My expiriance with wiring from the ground up is that you cannot plan for everything. You'll always think of something else that you wanna do with your existing scheme, and need to pull more wire. So conduits are the only option.
As for fiber, I've never had to pay for it, but I've had to work with it. Its not worth the effort to use it, go high quality cat-5, and if ya want, then ya can go GigE. I'm told fiber is cheap to buy, expensive, and hard to run, and the hardware to talk over it is murderously expensive. But maybe even the cable itself is expensive, I dunno, used it, don't like it, don't wanna think about paying for it.

As for what to put in the cables, its whatever ya wanna do with it. Me, right now, I;d run s-video, cat5, and coax, and maybe whatever the current "buzz" cable type is, and at least 4 outlets in each small room, 6 to 8 in big rooms. Else, your wife/significant other will go mad when she can't move the TV. And put em fairly close to your electrical outlets, so ya can just take all your cables that are close together, and tie em together with zip ties, and make the mess behind your euipment a little more pleassent.
yes, I own the card. the software used with the card is what they are running, and I seriously doubt that you can play dvd's in hardware or software over vmware.

One screenshot has Hollywood Magic Plus DVD software in it, its windows software, and they claim VMWare, but I seriously doubt DVD playing works all that well through a virtual machine. VMWare struggles to make office seem peppy on all but the newest machines.
yeah, everything you are saying is great, and your right, nothing I said HAS to be true. But prove me wrong. 9 out of 10 laptops issued will be damaged in some way within one year. 2 out of 10 will not work at all. 99 out of 100 won't work to 10% of their potential.

The kids break em, and the "admin" is a teacher, elected in a popularity contest, who doesn't always know what they are doing. My mom ran, she knows computers, but it was her first year in a new school, so no one voted for her. She got sick of having to swap files over floppy disks, so she, herself, set up windows fil;esharing, with one of the pc's as a master server. And each student just stores everything on one machine..... the "admin," had her computers reformatted because my mother, "hacked them."
Never blame the teachers, blame the suits. Its the suits that force censorship software through that blocks google, yet doesn't block my personal page (which is full of swear words).
Then there is these learning programs, where "computer experts" come in, and explain what a mouse is, and why you should use it. They patronize the kids, so they get bored.
Don't blame teachers, there are plenty of stupid ones, but when it coems to computers, they get a stcok windows 95 install with ms word added on, and that is IT. And man do they get busted if they install software without going through the proper "channels." yet, for some reason, the commercials on TV regarding computers in the classroom show kids making 3d movies with Mya, and exploring some flash infested web site. Nope, sorry folks, but in a given week, any one of my mother computers doesn't even boot up right.

1 student, who has an obvious talent for computer use will install PPC Linux on his machine, and proceed to fail computer class, because he can't run MS Word. But only after he has improved bandwidth for the entire school by hacking into the school's router and altering the routing tables for much better performance.

And as a laptop owner, I feel qualified to state that very few people on this planet have any need to own one. There are many misconceptions about laptops that just drive me nutty. And the truth behind them them all are great reasons why laptops in elemantary and high schools is a really dumb idea.
In our society, laptops are cute, small, handy computers. WRONG! In reality, laptops are small, slow, hard to handle, hard to service, and EXPENSIVE AS HELL. A touchpad is not like a mouse folks, that keyboard takes some getting used to, and they aren't exactly the most rugged pieces of machinary. Add all that togther, plus a complete lack of need in our schools for each student to have the ability to get his daily pr0n fix when he should be learning geomtry, and you have some politicians way of getting relected, at the taxpayers' extreme expense.
I'm sorry, computers in schools right now barely get used, laptops will get misused, and mistreated, and eventually become worthless paperweights..... all at the taxpayers expense.

They do exist, LImeWire for Linux, most goffed up awful install for linux I have ever seen. Installs the binaries in your home directory, and mangales the permissions so that everyone on the sys can see and execute them, and the share locations. I hate stuff that acts like windows software on a *nix system. I'm sure more exist. Call me anal, but I want my Linux/BSD/Unix systems to act like what they are, UNIX, not Winblows!
I can't speak for all fo them, but AfterStep is undergoing a pretty big change, and as far as I know Enlightenment is getting a total rewrite. That'll slow down developement something fierce. Then ya look at some of the minimal ones, notably Blackbox and Sawfish, they both do what they were intended to do. new features aren't in the focus of some of the more minimalistic projects, so anything at this point is bug fixes. I don't know much about WindowMaker, but they could be working on a very new release, which could be in pre alpha states right now. Check the CVS of your favorites out and take a look, some of the code in the afterstep 1.9 is just great, but last time I checked, I still couldn't get it to compile completely.
Wen are people going to learn that dual whatevers do NOT make the PC twice as fast. I have dual 400's, I don't go around saying I have an 800 mhz pc, because I don't. I can't do any ONE thing at 800 mhz, I can do TWO things at 400. Loads of difference here peope.

Personally, I could cxare less about the consumer getting better educated. If they keep pumping hundreds of dollars out for high end chips, it keeps the chip makers pumping newer and faster stuff. I don't NEED a P4 4ghz, I don't NEED anything more than my dual celeron 400, but with high end stuff leaving my machine in the dust, I can easily afford a nice upgrade for my dual cel board to maybe, dual 766's? I don't need it, but iots peanuts for extra power. Let the fools shell out 450 bucks for a power house, I'll pay 35 bucks for something that's plenty good enough, plus a little extra for shits and giggles.
