I've eaten pieces of fresh habanero (on a dare), and while it was OMFG hot, the numbness didn't last more than 10 or 15 minutes, tops. I have a hard time believing that the capsaicin wouldn't be metabolized in the body pretty quickly, certainly within a day or two.
I mean, if this law is worded so open like that, it's true..ANYTHING could fall under it. FTP software, Web browsers etc etc. Why are they wasting their time with this crap when it WILL get overturned by the courts.
I dunno -- maybe they realize this, but still feel the need to throw their contributors a treat. More likely, however, that they just don't get it...
But how well do you like your SlimDevice squeezebox? I'm looking for something that looks nice (a wifely requirement) to hook up to the stereo to play mp3's from a file-share. If the squeezebox had a really nice remote like the Sono's, I'd jump at it, but for now, I'm holding off.
If you removed NULLs from relational database design, people would reinvent them (poorly) -- probably by using IDs of -1 or 0, or IDs to a special magic "null" row, which I suspect is what he's talking about by "it can be handled relationally." To suggest that missing or inapplicable values are not part of "the real world" is so wrong it's... well... wrong. Anyone who's actually done database work (or programming work, for that matter) knows this.
MattRog posted this just a few posts above, about how one could do away with nulls, and gain a (nominally, imho) greater approximation of reality.
Interesting read, and reminded me of a time or two when I've taken normalization to extremes. Personal experience tells me that: nobody's ever correctly modeled reality, and simple models are much easier to change and maintain than complex ones.
And what am I supposed to do? My ISP does not offer a mail server at all. They are not in the business of selling E-mail, they are in the business of selling internet connectivity.
I dunno, maybe find something else to whine about? If your ISP doesn't provide an SMTP server for you to relay off of, then they aren't bloody likely to start forcing you to use their [nonexistant] SMTP server, are they?
I so dearly love my iRiver(s). I bought an iFP-190TC for $200; and then I won 3rd in a contest from iRiver themselves and got an iFP-380T. Wonderful.
Looking for one to take jogging/skiing and that kind of rules out players relying on disks -- so do the iRiver flash players allow you to swap out the flash memory? And if so, what kind (CF/SD/etc)?
...I'm sure some resourceful/.'er could find at least one of his e-mail addys... maybe we could get that number from 150 up to 1500 a day or so. He's be REALLY happy then.
Ugh, you made me spew coffee all over my desk and keyboard. Good laugh tho.
The article had plenty of personal details, anybody out there NY up for an intervention?
At last, I can ask slashdot without being too off-topic! Gimp, like photoshop, is just too much for me -- I've recently made a full-time switch to Linux at home, and the one thing on my list of needed software is a SIMPLE photo editor (for fixing red-eye and not much else). I was pretty happy with PhotoImpression under Windows, but haven't found anything close to that level of simplicity under Linux. Anyone got any suggestions (preferably aside from Wine and Gimp) for something that runs well under Linux?
Quake 2 can run in software mode, full detail (except for the fake alpha blending), 1024x768x60fps on a K6-2 300 (and that's how I played it since it didn't like my video card at the time).
Bah. You'd be lucky to get over 20 fps at 640x480 in software rendering mode, and that would be with details turned to the "putrid" setting.

sadly, seems like any freebsd-cvs server near me is already swamped:-(
Here's another article I just read this morning at ComputerWorld: IT's Global Itinerary: Offshore Outsourcing Is Inevitable. An interesting read, and they do make it seem pretty inevitable.
Oh, and if I wasn't pessimistic enough:-)...if this actually DOES pan out...just wait until you see the price tag on 'em, because I'm sure she's going to patent absolutely everything out to wazoo, and one company will get exclusive rights. It'll also be years before we see 'em, as said company will want to protect its investment on current solar panel technology...
I think it was a fortune message I saw a really long time ago on a VAX in college that said:
"We will have cheap and efficient solar power just as soon as the electric utilities figure out how to run a sunbeam through a meter."
I don't want these, but I want to have the option to have them if I want. I don't want my ISP to automatically filter all my trafic. I want the option to get all my data or get filtered data. Once filtering is begun, it becomes easier to filter other less desirable thing. (Even if it isn't less desirable for the end customer)
Your ISP has a lot more bandwidth than you do -- it makes sense for them to filter out the garbage that you couldn't possibly need. (Don't get me wrong, it should still be a choice, [defaulting to filtered]). I suppose the computational resources might be too great, but I'd be tickled pink if my ISP never bothered to route another 'GET/default.ida?XXXXX...' my way.
Sure, it's anonymous to the Iranian government, but the outfit running the anonymizer has some highly detailed logs to use for intelligence purposes...
I'm looking for recommendations on a jabber client (for Win32 and Linux platforms). Also, recommendations on a well-connected public server in the US would be most useful.
My daughter and her friends are hooked on instant-messaging, and they are all keen on MSN messenger -- I figured it'd be harmless enough, 'til I noticed that when she clicks on her "X new email messages" link, it launches InternetExplorer to go visit hotmail -- despite my having set Mozilla up as the default browser. So anyways, that was *my* push to find an alternative...
This is a very poor article, which makes a very poor analogy....snip... Might as well have titled the aticle, "Don't Write Software for Windows, or You're A Coon!" Pathetic.
This is a ridiculous summary you've put together, Mr Fux. It was in no way mean-spirited or racist, seems to me it was just a playful way to point out the dangers of vendor lock-in, that's all.

Hey, you've been spying on us, haven't you! I told the boss we needed to get a patent on our development process ASAP, dammit!
I'd be happier if they apologized for making St. Anger (the album). Have you heard that steaming pile yet? The title-track single was only the tip of the crapberg.
LOL!!! I agree. I think the band must've decided that the best way to combat downloading of their music was to make it so awful that nobody would bother.

Win2K would *still* be perfectly fine, too bad it's not supported any more.

Damn, that's good thinking!
Google is way too dominant (for now, at least) for vaporware announcements by Microsoft to have any effect.
Any authoritative debunkings yet? Seems like there wouldn't have been any static charge left after he'd already zapped the carpet...

I've been there too many times myself, having foolishly volunteered to help friends and acqaintances "fix" their pc's. /me pats his natbox lovingly.
