Actually it was HP and Intel. Much of the problem with the Itanium is while the EPIC architecture sounds like a really good idea in practice it has never worked all that well. Much of the philosophy behind EPIC is to move all optimization from the CPU to the compiler. Well, HP, Intel and lots of people with giant brains have tried to make the first great EPIC compiler but so far, no luck.
Just to go off topic for a bit. My wife just recently bought a Konica-Minolta Magicolor 2430-DL printer. Great printer, great price, reasonable priced consumables. The built in ethernet print server supports OSX and Linux out of the box. I didn't even know they made printers. Much less good ones. You can get them for $350 (if I remember correctly) at Costco. It's a much better deal then the inkjet ripoff.
The article states: "The government contends it needs the Google data to determine how often pornography shows up in online searches."
Why can't they just use the search engines and look at the results? How are they going to determine which results are "pornographic"? That's an awful lot of data to process to look for something as subjective as pornography. If they are just interested in the relationship between queries and results why are they requesting IPs?
The whole thing sounds like a fishing expedition for a bunch of porn related arrests. The whole thing stinks. I'm glad Google has the guts to stand up to them.
I would love to get away from PHP and use more Python, Ruby, Perl, what have you except all the cheap hosting solutions have the canonical shared Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP setup and not much else. OTOH, if I had to setup something on a dedicated server I'd probably go with Django.
Not that I hate PHP. It's just the horrible PHP code you find all too often. Hopefully frameworks like Symfony will change that.
The problem is that you don't have to be good. You just have to be better then your competitors. Like the old joke "I don't need to outrun the bear. I just need to outrun you."
That's if Dell sticks with what they're good at. Predictable, gray, generic Windows boxes. When they go for "cool" it's like seeing Alan Greenspan in a mosh pit.
Not just Unix, It's Open Source. If you look under the hood there's Samba, OpenSSH, VNC, Bash, Python, Perl, vim (yea!) and so on. All their spiffy dev tools (based on the GCC toolchain) are included so it's easy to get up and coding. User friendly and geek friendly. It's a powerful combo.
Does anybody really know what time it is I don't Does anybody really care care If so I can't imagine why about time We've all got time enough to die Oh no, no
However, region coding IS short bus stupid. It depends on DVD players being too expensive to own more then one. Gads, how much brain damage do you need to believe consumer electronics will stay expensive?
Loyalty? Gads that is so dead in the modern workplace. The appearance of loyalty, yes. In reality, no. Loyalty needs to work both ways and I haven't seen a company in years that has earned any.
The 8 glasses a day is a myth in many cases. However, increased fluid intake is needed if (like me) you have a history of kidney stones. I'm supposed to pass 2 liters of fluid a day to keep the kidneys flushed. There are some types of stones that require you consume a gallon of water a day 1/3 of which needs to be drunk at night. That would require some very short, very wide glasses.
This should make it more embarrassing when their DRM is cracked within 90 days of release. Not that the media mafia really cares or anything but at least we'll get a laugh.
I'm not surprised. That man craves media attention more then dignity. I'm sure we'll be hearing from him again. Thompson isn't the sort to get worked up over. He'll just embarrass himself publicly and lose any credibility he has left (if any). Just be thankful he isn't competent. His media whoring makes his cause look as ludicrous as it is.
Go make some popcorn, sit back and enjoy the show. It looks like it's going to be a good one.
Ahhh, the last gasps of a outdated and useless bureaucracy trying to justify its existence. There are many congressmen who want to eliminate the FCC altogether. The main ones trying to keep it alive just want it as a censorship organization. Regulating the internet is like trying to regulate the sun.
I've been playing my DS a lot lately because of Mario Kart. It seems people have overlooked one of my favorite DS games: Zoo Keeper. It's like Bejeweled but better. The stylus control is excellent and you can add to a combo while it's in progress and unlike the other Bejeweled clones, you are rewarded for running out of moves instead of it ending the game. It's cheap at $20 new and if you have 2 DSs the multiplayer is a blast. I also like the weird messages at the end of each game. My wife calls them "evil fortune cookies."
I think the definition of "success" is that spam is now mostly someone else's problem (i.e. China, Russia, Korea) rather then our own. In a way it's a success for very small values of success.
BTW Does anyone else wonder if people at real mortgage companies can even use email? I would think a significant chunk would end up trapped in spam filters.

Now we're all gonna reminisce and be sad. Thanks.
*SNIFF* I miss the Alpha.

I like to play it while Paco lies next to me.

The guy who runs Weather Wars probably thinks people believe him now. Look at all that traffic!
It just frightens me that you know that and read Slashdot. Are you sure this is where you want to be?
Now someone is going to be hawking the "Donald Trump Penis Patch" in my email.
OK It's out of my system now.

It's just that 9 letters 2 vowels (both e) thing that's getting my poor Midwestern US brain confused.
Hey, I'm allowed after having Scandinavians butcher my last name for 18 years while growing up in Minnesota.

I always thought Guido sounded like a name for someone who breaks kneecaps for a living.

I hear there's some good eatin' on them mammoths. Ever see the Flintstones?
