  1. Hopefully soon.. on When Hybrids Do (And Don't) Make Sense · · Score: 2, Insightful

...I really do hope the US hits $6+ soon
Guys its for your own good, everyone else manages. Once the US is forced into alternative cars they will start to make more sense, the industry just needs that boost to get things like battery advances and incentives for hydrogen stations (if that's the best way) and charging places. If I was in the US right now I wouldn't even consider buying a car that couldn't at least plow through a bull. They need fuel prices to go through the roof so people will start changing the cars they buy.

  2. Re:Who would buy a 10 year old Prius? on When Hybrids Do (And Don't) Make Sense · · Score: 1

I think its almost certain that in a few years battery advances will mean pretty significant changes in price and performance, but those advances will only come if there's a market for it - i.e batteries will only get cheaper and better in the future if people show an interest now, so even if you don't buy one, make sure someone knows that you're interested.

Perhaps someone could fill me in on why so many online news articles are lacking pictures when the entire story is useless without them?

Fuck, they're not even releasing the thing in 12 hours they're just opening a website about releasing it and people are flocking. Any product with this much PR bull shit around it has got to be a flop.

  6. Hmm on 24 Mb Consumer Broadband Launched · · Score: 1

As we all know, the entire global consumer broadband industry is totally reliant on P2P file sharing to fuel it. Where are the video streams (that anyone wants to watch)? Where is this amazing 'rich multimedia content' (i don't count an embedded midi file). People watch dodgy streams like the winamp TV library (full of p0rn, ripped TV shows, music videos and home-made TV shows. There's also a few news feeds. After that its P2P which must account for even more than the geek software download bandwidth. I guess theres iTunes which is catching on but its in the ISP's best interests to make sure that there's enough pr0n, 0days, is0s & mp3z and of course torrentz to keep their customers wanting more and more broadband. OK OK, I know its useful for other things - emailing large attachments and getting work done but we all know the real reasons.

  7. Meh on First modernized GPS satellite Launched · · Score: 1

As with everything we're moving towards a kind of distributed mesh of systems. I think soon there will be devices that not only pickup GPS, GLONASS (whats left of it) and when it comes, Galileo, but will also have other fall-backs such as databases of cell-phone networks, TV and radio transmitters and other satellites such as TV, net and phone. Hell it could even go as far as using a camera to read the stars, and with a built-in detailed map of the entire earth you'll most likely be able to rely on terrain matching too, and accelerometers for dead reckoning, all this stuff can be used already but a single hand-held device doesn't seem far off. The US is really bitching over nothing with Galileo.

If you call me I will tell you that I don't have a kitchen or any windows and I don't use phones so I don't need a better calling plan, sometimes I will tell you to hang on a minute while I get someone who's interested and then I'll leave the phone off the hook, Im doing the person on the phone a favour because they get a free break from calling people while their call-centre foots the bill.

Creating these areas could involve spraying something or heating something, yes its still a big area to cover/lots of energy to use even with the start of the storm but diverting it at the source seems far more feasable than stopping a full grown storm just before it enters territorial waters?

Unfortunately... in reality this doesn't work as I have spent the whole day finding out. If you have a reasonably new Nokia phone you are shit out of luck because they basically removed any kind of useful functionality in terms of bluetooth.
