On my 486dx2/66 with 16mb ram, a 2mb trident video card, and 420mb or so hard disk (which was average hardware) at the time Windows '95 operated considerably slower then Windows 3.1/3.11 in regards to startup time, launching applications, and performing actions within applications.
an OS is made useful by the applications which are developed for it. If PalmApps continue to stay simple in design and functionality, while still being useful, then the OS is still alive.
If however it goes the way of Windows, where Windows 3.11 ran fine, Windows '95 ran slower, and Windows '98 ran even slower, yes the hardware and software that runs on it will eventually be placed 6 feet under.
Who released this patch that changes one byte though? I didn't see that on the BNETd site, because it never was. Until modified by Warforge, BNETd didn't even work with WCIII
Like all the other alternatives. Linux is a solution. It's not the solution for everything, it's not the answer to lifes problems, but it's a solution in some cases.
I think Sun's is WAY out of line making such a broad and unqualified statement.
I wonder if they want to trade, we'll even throw in the DMCA, try and get a superhero to fight THAT. It's like Bizzaro and an evil nekkid lesbo wonderwoman all in one.
As an afterthough, there are ALOT of programs that can be used for this.....
MSN Zone for 98/ME systems has an IPX emulation....
What if the BNETD changed to a different strat...instead of pretending to be a BNET server, pretend to be a LAN server and make the game think it's playing over network.
I don't think you can be charged with impersonating a network.:)
I'm all for stopping piracy, that puts money in the hands of the people that make the great games, but I won't be purchasing WarCraft III. Because of this I've just finished pre-ordering C&C Renegade.
Only one good thing can come out of this. We can finally shutdown those gamespy people.
It allows people to play games on their own server which emulates a LAN environment where CD checks normally don't occur. I know of at least 3 games where this occurs, but they are also games I have legitamately purchased.
If they go after bnetd which CAN be used to bypass... blah blah blah don't they have to go after other companies which provide the same type of circumvention?
naw, you can't blame the employees as much as I'd like to, not all of them anyway. What are you going to do, call tech support and bitch? We know the first level agents, the supervisors and those supervisors have nothing to do with that decision.
It may have been the outside legal firm that noticed this going on....sigh.
Maybe we should be writing them (not e-mail spamming) to show that actions like this CAN HIT THEM IN THE POCKETBOOKS.
I was going to purchase a game cube in the near future, because of this, I will no longer be making that purchase. This I'm sure can be said of many of the/. readers.
That won't do much good unless they know about it.
My non-geek gf wanted to know what I was reading so I showed her. The response was.

Thanks Taco...although this is the first time a geek web site ever got someone more sex (you), this is screwing me over. She wants to know why I didn't do something like this. I explained the story got rejected, but she doesn't believe me:(
Agreed. I've been trying to get a proper rogers connection since this past May. It goes down give or take every night and has been out the last week and a half straight. They've identified a problem, in fact they did that in June, I've escalated to every level they have, but nothing gets done.
I liked the subtle realism of having a brand name laptop recognizable in the game. Walking in to one of the rooms and seeing a ThinkPad X series laptop was pretty cool.

Take my statement in context.

... have any specs regarding connecting the unit to PCs and MACs to copy the software from inside various compusa stores?
We know who you are Mr Gates. Posting this anonymously. Shame on you.

... a violation of the DMCA?
Since the video card COULD be used for viewing illegally copied material (keep in mind fair use and legitimate use no longer have any meaning)
To quote Spock of the USS MPAA... The needs of the many...err...f' em

Did they mention the similarities in genetic mutatations?? They have Captain Doom, we have Microsoft.
0 legit uses of BNETD with warcraft 3.
You are correct.
But the BNETD project has nothing to do with warcraft 3, WARFORGE made a modification to it and because of the the BNETD project is suffering.
Cracks/hacks will always come out, because of his WARFORGE hack, BNETD which is a product with a legit use is suffering.

What about .CA? :)
If someone in canada registers www.slashdotsucks.ca that would be under Canadian law correct?
You didn't/don't buy the software anymore, you don't own it.
You own a license to use it in it's form after you've agreed to speicific terms set out in the EULA.

Yeah you're right. Imagine, someone would be able to find an exploit for windows now :)

I will pay more to them when/if I have a quality service with 90%+ uptime, like I had with Shaw Wave :)

If this IS to the death, I'd like to see contestants from Tempation Island and Survivor apply.
