To slashdot editors: please script slashdot so that the phrase "Digital Rights Management" is replaced by "Digital Restrictions Management" in all occurences. Lets deface every fucking corporate site that has these words and change them! (don't forget to correct anyone if they mistakenly call it Rights)
Earlier this month, it was reported that a man convicted of murdering a special needs teacher by strangulation has been a regular visitor to pornographic Web sites that included images of necrophilia.
I remember this on the news (afew weeks ago) and this is the only reason he's decided to have this crack smoking session.
erm i mean crack down on these sites. Its a total media stunt to better his career in the eyes of the idiots who make up a large number of people in this country.
Hynds' statement may also anger those who believe that one of the Web's great strengths is that it accommodates such a wide range of interests, free from censorship.
Damn right it does, hopefully this is the last we will hear about it - once the media attention has gone why would he bother? But really, screw you Len Hynds you have no idea what the internet is and you shouldnt have your job.
...considering they could have solved the entire vb-script email/word attachment hole in millions of machines around the world just by turning one thing of by default over 5 years ago! Instead we hear about whole mail servers brought down for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
PIC processors can be insanely useful for this sort of thing and very cheap (most around $10) and easy to get, and once you've got the basics down (which can seem a bit daunting at first) they are very easy to learn and program to do pretty much whatever you want. The playstation mod chips are cheap miniture 8-pin PICs usually - just to give you an idea of what they can do, and some of the more advanced models have RS232 (i think) builtin so you can directly interface it with your PC. Add to that some cheap easy to use wireless modules (they just take a power supply and you stick the on/off binary signal in and thats all you need, takes 2 minutes) you can do some nifty remote controlled things. Basically anything from just switching something on and off or blinking some leds (which can be programmed in minutes) to full fledged computing can be done with these babys. They have loads of extras too - analog-digital converters, eeprom memory, high-current switching and more.
This makes 1984 look like a holiday camp - freedom of speech, freedom of press, and thats just the tip of the iceburg. I dont know the full story but imagine the police/fbi resources dedicated to this one case while hundereds of real crimes go ignored. And yes as far as im concerned, any crime involving a stupidly unsecure IIS server being defaced is far lower priority than even a $5 mugging. Considering what the FBI said i have no reason to believe the crime was anything more than that.
I really dont understand how the FBI can treat every computer system they confiscate as safe to pick-up and stick in the back of a van. Either that or i dont understand how anyone with data thats either criminal or very confidention hasnt caught on to the fact that they could erase it before its even loaded into the van! take a few machines (or remote backup if needed) and stick them on a UPS. The vital data is then loaded into RAM along with the 'loading/unloading' program and removed from the drive, only a correct procedure will restore it back to disk. In come the FBI and shut it down, oops they just lost all the evidence they were looking for including the program that was responsible for loading and unloading the data into memory - absolutely no evidence left, no trace, nothing to say you even damaged evidence - an offence in itself.
RSA promises that this new technology will not interfere with the normal operation of RFID systems or allow hackers to use security technology to bypass theft-control systems
Are you on crack!??! you put whatever you want in the bag and walk out the door, how is that not allowing people to bypass theft-control systems (theives not hackers). Im sure this has been posted 100 times below but i just had to post again without RTFA or the posts.
Now available at my website, genuine licenses permitting you to suck my cock. that is 'necessary for you to get down on your knees and suck it'. And they take VISA. Im saying that any blowjob that is similar to a 'Hardcore Sluts(tm) Vol. 5' blowjob counts as my IP! Only license holders or my girlfriend may perform fellatio under international law.
Thats strange because the other day i was driving my car (which has power-only stearing and brakes) when all of a sudden the power went out, i couldnt stear or break or even change down a gear (fully electronic gear selection) so i tried to bail but i couldnt even open the door - you guessed it electronic locks. Well it wouldnt have mattered if the power was on anyway because the locks automatically stop you opening the door while the car is moving. And anyway i couldnt see the approaching train track because the electronically tinted windows are designed to go black when the power is off (so you cant look inside the car). So the car rolled to a stop and i heard the horn that could only mean one thing...
I dont want to sound like a troll but that company reeks of what i like to call "Digital Crap". Taking a look at their front page they have a "Queens Award for Enterprise and Innovation" which means about as jack as a MCSE, and i think this passage sums up what they are about:
Digital Risk Management resolves the complexity associated with implementing digital solutions and measuring their performance through Service Level Management. It includes selecting the optimum technology set, managing external partners and alliances, linking payments to targets, defining rigorous quality control procedures, managing system availability, achieving the expected return on investment, and bringing about changes in corporate culture required for successful business.
Im not saying they took figures out of the air im just speculating on the sort marketing speak company they are.
Ok so correct me if im wrong: We have limited, inconclusive or countering evidence about the way EMFs affect our health and we cant even predict how waves will react inside the fuselage of an airplane or with the equipment with enough confidence to make using things like shavers and phones legal. It probably happens that allot of frequencies of waves are OK, but certain frequencies or ranges are not (well we know this for sure because we know that microwaves at a certain frequency and strength will cook you and that x-rays, gamma-rays and a whole host of others are whats the word... not-good). If you plotted a function of frequency and 'harmfulness' you would probably get a pretty wild looking graph, then add wave interaction with other objects, defraction/usion, harmonics, the direction of the wind etc and you have total confusion - even if a wave is safe at one frequency and strength what if it enters your skull from a certain angle and bounces around inside and somehow creates something bad. Correct me if im talking total crap i didnt exactly pass physics with flying colours.
On behalf of my country i just want to say sorry. Theres no story here, its a crap gimick with barely any use except as padding for some morning tv shows to talk about. Im not sure who is responsible for this, but be assured, the offices of Telewest are being raided under the Stupid Ideas Act (the US version was very successful in the prosecution of the CueCat people) and you wont have to worry about marketing hype like this anymore.
Skywalker wine - the only wine that will have more unopened bottles in star-trek collections than will have been drunk. Maybe luke's down on cash and hes trying to milk the fans for anything he can sell.. Hm speaking of milk, maybe he could...
why is this modded funny? its not funny i was serious, Microsoft are pig-fucking shit munchers if they think they can screw up and leak the only thing obscuring their security and then tell me that im not allowed to even search for it. Mod parent down!
Well personally i find it pretty shitty that some corporation thinks it has the right to tell me what i can and cannot 'search' for. Microsoft, go fuck yourselves, you let the code out, its in the open, you cant make that go-away.
For some reason the thought of people being forced to appear in commercials or face financial consequences reminds me of the geniva convention regarding prisioner of war humiliation.
Check again in the latest version (1.1.0), you'll find the data import in "Insert"->"External Data", it has many options/formats including comma/tab/whatever separated and can take data from a url not just a local file. Also do a search for RSQ in relation to regression (have a look at the see-also results on that too) im not sure if that helps or not? check out this plug-in aswell.
Well technically this kind of abstraction of style from content is pretty standard, Open office will do the same thing although it doesnt really have any automatic detection of what various things should be. CSS and HTML is another example of separating the two. I agree, sometimes you want to shoot people who have decided their report would look nicer if it was in a curly colourful font (yellow on white mmm) I think the problem inherent here is that most people dont know how to use the most basic functions of a wordprocessor or any other program for that matter. It would be nice for openoffice to have some automatic fool-proofing.
Im with you on that, the anti-trust suits are on the wrong case - they should be doing something about the way Microsoft bullies PC companies into bundling Windows and only Windows or else and someone should also be making sure Microsoft cant FUD and spin its poor security record - every time i read about a "new worm" in the general media never read "the worm takes advantage of security holes some describe as 'blaitent and incompetent' that Microsoft has admitted knowing about for some time and failed to fix"
Gamers these days want a comfy chair and allot of hours infront of the game, more hours than your store is open. Build a MMORPG, set a monthly subscription and see it make lots and lots of profit. (If you want abit more on the side you can create some special objects or characters and sell them on eBay, it only takes afew lines of code)
Can someone actually give me a feature for feature list of things the OpenOffice lacks compared to MS Office? Im sure there are many advanced things but what are they? For most areas tho - certainly the home, I cant possibly think of a reason to use MS Office. My uni has MS Office on all the Windows machines in the campus and i cant for the life of me think why, considering the only thing its used for is students writing reports and presentations, unless they got a special, and i mean really special deal on it, it seems like a waste of money, they could have bought some useful equipment or maybe enough bloody BNC connectors;)

Remote key-loggers anyone?
The PIC makers
More stuff

Looks at his copy of OpenOffice...
Exel Solver: OpenOffice Goal Seek (we have matlab already)
PowerPoint Pack-n-Go: OpenOffice export including Flash export.
Clippy: OpenOffice help (without stupid paper clip)
Hows that?
