We tend to forget that companies (from mom-and-pops to corporations) are nothing but a group of humans (investors, owners, board members, employees, etc) all working for a common goal. They need to worry about the future of the other 32,500 human workers and the thousands of human pensioners whose will be affected if Sun goes belly-up. So, yes, "what will this mean for the future of the company?" is a very important human related question.
"When we have the information highway, I'll put it out there. Everybody who wants to pay, I don't know, one cent, can see what movies I'm watching and what books I'm reading and certain other information. If I'm still interesting, I'll rack up dollars as people access that part of the highway." ~ Bill Gates - Source Playboy Magazine Interview, 1994
Looks like Bill is pulling another ol' switcheroo. He wants you to pay him so that he can watch you.
censorship (snsr-shp) n. 1. The act, process, or practice of censoring.
censor (snsr) n. 1. A person authorized to examine books, films, or other material and to remove or suppress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable. 2. One that condemns or censures.
It *is* cenorship and that is OK if that is what they want their business model to be. The one thing that caught my eye in the article was that 98 percent of all political donations by Google employees went to support Democrats. So which direction do you think the person(s) at Google authorized to examine books, films, or other material and to remove or suppress what is considered morally, politically, or otherwise objectionable are going to lean?
I think better business models would be to censor equally across the board (just about everything with a POV) or don't censor at all.
This is a Trademark, not a patent or copyright fight. The brewers of Bass Ale didn't invent the word Bass, they just trademarked it in conjunction with their triangle logo. Trademark law is supposed to help the consumers by eliminating confusion in the market place.
IANAIPL but my ex-wife is and she is always talking about how strange and vague trademark law can be. Her firm help trademark the shape of the Dean's Milk Chugs bottles. They used the Coca-Cola bottle product packaging trademark as the basis for their argument. So saying that consumers might be confused in the market place by a well known smiley face is not that odd or unethical.
Out of the last 9 programmers I've hired in the last two years, only two had CS degrees and we had to let them go. One is currently employed at Rally's Hamburgers (guess it was good that he learned how to solve a superset of problems in college). A CS degree doesn't necessarily prepare everyone to be useful. One of my best programmers barely got his GED.
Public services are NOT by definition the ability for my neighbor's teenage son to surf for pr0n. What's next? Free cable, telephone, food, clothing, medical care, shelter? Those are all as important (if not more so) than p0rn surfing. The next time I'm in a fancy restaurant, I'm going to refuse to pay on the grounds that food should be a public service. No, there are some things that we as individuals need to pay for.
No this law wouldn't. I do not agree with it, but all it really does is require warning labeling (like movies, cigarettes, wtc). Maybe we can find a possible silver-lining, if they get this law passed it might be difficult for them to try and ban this type of content in the future.
Just launch one of these into orbit. Can I have my $5 million bucks now?
Hasn't this been around for a while? According to this page, the password has been know for at least a month.

20 MB drive? Meh! When I was a kid we had an audio cassette player hooked up to the TI-99/4A and we thought we were in heaven.
You forgot to include a link to their international holiday site. It is also in September. Coincidence? I think not.

Just call it "it@cork Web Two-Point-Oh Half Day Conference".
A dirtyhippie explaining "why some drugs are addictive". Go figure.

"Did Uncle F**ker F**k a Monkey?"
This website on the other hand no longer is.
It *IS* available if you work for Sun.
"Who cares? All these awards shows are just about politics, anyway."
That's the same line people hear Tom Cruise mutter sometime in February/March of every year.
Take it you weren't nominated?
"The cancer resistance trait so far has been passed to more than 2,000 descendants in 14 generations,"
So that is all the Brain had to do.... find a cure for cancer.

You obviously haven't been to ND. I lived there for a couple of years. Slogan: "Why Not Minot?" Answer: "Freezin's The Reason"
"It's perfectly safe"
That's what the makers of the Optigrab thought too.
...or even news? The Big Crunch theory has been around for a long time.
OK...

What the??? Can we at least create a summary that doesn't sound like someone playing counter strike wrote it?
Could be worse.
I wasn't aware that there were any children in the US over 18.
Are you new to Slashdot?
Does that mean that the breasts can be fully exposed as long as they don't have nipples?
Yes, otherwise they would have to ban Barbie dolls.
