I'm a senior graduating from college trying to get into grad school or find a job. At my school's job fair their were *two* tech companies that took my resume and they both said "We have a freeze for the rest of the year, but when its over we'll check out your resume."
If their is a tech boom, it would have to relate to the fact they companies spent the last 6 months *not* hiring.
Speaking of which if anyone is looking for a bright, talented musician/programmer e-mail me:)
Eve really did write a beautiful article, and I thank her for writting it. She did, however, try to wipe her hands clean of all responsibilty. Not to say she is responsible, but ArsDigita's death was not due to just the capitalists that sealed its fate, but the capitalists within.
ArsDigita was one of the few net companies actually developing a useful product that people wanted. It should have weathered the dot-com bombs, but it fell into a cycle of greed. Rather than making modest earnings, they wanted to get richer faster. It was easy to ignore the fact they were making tons of money, and doing a good job. They had the potential to make more, and being good young american capitalists they went for the opportunity.
A web developer no matter how talented is not actually worth 7 million dollars. This is not to say they aren't "the best" or any other such nonsense, but rather 7 million dollars is a HUGE amount of money.
Think of ID games. They keep their number smalls, their business controlled and make solid, strong, modest, earnings for the most desired product of its kind. They are extremly successful and will continue to be because they hold similar ideals to ArsDigita.
ArsDigita, however, let it be controlled by big fish who offered to front more money. More money, more profit, everyone's happy? No, because everyone was trying to get rich quickly. Sure you were trying to make a good product, but you were so bedazzeled by the money that ArsDigita's creative control was lost. If you invite sharks into your pool, expect to get bit.
Eve I'm sorry you got screwed. You did your job well, but no matter getting rich quick means someone else is paying for it. Your company tried to raise too much capital, too fast. You got your ass kicked by the best, but we're all alittle wiser for it.
Oh well, I invite you to join my world. A soon to be college graduate looking at a very tight job market because a few dot-commers wanted little red sports cars.

The article doesn't have much detail on the actual transmition of the signal. Well other than the fact that I would hesistate to stick anything in my head these days, I wonder how precise an activity like this is. Signal could be effected by other signals in the area. Like how hearing implants can be effected by cellphones.
Oh well still seems cool.
Maybe a better application of this would be for 3D apps in the future. 3D Mice suck.
The problem most people have when using a laptop for composing are the crappy midi sounds. Well creative has very nice midi sounds (a la what's on the audigy these days). Yes you can plug it into a midi instrument, but that's hard to do when you crammed on the band bus.
As far as doing recordings, just recently the USB Minidisc connects came out. They are very nice, unfortunatly most musicians bought early minidiscs. We have the optical cables, but not the USB cables. We don't want to buy a new minidisc becaues we're still paying off the first one (not to mention that nice stereo sony mic).
Laptops generally have very low sound quality. It sounds like your working with a tin can. Its further killed by the fact there is no way to replace the sound card that is in your labtop already. I hear a lot "We can't afford a new labtop, fix up my old piece of crap" mentality.
Finally, musicians always want to impress other musicians. We want to plug our labtops straight into our friends kick ass stereo system. This has the connectivty right in the front.
Nice move by creative. I make a lot of machines for musicians (being a geek and a musician). Musicians want to get labtops so they can bring it on their tours. People always ask me about how to get a music labtop. With this little box you can have all the connectivity you need (including minidisc which is used to do a lot of cheap recording). With ProTools free CSound and a few others you can have a complete composition kit on the go for an affordable price. Its simply put, exactly what they are looking for.
Apple is moving in the right direction In the 80-90s apple grabbed many artists and musicans with its beautiful multimedia software. Still to this day, many musicians I know will not touch anything that is not an Apple. Put recently, I've seen musicians switching over to windows because of the huge popularity. Still there are enough musicians and artists interested, and a few other niche folk to keep Apple afloat. In this game however, marketshare is important and they need more customers. Where to get them?
Windows has business pretty well covered. Even though it might not be the best option for the business, people know the software. Suits like what's comfortable. Sure apple might get a few of the suits, but not very many, they really just don't care.
What market is left? Well geeks naturally! I've had a chance to use OS X a bit, and I think its a very nice OS. You can definitly see the UNIX incooperated and it still supports tons of old Mac software. Well Linux is really just UNIX anyhow but for an x86. Who cares what the processor is so long as it plays l33t games. Plus as geeks we like sticking it to Intel as well, and frankly I'm ok with that.
I like where Apple is going and if they would let me build my own system, drill a few holes in the side and overclock the processor into toast... I'd already have one.
I have some problems with device.
It simply does too much! Its a cross between one of the expensive LCD remotes, a palm pilot, xbox control, a gameboy advance, and shopping kit all in one.
This device is going to be similar to windows media player. If you want to do anything you'll have to wade through an advertisment. Why is this a problem? Well I've already paid for my media, why do I have to pay to watch it again? Not to mention the fact that many bugs are introduced by quirky internet response and malicious users.
As for the remote control part of it, this is a remote that literatly doesn't want you to change that channel. Imagine channel surfing, but you remote is too busy downloading content on Jennifer Somebody's sweater. I don't care about her sweater, and frankly I don't want you sending information to someone that I am looking at her sweater (added spyware, whoppie!)!
This device is going to be bulky, expensive and with advertising, and if were lucky spyware. Microsoft I hope you fall on your ass on this one.
Basically the degrees leave you with different options, but as with all things if you really want to go another way when you are finished, its possible.
A CS track is setup so that when you are done you can go into a research oriented program.
A CIS track is setup so that when you are done you can go into a MBA program.
A MIS degree is a terminal degree intended on getting you experience with the software that companies use.
MIS gets you a job and gets you making money. CIS does too and you can end up making even more if you get the MBA. CS is cool if you want to have a more geeky job, like programming games.
I only mentioned it because at $250 it was similar to the cost of memory now. I believe that the main use of platter style hard drives is that memory has been too expensive. The technology is being increasingly developed and I would not be suprised at all if we saw solid state devices becoming more popular. Yes its more expensive but when it comes to entertainment equiptment, people will spend ridiculous amounts. Platter hard drives offer noise, and audiophiles won't stand for it. At 190 for 512 megs of ram, they won't have to for long.
Here are some semi relevant links:

This stuff also has REALLY high demand, much higher than microdrives. Moore's Law. "Every 18 months the performance will double and the size will half." A gig of this is already here at $950 from kingston. Its only a brief matter of time before this technology is better and faster than the microdrive.
Now that we know their plan for world domination isn't superman suppost to come out and kick some ass?
Well I'm sure they'll get what's comming to them in court, in the mean time I'm waiting for that $12k check I'm going to get for forwarding this e-mail to 10 people.
Just this week I had recieve two different calls from friends with Win 95 about problems they were having. Mostly relating to the infamous "operating system not found" bug. Not all users out there get the hint that they should upgrade and maintain their operating systems. I think microsoft's move to unsupport win 95 is a good thing. This means that people will be forced to upgrade their boxes and a lot of tech guys jobs will be easier.
Nevermind the bugs introduced in the new version:)

This is a neat toy, but I'd say save your money.
Most people get a gameboy to hush up their kids, to play on car trips/plane trips, or to play at a boring desk job. Where gameboy is well suited for this because of its high portablity and battery life, gamecube is not.
This thing is a $400 investment which can be easily damaged if dropped. It only lasts for 3 hours and it has many cords that could easily get tangled. The controller aspect alone is enough to not warrent the trouble. The only use I see for this is if you want to bring it to work to play during your lunch break (Hey smash brothers is really cool, might be a good way to make friends). That makes it only worth buying more as a small TV than as a portable toy.
If you're board during work and can get away with a small display, go for this. Otherwise, get a gameboy.
Seems like an awful lot of money to spent unless he has planned research? Or is this just one really sweet vacation? Just seems as though south africa could use the hosptials and schools more than the rocket trip.
This technology is ultra cool! It's like an ultra geeky razor scotter. However what's cooler about it is that it has the potential to lead to highly sensative vechicles for sporting/fun. It's like having Harry Potter broomstick kinda control. Imagine jet ski's and other vehicles being this responsive!
Google knows just as well as we do that this is going to lead to the small minority influencing the outcome of search results. It also makes some big companies very happy.
Looks like a big old sell out.
Anyone know of a good secondary search engine?
