You don't have to limit yourself to game companies or software companies, it works for any company:
Sim MBA - some golfing buddies get you a cushy C*O position at a Reasonably Successful Company... you make various short-sighted decisions, ridiculous cuts, etc. to drive up the stock price, take a huge bonus and exit with a golden handshake, then move on to rape another company...
If the XBox gets down to around $100 each, Bill Gates could buy every single man, woman, and child in the US one, and he'd still be worth about $25 billion (assuming he'd pay retail).
XBox would instantly have total market penetration, and then some.
This ridiculous crap makes me happy that I haven't invested in a DVD burner yet. Every time I start to think, "Hey, maybe things have settled down finally..." something like this comes up and FUDs me.
What, exactly, is a "favourable" response to advetising? Not going postal? Not stabbing yourself in the eyes? Not smashing your monitor?
Seriously, am I expected to believe that anyone likes Internet advertising?
I tried to read an article on GameSpot yesterday (yeah, first mistake there...) and they had some sort of streaming video ads embedded in the pages. But, of course, the streaming video ads had to play a streaming video ad indicating that the streaming video ad would start soon. I wasn't that interested in the information so I closed the tab.
Last fall I quit a job at a huge corporate monolith to work for a really small company; I took a pay cut to do it.
The small company is also within walking distance of my house, which is a great perk.
I went from being a generic "Technical Writer 4" to being "Documentation Overlord". It's more work, but it's also more freedom, and I like knowing (and recognizing) everyone in the company.
I'm not a fan of crazy monopolies abusing their position of power.
But I really, really like C# and the.NET class libraries. And I'm developing a soft spot for VisualStudio.NET 2003.
If either of these projects gets to the point where I can do useful things with C# on Mac OS X, Linux, and Solaris, I'll be happy.
Actually, I managed to build dotGNU on OS X this week, and can run the XML app I was working on; I haven't managed to get Mono built, which is a shame because it implements more of the classes I want to use... with any luck, I'll be able to track down a binary package for OS X.
(Note: I work in a Java shop. Also, I personally think Java is a serious pain in the ass, mostly because of runtime issues, not language issues. But hey, I'm mostly a docs guy.)
Of course, I'll have to check out DOOM III... it looks like it might be the first playable survival horror game, ever. It'll be nice to see if the id folks can make a good game (you know, with a plot and stuff) with their excellent engine...;-)
Maybe they can finally support PNG images properly... they've only been an Internet standard for seven years.
Throw in built-in SVG support, too, so we can actually start using them (Internet standard for two years now). Maybe then Mozilla/Firebird, etc. will sort our their library licensing issues and support SVG out of the box, too.
In CRPGs, I usually play as "Morpheus", since that was my BBS handle back in the early 90's (yeah, before the Matrix). I think I originally picked this because of The Sandman comic from the late 80's/early 90's.
In pen and paper RPGs, I used to play as "Arcaidia", "Algernon", "Moebius"... Whatever comes to mind.
Online I'm either chrish (my user ID at work when I started using IRC) or Taffer (a derogotory name from Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age).
I agree, in my opinion (YMMV) that's a pretty ugly and drab case... almost like something from 1984. My PC has a very nice (and functional) Lian-Li aluminum case that looks much better.
Hmm, $4 US/hour... guess I can't make a living playing video games just yet. Stupid mortgage.
Gee that sounds like fabulous fun, so totally worth paying $15 US per month to fish and camp monster spawns.
These games have certainly come a long way from, say, Rogue, haven't they? That innovation of paying $15/month is brilliant.
No wonder I don't play MMORPGs. Someone call me when there's actually a point to playing them...

Is this faster than a GeForce 4 90210?
Here, here!
I let my son (3 years old) play The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker with me, I won't let him play Unreal Tournament 2004 with me.
And you can bet that when he does start playing games like that, he'll have a firm grasp of "reality" vs. "fantasy", that death is permanent, etc.
One bit for parity?

YMMV.

Is this the patch that finally makes Java fun?

Hey, if Nintendo or anyone else wants to fund me and a small team for 2-3 years, I'd be more than happy to produce an exclusive GameCube title.
There's only one I'm exited about: Thief III.

Oh, and my Neverwinter Nights modules.
Isn't that how they teach you to manage at MBA school? Rape the corporation, get the golden handshake, move on to the next victim...
XP runs quite well on my old laptop (P2 333MHz, 192MB of RAM). It's actually quite a bit faster than Linux was on that hardware...

I want a port of Harry The Handsome Executive!
I really like the Everchanging Book of Names...
Although that IGS one can be amusing... "King Tostoy Vasif the Elegant Winner and his Helpful Band of Blackhearts".
"Oh no, the Blackhearts are helping repress the peasants!"
Buy me Bone Storm or go to hell!
Nope; haven't played any of the team-based games... UT and Jedi Knight II sometimes, or Neverwinter Nights.
I like logging on to random low-ping UT servers and seeing how bad I get whupped by the guys who spend 4+ hours/day "training" on it.

I only bought the 3e books for Neverwinter Nights module design, I'm not "upgrading".
Unless someone wants to give me a 1:1 trade for my 1e AD&D books... ;-)
You want me to have an ABORTION!
