    Why CP/M went down is beyond me. Why PCs with MSDOS and Windows 1 to 3.1 became a standard is also beyond me.

    It's the lemming effect. Once enough people bought it, enough PHBs thought it was the way to go. besides, moving pictures around is prettier that typing commands.

    I was shocked to see how well it read my hand writing. This was on a Tablet PC running XP.
    The only nuisance was having to turn it off when you didn't need it. Otherwise it kept on thinking I was writing something.

    The bastards are nothing if not thorough - they trademarked the French version as well - "Des plus brilliants exploits". See here.

    Why?
    It translates to: "The most brilliant Exploits"
    and its not in the same part of the song as "with glowing hearts".
    "with glowing hearts" is at the beginning of a verse and "Des plus brilliants exploits" is at the end of a verse.
    Sounds like they copyrighted the French words so that Quebec didn't feel left out.

    We have something like this too called DeepFreeze.
    It prevents permanent changes to the OS and no virtual Machines. We use it in the public library.

    In the US, companies are more interested in (the illusion of) reliability.

    With commercial software, if you want something fixed, they listen to you only if your company is bigger than theirs.

    That's because it a closed driver.
    Only Intel knows what it does.
    Looks like it write the NIC's firmware and cannot reset just the NIC. So it asks for a reboot.
    IOW: the NIC needs the reboot, not Linux.

    Almost all drivers in Windows are closed.

    Depends, do you own the copy or did you license the copy.
    -If you *own the copy* then you are screwed since you are allowed to do as you wish with the copy short of making copies of it. That includes trashing/destroying the disc.
    -If you *license the copy* then you can get a replacement media copy or even copy another Good disc but keep the defective one as proof of license.

    The sad thing is that such laws are only respected in countries like the US and UK.

    Soon countries like China will be able to have much better technologies because they can take the best from all sides and create a super product. Even if the US and UK forbid the importation of such products, companies in the US and UK would be at a disadvantage selling inferior product to other countries.

    Patents and copyrights will prove to be our downfall since they no longer encourage progress but prevent it.

    Being stuck in a windows world I see no benefit in multi core CPUs since XP does NOTHING with the 2nd core. I have a dual core CPU at work and CPU utilization NEVER goes over 50% meaning only one core is doing the work.

    Does VMware workstation or Ubuntu actually make use of the extra cores?
