Remember the phrase 'slow learner'? well if your on the payroll to teach your replacement, and your worried that mis-training them will get you in to trouble, just remember the phrase 'slow teacher'! you could spend a whole year just teaching someone, very very very slowly and extra extra carefully, every single detail of your system until they kill themselves out of bordem. Then you can get started on the next one;)
So let me get this straight, John Ashcroft, whos never even seen a woman penetrating herself with the local prize winning giant cucumber, wants to tie up who knows how many police, fbi agents and judges pursuing a massive 'war' on pornography so that thousends of people can join prisioners from the 'war on drugs' and the 'war on terrorism'? Actually this is a great idea, now the police that would otherwise be busting 12 year-olds for downloading music will be doing something else and im sure the porn industry outside america will be delighted with the news! btw europe is laughing at you guys, you cant even swear on tv!!? you cant even show 1 nipple?!?! land of freedom? dont make me piss myself!
er 50 quid says blair or the eu will follow with their own draconian war on porn within 6 months:(
If apple can build a decent successful desktop based on 'unix then why cant it be done with linux? All you need to remember is that the masses need 3 things:
1. Binaries (or something very very automated) 2. Hardware support (which is why apple rocks) 3. Entertainment (DeCSS, and wine really needs to work perfectly)
well it certainly wouldnt contain enough information to reconstruct the whole print, but maybe (im not sure) you could reconstruct the features that were recorded, but you would get a picture that looked nothing like a finger-print - but then if i said the letter E had a downwards stroke and a horizontal stroke at the bottom, you might be able to reconstruct the letter L and that would still pass the test! so a reconstructed image that didnt look like a finger print might still pass.
A normal one way hash eg md5 is designed so that a small change in the source will produce a large change in the hash, but in any system you use its always going to be possible to take a given hash and generate a source that will produce the same hash, its just a question of proccessing power, and i would guess that the sort of system produced by companies contracted by the government would be much poorer than average (diebold prooves my point) so you just better make sure your finger-print data stays secure. Biometrics really isnt the holy grail of anything.
Id much rather people had the freedom to write software like this than we all sit around and play along with DRM because its the law. To me DRM represents one of those stupid javascripts people employ on websites to stop you 'right-clicking', now imagine if by-passing that was illigal!
Didnt the Bush administration do this back in 2000? i think it was called 'vote shaving', its a pity bush didnt get shaved. (im sorry i just couldnt help myself).
slightly off-topic rant but since i did some upgrading i havnt been able to got my (ati all-in-wonder very old pro) tv card to work dual screen so i just took it out, my computer doesnt have a dvd drive so i use my PS2 as a dvd player connected up to the tv-card, but now i cant! so off i go to the tv (which is also very old) and find it only has RF-in, no problem, connect the PS2 to video-machine to TV to watch a DVD and hey ho, fucking macrovision kicks in, what am i supposed to do? now im not making this up why would i? i love bit-torrent as much as anyone else, but why the fuck should i suffer and not be able to use the stated features of something ive paid for when it did not say clearly on the box "WILL NOT PLAY DVDs UNLESS CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO YOUR TV" and it obviously does not adhere to any video specifications, as far as im concerned video equipment that uses macrovision is _not_ standard and should either carry a very clear warning or should not be able to even have composite/scart/s-video connectors on it! anything else is mis-representation and a lie to the consumer - i think most people would choose non-cripled hardware if given an educated choice.
btw clear warning doesnt mean pt.6 font next to "all rights reserved"
Can someone actually explain why we use the unix file structure still? (ignoring backwards compatability and any stupid hardcoding) sure its nice having libraries and docs in various organised places, but surely theres a better structure that makes more sense for everyone and could still be technically superior? or maybe im wrong and unix filestructure is just so good i dont fully understand its hidden clockwork beauty yet?
Is backup not a legitimate use? Ok so cutting the bullshit, we all know what backup means but theres no way they can do anything to get rid of mod-chips simply because the chip itself is just an off-the-shelf blank PIC (usually) which is un-bannable and the code for it ammounts to about 1kb. Trying to stop that would be like trying to remove all references to goats.cx from the world.
lol i don't think they use md5! its more like a specialised code that picks out certain features and generates more of a geek-code style hash, to get a match you have to have a certain number of similarities, if theres a smudge or you cut your finger it would still be able to make a match. What happens if you have no fingers or you have an accident and have to wear a plaster? Ofcourse all this means jack shit since someone important enough to be a known terrorist will just send someone else to do their bidding - someone who has never been to the US! I just wonder if the crack smoking idiots who came up with this actually have another hidden agenda or if they are just really really dumb.
I think this is electronic fingerprinting where your print generates some sort of hash code. if you want to compare it with a print you compare the codes for a match but you cant recreate an image of a fingerprint from a hash code. But theres probably nothing to stop them recording an image of your actual print - but there really should be some sort of law against that because it creates the privacy issue you say.
If i get to go to heathrow and watch american tourists being finger-printed and ass-searched aswell then im totally for this! dont really need to go to the us anyway.
imagine everyone walks around with a little camera/mic clipped to their shirt as common as having a phone in your pocket, disputes would always be on video, ufos would never be missed and blackmail would be plentiful, its gonna get partially like that like it or not, camera phones keep getting more popular and their memory is getting larger and larger, even if you dont have them always on in a couple of years almost everyone will have a camera within reach 24/7. Privacy issues are gonna go mental super-hardcore!
This is whats wrong with the world today, while the US government has made absolutely sure that where-ever you are in the world, and whatever citizenship you hold, you can be arrested without trial and taken to their camp, but companies can do whatever the hell they want - problems in one country? just move your 'location' to another country - that usually just means changing a few documents, dodgy business practices? dont worry, your legal entity is separate from your company. Fines are money so ofcourse they are going to be treated as just another cost! you have to make real consiquences for a company that breaks the law, fuck les'afairs.
Sounds like a good service that actually gives you a service! The main problem with online music stores though is that while the p2p networks have everything stores usually only have music from a few labels that have authorised it, competing with a free system where you can get absolutely anything inst going to work unless you atleast offer something like this - music in the format you want at the bitrate you want and guarenteed to be a good file, ofcourse most people dont care about format, bitrate or 'rip quality.
Great, but now can we _please_ have a unix port!?

We have the data protection act, you dont.
