After watching a programme last night on a (mockup) terrorist attack on london (about 2000 people died when a chlorine tanker was blown up) i want one of these for stopping chemical attacks! apparently we have 1 air-ambulance for the whole city and a fraction of the police have chemical/biological training and equipment and the tube staff have nothing except some training that said "get everyone out of the nearest exit as fast as you can" wow i think i might become an emergency training consultant, i could make millions!
Its ok we can solve this by arresting the student and banning any software that does this. Just like we solved the Iraqi abuse problem by taking their cameras away, and how we solved the Berg murder by making sure no news outlet would publish or link to the video, and how we solved the terrorists hi-jacking planes and crashing them problem with iris and finger scanning, (so now they can still get on the plane, but when they've crashed it we will know who did it and not to let them on next time). Or maybe its more like how the CD copy-protection system being defeated by the shift-key problem was defeated by threatening the student under the DMCA! or could it be how the drug problem was totally solved by throwing half the population in jail? [insert something about DRM solving everything and letting governments send sensitive documents in full without having to worry about someone reading the bad words] great, so i guess we can bomb for peace and fuck for virginity after all:)
I think it stems mainly from the insanity of your current president. also openly-self-admitted mass terrorism by a previous government with hiroshima and nagasaki to 'scare the japanese into surrender' has caused tension for quite some time. people don't really hate america we just want your president in a nice padded room asap.
I must have been living under a rock because i had no idea the EU wanted to implement US patent laws!? thats like going backwards in time! what are these people on? maybe next the EU should abolish the human rights act? how about taking back the vote from women! no im not trolling, the US patent system is stupid and im sure people in the US will agree. Good for them to vote against it, i just hope the UK does too.
I did this when i was about 14, strapped it onto a crutch and even had an analogue multimeter on the side. Made a nice little cattle prod (inspired by waynes world). I think an evil spider was the only thing to try my patience. Yes most things can be made into a weapon, even bare hands if you have the training. Surely if you just make a separate part of the plane (toilet, bunk etc) for the pilots and ensure the bulky door remains locked at all times then you can be pretty safe. If that means loosing a few square feet of paying seating space and not letting the pilots flirt with the hostess then maybe you gotta make that sacrafice.
UK plugs all have fuses and and are keyed so you can only stick it in one way around (i dont know why thats needed on an AC system but hey) and also the earth pole (which is always there) is a little bit longer so it makes contact before the live poles do. Also most european plugs can fit UK sockets cos the holes are the same space appart. UK plugs rock!
I'll put fifty quid on that bush will actually shred the bill of rights live on tv (sponsored by DC Shedding Solutions Inc.) with-in the next 4 years:P
Probably because law-enforcement agencys know what sort of evidence and situation is required in order to get a wire-tap and so they dont bother asking for one (and filling in lots of forms) when it will obviously be turned down. Now they can say to hell with evidence.
I dont know about fair use rights, but i do know that i have the right to do whatever i want in my own home with something ive legally purchased (apart from obvious things like building nuclear reactors or using a dvd as murder weapon). Now you might argue that this law doesnt exist, but i think you'll find it right next to the law that says "people have common sense freedoms so suck my dick" this is also in the same section of the law that quite clearly states "you are not the only people who can make films so dont act like you're selling something we would die without, infact these days you shouldnt even be acting at all, you suck"
Made me think about what would happen if some idiotic PHB's and marketers thought it would be a good idea to build ATM's with touch-tone - don't be so quick to say it wouldnt happen, and remember that Diebold makes ATM's;)
"Open source software, also described as free software, is the neutron bomb of IP" that will destroy 85% of the market value of US companies and drive companies who are currently outsourcing to "draconian measures even worse than outsourcing."
Yes and good ethics, freedom and better public education and journalism will destroy the ability of companies to get away with cheap 3rd world labour extortion, mass polution and shockingly poor quality products with major defects! This is certainly going to lead to desparate measures by these companies to secure their way of business and will include the bribing of politicians and forcing of unfair trade 'agreements' with other countries and maybe even mass gangster style policing!
"Since the system delivers the message it must know what is trying to do what with what. I'm supposed to blindly OK everything???"
No, but when you go on a 'dodgy' site and your browser asks you "Would you like to allow this site to open 23 new windows?" you can click no. AFAIC users who cant be bothered with basic security and want to drag the rest of the world down to their level can damn well learn to click a dialog box or just not have a say.
Theres no need to turn all these things off, just make them unable to do much to your computer without the browser asking you first. Most people could deal with "This site is trying to access important parts of your system, if you trust this site click OK" and ActiveX could be hardcoded to trust microsoft.com (yes issues there but its better than nothing).
I dunno, on slashdot everyone always says "fix a problem at the bottleneck" - which means you stop something at the source instead of the mass of problems it creates. People who write worms and spyware are assholes but really arnt they just opertunists? Theres really only one source that you can safely attribute to all problems. One company thats produced faulty product after faulty product since the 80's. There may be plenty of burglers but the world's biggest Window manufacturer has fitted faulty locks and frames for years and while... well i cant really think of another real-life example of one company's actions allowing so much crime.
Most other OS's require you to confirm when a program wants to do something dodgy and often make you type your password or root's. Sand-boxing is the most basic security method - we even do it in real life! imagine saying "ok kids, you can play in the garage but dont touch that high-powered buzz-saw or that nail-gun" thats what windows is doing.
Its pretty stupid that we've got to the stage where simple web scripting can have so much control over your browser/computer. It seems that javascript for example was designed with no regard to security, or more likely badly implemented by the likes of Microsoft. The plain and simple fact is your browser should stop bad scripts and/or ask you if you want to allow something, its certainly not rocket science to implement that people come on - were talking "if script wants to open/close a window or go somewhere, ask user first" thats about 3 lines of code that should have been implemented back in IE 3, why wasn't it?
To a certain extent its now appearing, IE will tell you "This website wants to close a window, do you want to allow it?" too little too late. Most other browsers have built-in pop-up blocking but even they took their time. Its basic security-101 that if you're dealing with a script that can be run by anyone you restrict what it can do. Same thing goes for Microsoft Outlook VB scripting. If people implementing these things weren't idiots we would have actually gone through the 90's with out annoying pop-ups and Outlook worms!!!! can you believe that??!? Microsoft is pretty much single-handedly responsible for opening these holes and for nearly a decade no-one has pointed fingers!!! Can i even add any more exclamation points or question marks?!?!?!?! Ok so its not just MS but mostly it is, given their browser share.
Other than web scripting/activeX etc. etc. which could be easily secured, there's real OS level holes, and tricking users into downloading and running things. Again who do we all need to point at? I don't expect every computer user to know that downloading random programs can be bad, but at the very least warn them! or at least run that program with limited permissions automatically unless they override it!
I just cant understand why all this is allowed to happen? someone please explain?
You know what? fuck it, biometrics is stupid. I dont want to live in a world where people go around chopping off fingers and taking out eyes to steal identity and where i have to rely on some badly coded recognition algorithm (probably written by the sort of people who work for Diebold) to keep my data, identity and bank account safe. Why do we need this sort of thing? to stop illigal immigrants getting jobs? bullshit mister blunkett. To stop suicide bombers (who only strike once)? sure! A photo and a competent security guard have worked for years and given that you just dont know who is trying to get a bomb on a plane your just going to have to resort to good old searching. Oh and if you cant remember a pin number so you think biometrics will be easier then your an idiot. The current system works and we all know the saying about trying to fix it.
Given the other stupid ideas the british government has come up with recently *cough* pay-before-you-board busses *cough* i really think they should just stop.
I know its off topic, but what crack-head marketing team keeps coming up with these stupid names?! Connexion??? WTF?! just call it "In-flight Wi-Fi" its not like anyone knows what connexion means but they are much more likely to know what in-flight wi-fi is and less likely to think your product is a pretentious piece of marketing BS. Oh and PS please stop changing fucking company names! "Warner Village" is not VUE! "Fuck-face Incorporated" is not "Punnani (tm)"
Hes been arrested for conspiracy to commit copyright violation (whatever that means) which i guess means "making something that we have decided is only for commiting criminal offences". Why boycott software??

Hmmm i wonder when the linux kernal source code will be stolen? oh yeah! never!

A 3rd year engineering student should really know that. :\ :( :O
That still doesnt explain why its keyed while in other countries you can plug it in either way around!

The memory hole is currently suffering a fate worse than the slashdot effect - the "entire world trying to get that Berg video effect"

Damnit we cant have that can we!?
