Hmm.. DVD - licensing fee to anyone who wants to make their own commercial DVD. Digital projecter - licensing fee to anyone who wants to project content on it.
IBM - you can't make stuff for the IBM PC 'cos its ours. Compaq - Screw you, we have made the 'Open IBM PC' now anyone can do what they like (Ok, so it wasn't quite like that but you get the idea)
Some Company - Look, we have designed a new multimedia storage format, anyone can use it for free. Also we make projectors for free content too.. now the MPAA is screwed.
MPAA - aah, but your [some company] formats don't include the federal DRM system, sue them Hollings.
Hollings - Die [some company], my 133t capitalist powers will crush you with bribes and insider sabotage!!!
Some company - Oh no you won't 'cos we're off-shore BAH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA AAA.
Hollings - Damn!! BUSH, attack!!!!
Bush (G.W) - PH34R my 133t P0w3rZ, i will nuke you [some company]
Some company - Go go super rangers (note super-rangers is not a registered trade mark), attack the evil!!!
Super Rangers (non TM/R) - The SR's fight back with their... large sums of money: "Bribe BUSH!!! Bribe Hollings!!!, you will accept our bribes and not attack!!!"
But wait! here comes Lucas - Now I, Lucas of Earth will destroy free speech forever. Ms. Portman, remove your clothing.
Ms. Portman - I shall crush you [some company]. With my large amounts of make-up and large... um.. no longer will you allow amature film-makers to get recognition, only rich studios will be able to afford the licensing fees to make movies. And thats just aswell since George signed me up for another 12 star-wars films... all with Jar Jar binks!!!
My 60GXP was from Hungry to - it died. I wonder if it wasn't IBMs fault (i.e not bad design) but bad manufacturing that killed half the deskstars. Thats what you get when capitalist-pig corporations use cheap labour to make more money.
Its true what they say - that love is blind. People will go on supporting something even if they hate it. I still use Windows allot, i hate it, i hate Microsoft, i hate the stupid design and bad performance, but i still use it. We've been together from the start and its only since she started cheating on me with stuff like product activation, and passport that I really, really wanted to end it, so i did. I tried SuSE, shes great, but i always end up booting Windows. Just recently i met a girl called BeOS. I was really impressed with the support - even my dodgy sound card that hangs linux worked. But she still didn't _feel_ right you know? Maybe it was the mouse, i don't know. Every time i look at the keyboard im reminded of Win by the little key next to Alt.
Once a company has you, your their bitch. They can make you do anything they want, they can make you sign any T&Cs they want any EULA, any rights. Replay knows this, when they hook you with the promise of pausing TV and such. Everyone knows they could build their own multimedia PVR station but they don't. They could write the front-end and tie the devices together. They could put in any drive they wanted and copy anything to anywhere. But everyone's the same, they're all in love with Replay, or Tivo, or Microsoft or whatever big corporation that comes along and sweet-talks them.
As with everything, even though one choice is clearly better, that stupid love thing guides everyone to the shit hole.
Thats what capitalism gets you - everyone for themselves to make as much money as posible. Most politicians would sell their own kids if they would make enough. And since the CIA etc. _trained_ half the worlds rulers and terrorists it would stand to reason that it would give them a going away present of maybe a couple of warheads and some bombers. That reminds me, does anyone know the going price of weapons grade plutonium?
Opera is much faster than IE and the interface is much smarter. You would think Microsoft would copy it but they are obviously to incompetent. Its just the little things that make it good - like the way i can CTRL+SHIFT Click on a link and it will open it in a new window in the _background_ thus i don't even have to stop reading the page. Absolutly perfect for anything like slashdot or e2. Not to mention the way i can carry on from where i left after a crash (when windows crashes, you loose all 30 windows you had open).
Oh My God!!!! i think im going to cum with excitement. Is it at all possible to play Golf!?! on a phone?!?! never before have i seen such incredible technology come into play (no pun intended). It certainly isnt possible to download games like this onto any of the PDAs out there, and of course, none of those PDAs can talk to each other anyway because no-one has invented infra red, cell-phone connectivity, GSM cards, or connecting cables. Wow, i have to hand it to them. I would never have been able to come up with the following ideas on my own:
1) A phone thats like a PDA in that you can connect it to your PC and download 3rd party software onto it.
2) A phone thats like a PDA in that it _is_ a phone and a PDA in the same device.
Its much like Britney. Except Natalie was actually much more attractive a couple of years ago, where as Britney has always been an average-looking dumb cheerleader-bimbo with little-to-no talent. Its all about hype, popularity and the stupid trendyness/x-factor. But anyway.. here are some good one-liners:
-Natalie Portman and 'Insert' in the same sentence, yeah baby.
-They can insert her into any film
-Error: Please insert Natalie Portman to contine...
-I hope she inserts herself into my life
-I've got something you can insert
-Look, my light-sabre has grown 2 feet!
-I bet she enjoys a good insertion
No, but seriously, falling in love with the dark side is evil.
If the US Gov./FBI come over there, the Australians/British will tell them to f*ck off. Well - maybe not the British seeing as Tony is in love with Bush.. well maybe in fact, seeing as Bush dumped him for that Russian guy.. yeah, i think Tony's pretty pissed off at the moment. Anyway, it sure is a good thing that other countries have nukes too, otherwise the USA _would_ be rulers of the world, and making 747-simulators in your back-yard would be illegal everywhere.
Interesting, you've almost restored my faith in DVD. Atleast it means we (PAL) get getter quality than the yanks (who needs 30fps) oh... except the audio problem:( I know that on video they electronically lower the pitch of the audio to make up for this.. why don't they do the same for dvd?
What about DVD on computers? surely they can output at 24fps... well i know they can if i rip the mpeg stream onto my hd:)
I blame MS Word... And the fact that i can't edit posts... and "thats" wasn't that bad (if geeks can get away without capitals they can get away without " ' ".
"they're" was un-acceptable. I did beat myself several times though, and now i will retract the whole post, just on those two mistakes. It was his fault, he is a criminal, he should get the electric chair and so should I.
No, i'm sorry but i don't see the crime here. Sure the guy is a complete f*cking asshole, but thats still legal (unfortunately, as there are many many assholes around). If you type in the wrong url, thats your fault. If he was spoofing other sites or using they're graphics, thats a copyright issue. But opening pop-ups no matter how many is the fault of the browser.. and seeing as most people use IE, its Microsofts fault, just like with vbs virii (funny how its always their fault)
"Victims of the scam should contact the commission"
What victims??!? the stupid users who used stupid browsers that have bad security? (yes pop-ups are a security issue when they start eating your resources). What about the stupid advertising companies? he was in breach of their contract, they should have cancelled it.
Apparently the FTC got ticked after having to close 64 separate browser windows! - judging by the use of the word "task bar" lets assume he was using MS Windows
Well thats what you get when you use MS windows and IE. I would be pretty ticked too, but not at the site, at the appalling software design of Microsoft who hand the responsibility off saying "ohhh trusted system" no it isn't, its simple. Don't let sites spawn 100's of windows with your browser. Put in the necessary function to filter this, let the user say yes or no, let them close all the spawned windows at once, make the browser scan the script for this stuff. stupid developers.
And a question. Is the NTSC stuff encoded on the DVD or is it an artifact of the conversion from digital to analong of the image?
Since NTSC is about 30fps (well 29.97) and PAL is 25fps they record DVDs in different formats i think (lets ignore SECAM). I thought a much smarter solution would be to store the film at 24fps on the disk (ie cinema speed) and then do the conversion in the DVD player itself. Since allot of new TVs can show both formats, it stands to reason that you could build tvs to show 24fps. Also, lots of newer displays have grown up with DVD - plasma and all that, so they could have designed them for 24fps. Not only that, but a good deal of people watch DVDs on their computers that can certainly play 24fps. Maybe im wrong, i don't know.... also, the tv-out on my computer will let me show mpegs etc. on my tv screen (PAL - old) at different speeds with no flicker.. I think its just another example of stupid old formats and conventions.
Region encoding is much more than a format barrier replacement. Its simply there so the they can get more money. Staggered releases and different prices, its all evil capitalist/corporate pig stuff. The whole thing sucks
This is sick. People don't realise that when they by a Tivo (and whatever anyone says, i still think they are just another evil company) you are signing a contract that says "we control this box". People must understand this, otherwise it is deceptive advertising. It should be put clearly on the front of the cardboard box or the advert or whatever "we control this box". I will never buy one of those stupid things anyway, not when i could build my own that wasn't controlled by someone else, didn't restrict what you could do, and would allow me to burn some cds too. I'm still looking for decent PVR software projects, and btw i just started playing with BeOS, what does anyone think about using it for a PVR? - it has some good hardware support (pitty about the abandoning of it) and seems pretty stable, plus it loads in seconds. I managed to get my tuner working in about 10 mins.
Obviosly the US is running without a working government. The same incompetent government that _didn't_ fix the problems of airport and cockpit security, is now trying to oust its self again. After coming up with the absolutely brilliant "DMCA" they had to go for another winner with the "SSSCA" now, before thats even up and running, and as if their blatent incompetence is already not enough, they are going to try again. Lets not even go into the encryption backdoor thing, the patriot acts or any of the other things. I wouldn't trust these people to run a country let alone a... oh, no wait, thats not right, ok: - i would be very afraid if these people had the nuclear codes... no sorry, ok: - I wouldn't trust them to run an airport let alone a co.. no, ummm: good thing politicians are good people, otherwise, with all those bribes they might.... oh nevermind.
Thats not funny because its actually true. Plus, i've already been in trouble with slashdot for thretening the president in a post (it was removed):
http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/02/17/2082 14 &mode=nested - (remove the space before '&mode' - stupid slashdot, several of the comments say "This comment has been removed" in red, with an explination)
now those "CD Markers" you can buy which are sold for marking on your CD-Rs etc. are going to face the courts.. oh, no, i live in England so im safe from your pathetic laws
I'm surprised that the tech industry, especially slashdot isn't taking proper advantage of the current situation. Shame on you, just think of all the jobs around at the moment to develop copy-protection/drm systems - no, obviously im not saying you should actually try and develop a good system (if thats even possible) what im saying is that you could work for these companies and produce equally bad systems and make lots of money. not only that, but you could purposely build in back doors. These companies simply must understand that they are inferior, stupid people, and we are all laughing at them while gnutella runs in the background:)
- oh yeah, and the pen thing? I've known for along time that pens are very dangerous. They allow people to express ideas, write encrypted messages (you can do simple encryption with pen, paper, and calculator) and even let people draw pornographic pictures (well that's pretty much all I did in art class). Pens and all other writing equipment should be replaced with government approved electronic note-pads that scan the user input for illegal ideas, and banned words and just delete them.:)
Well, thats the American way. Apparently its supposed to be the best way, personally i don't see it, but then, if a country wants to screw its self up who am i to stop them.
Filter it filter it filter it... i'd like to see a prank (hack, whatever) to install ad filtering software on as many (windows) machines as possible, using a combination of virii, and hi-jackings of the software currently distributed with other programs (for example, there are pre-cracked versions of KaZaA around the internet - they could be distributed with ad-blocking software hidden inside - oh the irony. At the moment its too hard for the average user to install ad-blocking software (i got bored just looking for a decent program) if the code could be put on a number of machines it would bring the advertisers down over night, im sure allot of anti-globalist/capitalist/etc groups would be happy to take part in such a project.
No, the reason is that most people who use Flash, are, well.. um lets just say, they went to *art school* if you know what i mean. They think they can use software without Reading-TFM, then they come up with bad designs. They can't afford to pay for Flash so they crack it, i cracked Flash once - but you know what, i did allot of crazy things back in collage that i regret, some involving live animals, others involving wood glue and skirts. I don't use flash, or though i sometimes use 3D-Max (yes i did read the manual), i'm trying to move to free software but its hard (ie the blender incident). I'm not saying that all art students are dumb - i did a-level art, but i've learn't my lesson and gone a more technical path. As everything is dumbed down, its very easy to get stupid (you can see how its affected my spelling) sometimes art students are dumb... god, that sounded dumb
Lets just hope these people license/copyright this under good intentions and hope that the corporate pigs don't get their trotters on it to ban all forms of write-enabled drive. Knowing the MPAA/RIAA they will want this thing locked down tight - i don't blame them, but really, its none of their goddam business. DVD is, lets face it, a crap product, its not that much bigger than a CD (compared to CD vs. 1.44 floppy) CD is still around because its the biggest media that can be cheaply and easily written to, and almost certain to have a drive capable of reading it on the target computer. We need a good cheap media.
I think you'll find that your US Constitution clearly states that i have the right to believe what i want. I believe i don't want to buy CDs, therefore i won't ever - look if filesharing was somehow stopped, if the SSSCA came in to power, if people were burnt at the stake for pirating music or buying or trading or owning illigal copy-protected data, i would not by a CD. If the satan himself declared that he would burn every man, woman or child that was involved in pirate material, or if all computers or filesharing devices were destroyed, I, would not by a CD. How much more do i have to explain - its simple, i will never buy a CD. But, i will get pirate music for free. I don't care what you say, it doesn't matter, i have no morals? maybe, i am breaking the law? - almost certainly, i care? i don't think so.
What gives you the right to use OUR computers. Yes we did. No, we were first.

I don't care what you say, it doesn't matter, i have no morals? maybe, i am breaking the law? - almost certainly, i care? i don't think so.
