The last two models of Dell Laptops we bought absolutely sucked for Ubuntu Linux installs. They weren't the ones sold with Ubuntu installed (that's still limited to certain models and only to certain classes of buyers) and my techies have had all sorts of problems with video chip compatibility apparently. We've probably bought a dozen models of laptop - including Dell's - in the last five years and they've all Linuxed up nicely, give or take the odd little problem with wireless or sound. But these new Dells are being SOB's just to get installed.
I thought these days were long gone, when you checked www.linuxlaptops.org for compatibility before buying... Oh well, it gives the Ubuntu forums something to do, and now more people are using Linux on laptops there's a lot more help getting on there.
All old (non-diesel) cars had engine immobilizers. You popped the top off the distributor cap and took the rotor arm out. How many joy riders carried a selection of spare parts with them? Ah, the joy of analogue tech.
So, do they have enough compute power to simulate the flap of every butterfly's wings now? And does it include the heat it produces from its cooling systems in its climate models?
They're going to aren't they? Windows Vista '09 Multicore Edition, only valid for up to 16 cores, Windows Vista '09 Multicore Extreme Edition, 16-24 cores...
Do people still use browser bookmarks? I can't remember the last time I bookmarked something. I just google it. Or I start typing the URL in and Firefox completes it for me from my history. Or I remember where I saw a link to it.
Just about the only bookmarks I have are a set of tab bookmarks that I fire up when I start my browser so I get slashdot, gmail, our helpdesk and a couple of other things come up. Yeah, that needs an embedded SQL database...
Oh well, I'm sure some people will find it useful....
I never got blisters from my Atari VCS joystick (if you want to know what they look like, Slashdot uses them for the icon at the top of this thread), but I did get a red patch at the base of my thumb from use.
The great thing about the joysticks is that they were so robust. I used to play Track n Field on mine, and that involved going L-R-L-R-L-R as fast as possible. Technique was to hold the base in your left hand and then use finger and thumb of right hand to whack the stick L-R speedily. I doubt any modern console controller would stand that kind of hammering.
And the one button thing? Yeah, its clearly not enough for today, but back then it kept the gameplay simple. Nowadays they have what, eight buttons and two joysticks? Meh.
So basically you want to run the apps on the remote machine and just use the local machine for display and storage. Hmmmm. Sounds familiar. Sounds like X11 or Remote Desktop doesn't it?
The only reason for the 'do it in the browser' meme seems to be set up for web this and web that and aren't set up for giving you Windows TS or Unix Shell accounts....
Oh, and X11 isn't that efficient over a network of course!
Quite literally. Laptop screens aren't designed to be touched, let alone scraped and prodded all over with a stylus. Or does this thing come with a plexiglass overlay?
A: Who is the Chinese President? C: Yes. A: Who? C: I told you. A: When? C: Wen is the Premier. A: When is the Premier what? C: The Premier of China. A: Who is the Premier? C: No, Hu is the President! A: That's what I wanna know!
Our recently refurbed admin building ("Hey! When are we plebs going to get our leaky windows replaced??") had its grand opening the other day, complete with University bigwigs and minor royalty. The day before it seems someone decided to upgrade the security system firmware.
When they did this, there was nobody inside. And they locked themselves out. They figured if they set the fire alarm off then the override would fling the doors open. But it didn't. They had to get someone in to smash through the security door to a) get inside and b) stop the fire alarm.
I imagine all the mess was cleaned up before the princess arrived.

I'll give model numbers if anyone cares..
Heh. This is starting to sound like a subject for a future xkcd cartoon :)

If only they released it on CD-RW, that number could go down. Or up, more likely.

How well do the compression algorithms compress the other compression algorithms files? :)
