  3. Trashy Americans? on US Population to Top 300 Million · · Score: 3, Insightful

America has a disposable culture. Even things that are made to last for more than one use have a limited lifespan. Things are not engineered to last, and are cheap enough to replace rather than repair. Durable goods used to be things that were expected to be last for at least 10 years. This included cars and refrigerators. Over time the definition of durable goods has changed so that they are only good for 3 years, and only includes cars.

Even our cars are pretty much designed to fall apart after 3 years of regular use. How can American's not be leaders in producing trash in this kind of environment. Only good note is my mother in the law is a packrat and has not thrown hardly anything away for the last 30+ years. But I guess she is just a minor rounding error on the average.

I spent a couple years of my life in college as a Radiological Technologies major. I loved the hard science, but hated the application. My advisor was urging me to finish up and specialize in radiation therapy. This was mostly because I am not really a people person and "radiating" people "near" to death to possibly kill cancer would not have phased me. Least not while I was hiding behind a lead wall. *wink* I was scheduling a class to learn how to draw blood when I finally made the choice to change direction. So I changed majors to Computer Science, struggled my way thru the advanced math courses. I am not bad at math. I had to learn everything from basic algrebra thru second level calculus. I graduated about two years after the bubble burst. I now have a fairly descent job as a systems admin and I know I am happier than I would have been "nuking" people. But I know I am not suited for the Health Care service industry. And many other people are not suited for it either. Is the idea of varied jobs for a widely diversified labor force just a pipe dream? I guess if the employer does not understand the value of that previous experience and they judge you soley on payscale, then the newbie kid developer who will work for $10/hr will win out everytime.

  21. 3D Engines Game editors on Why Johnny Can't Code · · Score: 3, Interesting

The editors for 3d games are unbelieveably powerful. I remember spending many an hour tinkering with the original Unreal editor. It was easy for even a novice to use a getting started tutorial to build their own map/level/world.

The editor presented the world as a 3D solid and you would cut away "rooms" and then apply textures. You could easily make an in-door or outdoor scene complete with sky, water, light sources, etc.

You could put together simple shapes to create complex objects, then script them easily to move around or even react to the player character in the game.

To really get complex reactions from the environment, or to get the lighting/shadows right required some understanding of basic math/trig, but even that is not that hard and the tutorials pointed you in the right direction.

This is about as close to the "wow factor" that I got from doing simple shapes on a TRS-80 back in the old days. Coding up your own version of Bezerk was awesome. Creating your own worlds and getting to explore them was almost as thrilling.
