Not that our national goal is actually to eliminate our dependancy on oil, but here is another site about turning your car into a bio-diesel burning rig. This one has the backing of Darryl Hannah, no less.
Yes. And the loan has to be paid back. With interest. To the corporation, in the form of interest it made on that money. I'm always surprised when someone wants to put ever more power in the hands of ever fewer people. Now that's the ultimate abdication of responsibility.
Yes, that would definitely be true from an MTV type of perspective. We have developed ever shorter attention spans so that if something doesn't blow up or someone doesn't get shot every few minutes it doesn't hold people's attentions.
I saw 2001 when I was in grade school and I was completely fascinated, totally absorbed by what was happening on the screen. Not that I understood it, of course.:-)

Most films are are either child and fundamentalist reactionary safe (G)
You mean films such as 2001: A Space Odyssey? That's probably my all time favorite. I find that "adult" film really means adolescent film. I don't care to spend hours and hours filling my head full of blooshed and gore. There's a whole universe of stuff out there that could make for interesting films, but people are so in love with violence that that's what we get. Either that or just plain stupid, sappy stuff.
Long ago I decided to vote with my buck and just stop going to the movies.
Good point. I loved reading "In the beginning was the command line" but right now I'm slogging through Cryptonomicon. The former was fun, the latter is a soulless stroll through the grimness that is history. Come to think of it, the modern parts are the same way. I only keep reading because of the occasional mathematical and cryptographic discussions.
i, started out a radical liberal. But then, as I got older, smarter and grew up...
Interesting in that I had the opposite experience. I started out rather neutral, and then I was introduced to Ayn Rand. I hated it at first and then I sucked up most of what she wrote. As I got older (and smarter) I realized that this hardcore money-only driven way of thinking was far too shallow for human beings who have developed this amazing this called consciousness.
I think conservatives cling to their views because they provide easy answers. Good v. evil. Hard-working v. lazy. The "real world" that you hear conservatives talking about so much is far more complex than even they realize, and it includes people such as myself who care about making the world a more livable place.
I'm not sure where you got the idea that liberals want to be absolved of responsibility. In fact, the liberals that I know take on more responsibility by taking care of themselves AND trying to improve their surroundings.
The article is a little confusing. Near the top it states:
An exception is if an athlete has a personal Web site that they did not set up specifically for the Game
But two paragraphs later it says this:
Participants in the games may respond to written questions from reporters or participate in online chat sessions -- akin to a face-to-face or telephone interview -- but they may not post journals or online diaries, blogs in Internet parlance, until the Games end August 29.
It also says "athletes and other participants are also prohibited from posting any video, audio or still photos they take themselves, even after the games, unless they get permission ahead of time."
This seems ludicrous to me. I might buy into the part about not posting while the event is happening, but after the fact? These athletes are doing what for many of them is a once-in-a-lifetime event and then they're prohibited from sharing their stories and images afterwards? The ahtletes had to work damn hard to get there. The media just had to buy their way in and now they're going to keep the participants from using their personal imagery.
Oh,... and bonus points for this display of maturity:
what with them thar fedruhl judges legislatin from da bench and attackin our Christian heritage and whatnot
About as mature as the radcon phrase "weak-minded liberal." He's just learning to play by conservative linguistic rules.
Perhaps you're referring to this article in which Eason Jordan, chief news executive at CNN describes how CNN did not report many things because they feared for the lives of their reporters, translators and informants.
Not exactly related to parent, but to the article in general, you can listen to Cassini encountering the electo-magnetic bow shock as it approached Saturn here. There are also a bunch of other cool space sounds at this site.
As far as I'm concerned the video store can keep the $5 it cost me to rent this movie. They can't give me back what really counts, which is the precious time I wasted wondering if this movie was going to pull out of the sickening nose-dive it went into 5 minutes after the start. I was an idiot to ride it out.

I say vote your conscience man. Do it, do it, do it. Don't listen to the naysayers.
Basically, I'm with you on the idealism, but the problem is that the Republicans would be happy for you to vote your idealism because that way they will always win. When was the last time you saw a conservative question his party or candidate? You don't hear about it that much. They are united. They do not question the party line. And it works to the party benefit.
The Democrats seem constantly divided up between many camps. Kerry may be the lesser of two evils but I just will not stand by and watch conservatives turn this country into an intellectual, spiritual and (for most of us) economic wasteland. Yes, that sounds a bit harsh, doesn't it? Well, it's time liberals started playing by the same linguistic rules as the conservatives. It's time to make 'conservative' a dirty word.
Yes, govenment employees should be held responsible as we are paying the tab. But, that thing that produces nothing?
It may seem that the government produces nothing, until you start thinking about roads and police and fire fighters and the court system, not to mention the military and missiles and covert operations and other really expensive things.
And remember, something as good as market forces are in action here, through a mechanism called voting. You do vote, don't you?
For someone like me who has exactly zero devices--give or take none--in the house that need a remote control this would be exorbitant. But to the afficionado this is probably a price point that could be just the other side of a juicy rationalization.
I take it back about the remote control deficit. We have a Bose clock radio that has a remote control, for those times when I just can't be bothered to reach all the way across the bed.
but for the time being it's near impossible to merge organic with inorganic parts without heavy risks.
Agreed. Another entry point for infection is being created. But what if the interface didn't "break" the skin at all? We have pacemakers that operate completely inside the body. What if there was a tiny control unit placed completely under the skin and the communication with it was completey via inductance or something like that?
I'm skeptical of messing with neurotransmitters, though. That's what Prozac, et.al. do, not to mention LSD. The chemical balance of the body is very delicate. You might be attempting to load a book into your brain when you find yourself wondering where all those lizards crawling out of the walls came from.
Yep. I've always been mystified by that, even when I was young. Is it white guilt? Whatever it is, it's been going on for a long time. Clothing and music trends start with the young black people and they get copied and mainstreamed by middle class white kids who want to be "street" for some reason. Fashion and music wise it's cool for white kids to take their lead from the black kids.
The interesting thing is that it doesn't really work the other way around. Black kids who get good grades, show up for class, etc. are accused of acting "white."
Obviously I'm painting with a very broad brush here and making observations about race is always extremely touchy here in the USA, but I'm just noting that the culture exchange is not a two way street.
Some students do something cool in a contest and all most people are saying is "yeah, call me when it's really a car." Criminy. Articles on case mods get friendlier comments than this, and this is something that I would have thought geeks would have found interesting. Or nerds. Or whatever we are.
And what about it's value? Simon says it's hard to say; as it's only one of three in existence, it could be priceless.
Well, it certainly could be worth quite a bit and it is a fascinating find, but priceless? Perhaps they should list it with Sotheby's. Do you think it will fetch more than a Vermeer?
would Doctor Who, and bad Sci-fi movies have been without Where one of these for the sound effects?
Not only that, but what about the Beach Boys "Good Vibrations?" (Think about it. A Theremin is in there.) Here's a really interesting documentary on Leon Theremin and his invention.

Probably to the same extent that not everything is about race. But that wouldn't lead me to say "lousy black rights activists."

It's learned behavior from watching too many political ads.
Is that from Atlas Shrugged?

Possibly, but that money went into a CEO's golden parachute.
