    Just how your perceptions are shaped by your first-hand experiences, so are mine.

    I've been to far too many family gatherings where fox news talking points fly fast and furious. There are certainly well-reasoned and nuanced opinions about government-run healthcare, but the same "I'm not shelling out tax dollars for illegals and lazy parasites" trope comes up again and again in this crowd.

    If I am the CEO of a mega corporation, then I know the value of good will to generate goodwill and I will put some kind of human at Control Gate C who will put a stopper on the mindless sharks in my legal department who would sully my business' positive reputation by suing dancing toddlers.

    That's exactly the reason why these suits are usually filed by the RIAA. The RIAA takes the heat for playing bad cop and the underlying content producer gets to keep their name away from the lawsuit.

    IANYFA, but you can't sell short from an IRA account, you'll need a margin account. If you want to fund that margin account with your 401k proceeds, it will be a taxable distribution.

    Yet, nobody in the SEC listened until the money that fueled Madoff's ponzi scheme dried up and forced its collapse. It's hard to say a crime is being committed when the "victims" are receiving 12% returns and have yet to see a loss. I give this guy credit for figuring out that there was something rotten, but you can't call the police to report a murder if the victim is still alive. That had to have been a helpless feeling.

    The message to would-be scammers is: don't get caught.

    Or as a corollary, don't lose money. Nobody, including the SEC, cared until he started losing money and couldn't keep paying out those astronomical returns.
