You may not find a Wii at Best Buy or Circuit City. But K-Mart and Sam's Club have been getting about 10 or so in once a week and selling out that day. I know three people who went out this week and picked up their Wii systems for X-mas gifts.
I would like to start by stating I am using Fedora 6, right now on a dual boot system with XP. I find that 90% of what I do can be done under linux. As many poster's here have stated, linux is not for everyone. I would first start with having them try it as a dual both system, so they can test the water so to speak.
Here is a list of positive points about linux:
1. a free windowing operating system, with lot's of very well made applications. 2. No having to look for driver disk like under windows, for most main stream hardware 3. Desktop can be configured to work just like Microsoft windows, with same mouse interactions. 4. Very good web browsers and email clinet's 5. Office suite's that are comparible to Microsoft office but they are free.
My hardware hacking begain when a friend ask me to solder some memory on to his motherboard for him. I did this by Piggy backing 32K dynamic ram chips on the old TRS-80 model 3 motherboard to get 64K without buying the upgrade module. Did the same for my TRS-80 color computer.
I built a real time BW video digitizer for my TRS-80 color computer, a D/A convertor board with two 8 bit D/A converters to run my laser light show system.
I been trying to move to linux as my OS of choice, but find lots of pit falls if your not a linux nerd trying to setup software and hardware. Not to say that it has improved a lot over the years.
I been playing with Fedora 5 and about 90%+ of that I do under windows I can do under linux.
Somethings I would like to see is a better software installation options and setup the software. This Common interface is a good idea, instead of having the installation program know how to setup both Gnome and KDE. A common x-windows software regestry, in which it would be KDE or Gnomes job to check this regestry for new installations.
Also prompts to select where to locate the software on the menu or create a subfolder on the menu.
Another is having a more common area to install the software, like going through a maze to find program files and folders under linux.

DRI (Direct Rendering Infrastructure) this open source video driver system allows direct access to the video card which in turn improves OpenGL preformance.
GLX an improved x-windows openGL interface for applications
I think a lot of people still would like to see Linux mature into a Windows alternative.
I know you say that you only want open source programs, but this really limits any distro from being a true windows alternative. Without DVD, MP3 and a DRM system, and 3D graphic hardware support.
What are you doing to make Fedora a more friendly for people wanting to switch from windows?
From useing Fedora core 5, while being a little bit more advanced computer user. I was able without too much trouble find outside support for installing the MP3 and other must have software. but still had problems with the 3D hardware support.
For a Desktop to work must have the following: Support for popular files formats 3D graphics hardware support for games Ease of use finding files and transfering files from a windows system. Right now the file setup blows alway most windows users!
Hum... Left out George Bush (Elder), signed the bill into law.
But the truth is Al Gore did not come up with this bill on his own, he was talked into it by Leonard Kleinrock, Ph.D and others. And from their papers agreed this needed to be funded.
Sometimes we have to make a choice when you are attacked by a group of terrorists. Unlike terrorists groups that want money or people released these people want to destroy our way of life.
We have two options sit and wait for another attack to happen or we can be proactive. I have no problem with a government computer scanning data from different sources, and flagging communications that could be terrorist planning another attack. Probably 99% data collected is never seen by a human being, just processed by the computer.
This leak of how the Government is tracking Terrorist is a bigger problem then the president calling for NSA to collect this data. Look at what happened when the Clinton administration was tracking Bin Laden, it leaked they could track him by his cell phone usage. He stopped using a cell phone and we lost a good way to track him and maybe could have stopped 9/11. Now they know we are looking at all communications, and will modify how they send information to different cells.
There is always a chance of this information being used for political reasons, similar to what happened in the Clinton administration. If Bush used it against political opponents then that would be a problem, and he would be held accountable

Disney's has the rights to all of Hayao Miyazaki film's current in theater's if you can find one is "Howls Moving Castle".
The movie started in only 36 theater's but in the first week against along list of movies was ranked 13 and grossed as much as some main stream movies showing in 1000's of theaters.
The second week was boosted to a whooping 202 theater screens, as compared to say Madagascar which was in about 3,000 theater and pull in almost the same amount of cash as Howl's moving castle!
It has to be that the these media company's don't want to see oversea's works get more attention then their own?
Example Disney's Madagascar vs. Howls moving Castle. If disney had put Howls moving Castle in as many theaters as there other feature, they would have pulled in more then Madagascar!.
If get a chance and can find a theater near you, Howls moving castle is a good movie for the family. And you don't have to be an anime fan to enjoy's it.
Now, I disagree about the part about him changing the world for the better. Rest of the world really doesnt care when he was alive, far less now that he is dead. The only time that I ever heard of him was his name associated with the infamous "Starwars" and Reagan-omics. Both really bad ideas (ofcourse can be disputed).
If Reagan-omics where a bad idea why do we still use it today? You could say that the boom in the 90's was do to Reagan-omics.
But maybe if you know the other name for Reagan-omics that is free market economics.
Reagan-omics and trickle down economics are just buzzwords for standard economics.
"StarWars" help fund research for faster computers and other new technologies that are in use today, so I feel we got some good use from the money spent on it.
And Reagan was one of the most popular presidents in our time, being re-elected his second term by 49 of the states
Liberals want to rewrite history of his time as president and all the good he did because he proved them wrong. He was not an member of any ivy league college, just a down to earth guy with good ideas that reshaped the country and the world.
Build a FM transmitter and attach it to my computer, then add a webserver that lets people make muisic request via the web and put into a MP3 music que. Use text to voice module to create a virtual DJ and tells what title and artist are about to play.

My big grip with Disney is there taking so long in releasing there versions to the US market. I waited almost 5 years for Kiki's delivery service from the time it was slated to come out.
But if you want to talk about a terrible hack job on one of Miyazaki's movies, see if you can find a copy of the "Warriors of the Wind" a really bad translation of "Nausicaa vally of the Wind". This translation is so bad, Miyazaki ask's that people try to forget it.

Scam #1: Start a business in a hot area, get a few componies interested in your idea's. Get investers interested in your company, but telling them how companies are dying to buy your new product. Then sale the company before people realies there is no product and it starts fold.
Scam #2: Tell investers you have a new product idea for a hot market, get them to invest lot's of money. Then pay yourself an outragous salary, until you have used up all the investment. Then say you were a victem of a tough market.
I think you are a bit uneducated, there are only two senators per state. Arkansas is no exception!!
