Here in the real world, using firefox or mozilla or opera means you don't get affected by spyware(actually, I have encountered one piece of spyware which tries to install via XPI, but I knew I didn't want to install any plugins and cancelled the install) or viruses, whereas using IE WILL get you infected.
I think you should leave the ivory tower once in a while. That goes for the lot of Windows/IE appologists who are to fucking stupid to understand the implications of the fact that just plugging a fresh XP or 2k box means being infected, while doing the same with linux doesn't, or using IE means your computer will get undesired software installed, and using firefox/mozilla/opera means you won't.
It's not rocket science, it's just one piece of software that is dangerous and one that is not.
The problem with your argument is that some people refuse to be educated. Hell, the biggest software company in the world is putting tons of money into educating their programmers, and after a couple years, there haven't been any appreciable gains(actually, since hackers have had that much more time to study, there have been extraordinary losses in the security department)!
Why would it be sent with your IP? If the wireless is before the router as he says, the computers logging into it will have to get another IP address from their dhcp server, hence evidence.
Hell, your router would have proof in it's logs too.
Anyway, a simple IP address would NOT be enough to get a person into trouble. This isn't soviet russia, people don't just dissapear. Due process exists exactly so that you don't need to worry about your internet connection committing thought crime on your behalf.:)
If he's putting the wireless before his router, it's not safe anyway. You are aware that most broadband internet mediums have a large broadcast domain covering your entire neighbourhood anyway, right? Letting a few more passersby access that broadcast network isn't going to cause any harm that you're already exposed to.
It's a pity that pseudoscience has taken the place of real science in peoples understanding of medicine, isn't it?
I guess it's like the GMO foods debate. We've been eating them for years with literally no problem, but suddenly these luddites are up in arms because there's a "vibe"(it sure as hell isn't proof, or even a plausable theory!) that the food may not be safe.
Another useful thing is that you can install over a damaged 98 installation to get a running machine with most of your settings and such intact. It's a bit crude, but it's a world easier than dealing with an NT install with a couple toasted files from a chkdsk and having to start from scratch because the installer removes everything and renames the profile on you.:/
Make www.windowsupdate.com and v4.windowsupdate.com trusted sites, then crank up the security settings for the internet zone. No html forms, no downloads, no activex, no vbscript, no java...
It cripples IE so much that you can't even use it by accident. Not so useful if you're out of the habit of typing things into the address bar of file manager windows, but very useful if you have others using your computer who ust don't listen.;)
That's a rather broad generalization, especially given that you give nothing to back any of it up. Rather than thinking of it as technology, think of it as a relatively simple way to tie the virtual stamps to a certain person that happens to be technological. It could be done non-technologically as well, such as through a photo ID card, but why bother? Virtual items in this case can't be counterfeited, they can't be traded transparantly(ie. the government sees "billy the crack dealer" on the invoice at the end of the month and goes "hmmmm..."), and a lot of things you can do with physical objects become less pheasible.
I'm not saying I'm the expert on such a system, but your outright dismissal of it because it's supposedly technological, while ignoring the non-technological aspects of it(most good stores won't allow you to pay for something with a VISA or Mastercard unless you have the physical card there to prevent credit card theft, for instance) is just arrogant.
It seems to me that taxing one hundred thousand corporations would be a lot cheaper than taxing two hundred million citizens, regardless of the end result...
I'm a Vi user, but to be honest, I'd just as soon use the MS-DOS editor if that's what I had.:/
I think the real nerds who would argue something like text editor probably went back to doing just that in their own corner of the internet. Now there's just bored IT folk and college students here.;)
Yup, because there's absolutely no reason, certainly not past incompotence we're still feeling the effects of, to deter a person from voting for the federal conservatives...
Though to be honest, I voted mostly based on factors in my riding -- the conservative candidate, Bill Brown, was a loudmouthed, "we're not the liberals! Vote for us!!" chanting punk(regardless of any corruption, the liberals have done a decent job running the country, and have made some tough decisions to keep the budget balanced. The same cannot be said of the Mulroney Progressive Conservatives which preceeded them). Northwestern Ontario needs strong voices since there are only a few seats to represent us, and the Liberal candidate was the former mayor of Dryden, an experienced voice. The NDP was never in the running, in my view, because they're a bunch of crazy nutjobs who never saw a defecit or social program they didn't like.
The final straw was the fact that the conservative fiscal platform was anything but. They were taking the greatest liberties with their budget in terms of estimating saving, which is irresponsible, especially considering the history of the provincial tories. Also, the huge tax cuts were and are a dangerous, presumptuous thing to be spending money they don't know they have on in their first budget.
So don't give me this "it's OK to embezzle public funds"(calling it embezzlement is stretching the truth -- it was badly spent public money, but not embezzled) one issue wonder crap. Trying to characterize a decade of liberal leadership with one scandal only betrays an ignorance of the issues which actually matter -- the issues which these people deal with on a day to day basis, and the issues you SHOULD be thinking of when you cast your ballot, rather than some spur of the moment anger at the discovery of a scandal which would only be so in Canada(think thousand dollar wallets).

Short answer: They could, but they don't.
Here in the real world, using firefox or mozilla or opera means you don't get affected by spyware(actually, I have encountered one piece of spyware which tries to install via XPI, but I knew I didn't want to install any plugins and cancelled the install) or viruses, whereas using IE WILL get you infected.

It's not rocket science, it's just one piece of software that is dangerous and one that is not.
After my sister came up for the summer and destroyed every computer in my house simply by surfing using IE? No.
Don't mistake popularity for technological superiority.
After all, Windows has a 90% market share.
The problem with your argument is that some people refuse to be educated. Hell, the biggest software company in the world is putting tons of money into educating their programmers, and after a couple years, there haven't been any appreciable gains(actually, since hackers have had that much more time to study, there have been extraordinary losses in the security department)!
Some people weren't in class when the concept of an interpeter was explained, I think. ;)
If I ever find someone using an interpeted language for device drivers, I fully intend to laugh at the top of my lungs for a full hour.
:)
Seriously, I wouldn't use VB or QB for those either, but that hasn't stopped the former from becoming quite popular.
You would DIE if you were using OS/2. :P
Wouldn't a Java interpeter in Java require another Java interpeter, culminating in an endless cycle of programmers who really want to be directors?
If he thought it was any more than four alligator clips, you should see into having it taken away. ;)
Why would it be sent with your IP? If the wireless is before the router as he says, the computers logging into it will have to get another IP address from their dhcp server, hence evidence.

I had forgotten about that. I hope they bury those software pirates(in a much more literal sense) six feet under.

Here's something which you might want to try:

Maybe we should get upper class people to stop deciding what people need to live?

Don't you guys have a republican dominated senate and a republican president?
Are the democrats so completely to blame?
just checking.

Wrong processor.
The last review by anandtech was "EM64T Xeon vs. Athlon 64 under Linux".
I'll spare you the condescending jab at your last remark.
naw. The russians were commies. They never actually owned any of it. ;)
I can think of another:
:)
Fast, good, cheap. Choose any two.
