Theres no way they can do this transparently - the obvious method people think of, man-in-the-middle could easily be thwarted if the two callers just read eachother a portion of their key/hash at the start of the call, try man-in-the-middling that! This is only barely viable on proper VoIP services. Things like skype and open source programs as well as encrypted email and IM arn't going to be touchable by them.

  5. Re:Wrong Paradigm on AutoPackaging for Linux · · Score: 1

Linux is all about choice and like it or not most Windows users are stuck in this method and if they are going to switch to linux they'll want it to be just as easy. When i want some sort of program ill want it now, i don't want to waste time reading man pages, finding dependencies, watching builds or copying and pasting errors into google. Sure i could be downloading any kind of trojan program from a random website, it could delete all my data or try and phone home with my passwords but hell, i live on the edge. Production servers are of course a different matter. Personally i love the OSX way of just dragging an icon out of an archive and into your apps directory. The ideal way is to have distros do all the work like you say, but distros will never have every program - theres always something im gonna want to install that doesn't come in the package or binary that i need, one big autopackaging system is idea.

The only people who really win in all this are the media companies, and lets not get started about 'campaign contributions', bribery and 'e' voting, the FEC shouldn't even be looking at the internet with all these problems.

Great, a law that makes perfect sense and we're gonna screw it up. The right wing in me says that I don't trust the masses to make that sort of decision especially when some cultures (no names) have particular preferences as to which sex is born the most. The left wing part of me says its none of my business to decide how people procreate, its not likely to affect me. The problem is that we risk ending up with some stupid 'quota' system where people are told "sorry you can only have x many boys or girls".

  19. Its already been accepted by the masses on When Would You Accept DRM? · · Score: 1

Unfortunately we've already accepted DRM, DVD's have it (and restrict when you can fast forward), Games consoles have it, your iPod has it, even mobile phones have it (network lock-in) all these things are widely accepted and while most (all?) have been cracked and have generated black-market support industries, its only a matter of time before hardware starts coming with hardcore protection - tamper proof chips that break if you try anything, DRM thats actually designed by competent engineers (wtf?) and real restrictions on what you can do.

At the moment the industry is fucking their cake and eating it too - not only do they have DRM but they also have the DMCA to stop you even attempting to break it, they're being greedy at the expense of my liberty and customer satisfaction they only need ONE of those two things, if that. Personally I believe that I have the right to do whatever the hell I want with my property in my home (building nuclear weapons etc not included obviously).

The problem is that most of the time these idiots end up hurting other people - eg their kids (yes yes i know, don't let them procreate) or random passers by. When an idiot crashes their car for example, they are usually protected by their layers of fat and car impact zones, where as the person they hit is killed. When they can't call 911, its usually their kid that ends up dying, when they release toxic chemicals somewhere stupid, its everyone else that ingests them. No, you have to think carefully about each safety label you remove and each law you don't make - will it just help idiots make Darwin awards or will it affect someone else?

  21. Re:Is Vonage the right person to sue? on Texas Attorney General Sues Vonage over 911 · · Score: 4, Interesting

Theres an extra level of complexity added when people move - there was a case where a mother called 911 when her kid stopped breathing and she transferred through about 3 call centers before her kid died because there was some confusion about her address in the databases. There was some legislation to mandate GPS in cell phones if i remember right?

I think it would be useful if there was some number (say 922) that people could call that would let them know that their phone would go to the correct call center in an emergency and that the call center would know their address, the problem is that people are lazy and 8/10 homes will never check, sometimes socialism is needed to stop idiots hurting themselves lol.

  22. Garh on Utah Governor Signs Net-Porn Bill · · Score: 2, Insightful

This really is the stupid way to do things, young kids (say up to 8 or 10) only need a small selection of websites they do not need to traverse the wide sea of knowledge on the internet until they are old enough to deal with whatever they find there. Websites that are suitable for kids should apply for a rating that proves they are suitable, then a list of good sites can be compiled and if you want you can set your ISP to only allow good sites. The advantage of this is as follows:

-'Bad' sites may try and get themselves off a black list by constantly adding alias addresses.

-There is NO way to get all the 'bad' sites on a list, it only takes 1 site to 'ruin' a childs life.

I was given full net access, to my room, no restrictions, when I was about 13. I'd say if you can't handle being able to see what you want to see at 13, you can't handle life.
