that a million would survive on Earth anyway, and even a wrecked planet will be more hospitable than the alternatives.
Maybe we could send all the telephone hygienists first though.
The U.S. seems like an insane place to work.
80 hour weeks and hardly any paid leave seems common.
Maybe I just work in a different culture though - wages are lower and people are out the door at 5:00.
The big question is what happens between a significant number of people losing their jobs and UBI arriving? And how long is that period?
At the moment you have a pool of people who are mainly looking for work - the overall number stays roughly the same but there is probably a lot of turnover as people move in and out of that pool.
At some point this pool is going to start to actually grow - people will move in and won't be able to move out.
This is already happening to an extent in the UK but the numbers can be masked by the number of people sharing a dwindling number of shitty jobs eg they are working part-time or zero-hour contracts. When they go from 'surviving' to 'homeless' the shit will hit the fan.
With increased automation and clever third world countries on hand, the last thing I would encourage my daughter into is IT.
Maybe into a cushy management job that won't get sent abroad or given to a robot?
Don't want to sound like an old fart, but I'm going to... the first web pages looked fairly similar to a printed page because the printed page is pretty much the ideal way to read.
Jesus, some of us have grandparents who died in the war over Serif/Sans-Serif fonts.
I got this sweet job, the only downside is that I have to use my friend's DNA to pass the constant testing. And I have to make sure not to leave any skin or hair samples at work.
Having just had a clear out of my fridge, I'm now kicking myself at the number of cures for any number of maladies I may have inadvertently binned.

Hoping for some neon desktops, really. All these drab pastels and off-white colours look kind of tedious after a while, like a show-home.

UK resident here. I wouldn't take the unemployment figures as gospel. More useful to look at the underemployed.
How about delivery via the other senses? Eg Binaural Beats? Get on YouTube, there's plenty of Gamma frequencies to experiment with.
Surely being falsely accused of watching 'The Cobbler' is the bigger crime? The guy may have lost his job and family over crap like that.
The US is legalising weed and all the bloody UK gets is free surveillance. Welcome to the UKSSR.

I had a business selling laundry robots but it folded :(

If I was the enemy, I wouldn't bother sinking these ships, just let them keep firing. A week of fighting and your enemy is bankrupt. Then sink them.

I'm imagining in the reboot of Back to the Future 2, that Doc will just take a crap in the Delorean to power it. Banana skins optional.
We must start work on a space wall, to keep out the aliens.
Did they have any coders recently imported from console gaming backgrounds? They have a very relaxed view on fixing bugs after go-live!
I thought the headline referred to the insanely high prices that would relieve everyone of cash!

But are populations trending downwards because two parents need to work to afford a house now and kids come later in life or not at all?
