Every time this sort of injustice happens it just makes it easier for everyone to justify "stealing" music and generally fucking with the corporations. How on earth do you quantify a charge like that? does that mean gun manufacturers are responsible for conspiracy to commit violence? encryption? cameras? search engines? practically anything can be said to be designed to commit a crime.
I have boycotted buying music since 2000, have you?
Well dur, if there are 1000's of unpatched machines out there they will be spreading worms and getting owned for DDoS attacks. Not to mention the importance of future DRM 'upgrades' having 100% roll-out. But every day more people come one step closer to ditching windows.
"Back in 1945, it took three days between the time U.S. Marines raised the flag on Iwo Jima and the famous picture of the historic moment was published in all the newspapers. In 2004, it took barely an hour before the explosive photos from an Iraqi prison were seen all over the world."
Well actually it took several months for the pictures to get into the hands of either the government or the media (some might say "same thing") and atleast 2 weeks of delaying the final broadcast. The real question that we ask to measure the speed of information in our society is: how long until the Flash parodies appear?
Yes but remember, most people dont know or care what open source is. To them a computer is just an appliance like a car. Laws are easily changed too, and even if you are allowed to reverse engineer, what if the hardware is just designed to stop you (i.e chips will burn out if tampered with) is there anything to say hardware cannot be designed like that? and what about using DRM as a law tool against reverse engineering - eg "oh your honour, they cant reverse engineer this system because the DRM system is part of it and that would be breaking the DMCA"
Looks like instead of PC's getting locked down with mandatory DRM, everyone else will just leave PC's behind and move over to a closed-box tamper-proof "i dial home and make sure your still a subscriber" units that do all the basic things most people need: games, music, video, office applications and printing. These platforms will be more strictly controlled than a totallitarian facist dictatorship, any tampering and the unit will kill its self, and if it doesnt dial in regularly the company will be able to "reclaim" it because you will legally only be renting it. This will be fine to begin with, as if we care? we can stick to our nice 'open' PC's and laugh as everyone else is treated like crap. Unfortunately it will start to fall apart for us. Hardware manufacturers will quit the PC market, closed systems will start locking out compatability, and eventually, unless we can get some hardware on our side we will run out. Could that be a starting point for big brother?
Perhaps they could have put it another more friendly way
"In regards to your recent request for information: Dear sir, Due to recent events it is now routine that persons requesting certain record types are given a short security interview."
instead of "Get your fucking ass down here you terrorist traitor you should thank god we dont send you to concentration camp X-ray right now!"
People getting software for free can be beneficial to software companies. Very expensive CAD, graphics, video effects and 3D software is often downloaded by people who could never afford the 50,000$ price tags so they can learn it. Then when they get jobs they will prefer the software they already know, while the company they work for wont risk using a dodgy copy! Although that trend is starting to change as free/OSS starts to catch up and outperform the commercial products.
Ok so Windows doesnt fit the same hole, and piracy is not the same thing as downloading (piracy involves profit and i hate pirates). But sometimes you gotta just say fuck it, and if there are any one-man-band programmers struggling to feed 10 kids they might want to learn about contraception:P
"In some ways, the biggest problem is Microsoft Windows itself. Windows has holes that can allow a hacker to install almost anything on a computer that lacks a protective program or device called a firewall. Users' vulnerability can be compounded if they have not installed the latest patches from Microsoft."
I read somewhere that criminals and terrorists and child molestors and pirates also communicated on telephones!? Its not like people have the right to freely talk to eachother so lets restrict the telephone system. Maybe only approved people should be allowed phones?
Who cares if Microsoft patented it? The fact is, who-ever allowed there to ever be patents on trees is totally fucked in the head! Now looking at most politicians i dont know if they were just very old and should have retired, ill, insane, corrupt or totally fucked out of their mind on acid. At what level of sanity can you justify patenting a tree? Please someone enlighten me?
Tax for a start - considering all the crap tax gets spent on these days i know allot of people wouldnt mind some of it going into research, and if countries work together and share, then they will be able to cover more and not re-invent the wheel each time. Drug companies would still be allowed to sell the fruits of the researchers labour but anyone could sell it, and maybe they would have to give a certain ammount of profit back to the research.
The fact is that the only way to implement this sort of DRM is through tamper-proof hardware, and even then its not like someone with a camera phone or even a good old small film camera to get a copy of that 'private' email (which is mostly what they are touting its use for). As for music and videos theres the if-i-can-see-it-i-can-copy-it which just cant be stopped, people will tolarate surprisingly low quality. And this isnt rocket science either, most people will be able to defeat these systems, software or hardware. Its not in Microsoft's interest to pursue this unless they want to piss people off or look very stupid when their "virus proof" OS gets hit one week after launch. It was a stupid idea before and it always will be a stupid and hated idea. Im glad they dropped it.
Im sick and tired of hearing the same old bull shit that comes with every virus. Never is Microsoft given any stick over this. Sure the writer is an asshole and a criminal, but that doesnt change the fact that Microsoft Windows is full of holes, and never does this get reported, at the very most some 'expert' will be interviewed on TV and will say 'no it wont attack Macs'.
In a response to Microsofts recommendations, Windows users today recommended that "For that hardware, Longhorn better have an average uptime of 200 years, a no-virus lifetime guarantee and a paper clip with a 180 IQ AI system that can actually tell that you really want to write a letter by reading your mind and can write your 50 page report for you."
Microsoft seems to have a lot of rallying force, why don't they try and get the government to change? Just reading that post, any senator with half a brain would atleast have this under the spot-light in days. Oh sorry, wrong country.
1) they used the crapest cheapest programmers they could find: we're all screwed
2) they used the most expensive but still crap programmers: we're still screwed but now with less money
3) they found some decent programmers: we're ok, but if the middle managers ever find out they spent good hooker money on programmers they'll be pissed!
Oh if browsers all worked even close to web standards i would be so happy. Instead of ripping my hair out and crying when i read about the perfect way to do it that alas cannot be done because no browser supports it. How bloody hard can it be to get a box model right anyway? the same company (MS) that fucked that up also builds mission critical software!
You, your friend who covers, and your wife take a car trip (not far fetched is it?!?) Theres a major pile-up and you all end up dead! What do you do? didnt think of that did you? well its certainly not a tin-foil-hat scenario? You gotta make sure that nothing links you and your cover buddy, you must stay away from him by several miles!
Nah its the new trend in 'streamlining efficient solutions' - you pay the worst and cheapest programmer you can find and aslong as they actually write something that roughly fits the specs you use it. If you find the code is actually a pile of spagetti (spelling?) then you get someone like you to fix it. Just make sure you dont take a look at all their other scripts or you'll faint. Its a big fat accident waiting to happen, but while it works, it saves money.
Just be glad this sort of thing is only done with semi-important systems like banking and voting - you just wait until planes and nuclear reactors get outsourced to the cheapest bidder, then you really will be fighting rabid crack whores! we all will!
The server is still up after slashdot? they must use a beowulf cluster of bukake!

Im surprised math isn't copyright/patentable, since trees obviously are.

You can take my cock from my cold dead hands as i use it to pump my company's stock up?
Oh in that case fuck the little buggers. Now we crack for humanity!

Maybe im wrong but arn't people required to enforce patents by law? maybe im thinking of something else.
Well that could still mean one of 3 things:
1) they used the crapest cheapest programmers they could find: we're all screwed
2) they used the most expensive but still crap programmers: we're still screwed but now with less money
3) they found some decent programmers: we're ok, but if the middle managers ever find out they spent good hooker money on programmers they'll be pissed!
