  1. They aren't on Netflix anyway on Disney Is Pulling Star Wars and Marvel Films From Netflix (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 2

Excluding Marvel cartoons, the only Marvel movies on Netflix (streaming) from the past 10 years are Doctor Strange and Captain America Civil War.

The only Star Wars film on Netflix is Rogue One.

  2. Oh, good. Because if there's one thing missing from the world, it's another messaging app.

While you may be able to "view html", you certainly can't read and understand it. The Facebook icon in the top right of the header uses CSS to output an "F" (actually Unicode \e8ba) with a blue background. It then links to a Slashdot Facebook page. a-href linking to content does not provide any information to the destination domain unless you click on it.

No, that's actually just a simple icon graphic with a link to Facebook. While some people use the Facebook SDK and plugins, even with all my ad/script blockers turned off, Slashdot doesn't load any Facebook content.

And here is The Onion's description from their web site.

The Onion is the world’s leading news publication, offering highly acclaimed, universally revered coverage of breaking national, international, and local news events. Rising from its humble beginnings as a print newspaper in 1765, The Onion now enjoys a daily readership of 4.3 trillion and has grown into the single most powerful and influential organization in human history.

They also present themselves as an informative source that people use to become informed on topics. How are they not a news outlet?

  6. It's got to get smarter on Spotify Continues To Grow Faster Than Apple Music Thanks To Free Tier (macrumors.com) · · Score: 0

I've tried Spotify (free version) numerous times since it launched. I've listened to and rated hundreds of songs, but the music suggestion algorithm on Spotify radio just sucks. I'm constantly skipping tracks because they play music I don't like.

I like Pandora, but their selection of music is so small. They tend to play music I like, but quite often it's a lot of remixes of songs I previously rated up.

  9. The average person/family can't save up enough money for a down payment on a home in 1 year, so saving $1200 per year is exactly the kind of money that allows you to buy real estate over time.

  17. I've always been a Nintendo guy, but they just don't keep up anymore. For me to upgrade from or to any console, here's what it needs so that I don't have a stack of devices sitting under my TV.

    • A device that supports full HD (or possibly 4K now).
    • Support playback of DVD/Blu-ray
    • Can also be used as a streaming device for TV content (Netflix, HBO Go, etc.)
    • Stream from my PC/mobile device to my TV
    • Has DVR functionality (Anyone? This seems like such an obvious feature for a device with a hard drive that connects to your TV, but no one does it.)

That would get me to pull out my credit card.

  18. Re:You keep using that word on Windows is the Most Open Platform There is, Says Satya Nadella (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

Was Nadella trying to twist the word "open" in the context of an IT talk for his own benefit? Probably.

You mean "open" in that users, IT, and developers are all allowed to use it?

Neither I nor the article said "allowed".

Is someone keeping Linux and macOS sheltered from any of these groups?

Sure, capitalism and the free market is.

    • Linux is free and people still choose Windows over it. I'm not saying it's better, but anyone can use Linux yet they don't.
    • Businesses would rather spend their budgets on Microsoft/Windows licenses than use a free product.
    • I'm sure they exist, but I've never seen a company (outside of graphic design and some IT departments) that used anything other than Windows machines for their workstations.
    • While their network/web may run Linux, most business/productivity platforms run on Windows servers. You want to make sure your network stays up, use Linux. You want your employees to get work done, you use Windows. It's not the best option, it's the only option.

Also keep in mind that Nadella was speaking to CEOs and upper management IT, so he was speaking to a business audience. Linux barley even has a foothold, let alone a platform for business users outside of the IT department. You can argue why, or talk about how evil Micro$haft is, but people are still choosing Windows over Linux by huge margins. So what's more open in this context? Something that everyone uses, is familiar with, has at home and at work, or something when you bring it up, the person says, "What's Linux?"

  19. Re:You keep using that word on Windows is the Most Open Platform There is, Says Satya Nadella (zdnet.com) · · Score: 1

He never said "open source", just "open" then went on to say that the platform is open to users, IT, and developers. By that definition, Windows is more open than Linux because no matter how hard you want it to be true, Linux is not open to normal users. The "year of the Linux desktop" still hasn't arrived.
