  1. Phobia of the Opensource model on Introducing Open Source to the Doctors · · Score: 2

Medical technologies are one of those areas that I think should be open-sourced for obvious reasons. The notion of bugs and flaws that no one can get at in medical technology gives me the willies. As well, if by applying the "thousands of eyes" we can save lives, I think that's good for all.

I would agree full heartidly, but most of the general public I have talked with about this, and many papers I have read, have the idea that the opensource model is "peicemeal" and that with code from many different coders you some organization, security, and stability. I fear that unless the public is far better educated about opensource, and more popular things come from opensource, that these fears will keep opensource from entering such a sensitive field as the medical field.

Hmm... after reading this article, this one came to mind. It tells of microrobots that are to be used to repair power plants, anyone else see the possibilities? If people would give nano technology the attention it deserves ;) and get a few buckets full of nanobots on the rotating wheel of lids for the fusion generator, it would be nearly maintenence free (by humans) and pretty cost efficient!

    Go nanotechnology!

Selling tapes is illegal... and selling mp3's isn't? I am sure their is a legal reason behind this, but I would love to see a jam band offer mp3's of their shows for free.

  7. nearly impossible to censor on Internet Metadata - Open Collaborative Rating · · Score: 2

    What exactly defines the web?

    RFC2616?
Make a little daemon that sits on port 80 and browsers work with, but doesn't fully comply with the RFC.

    Anything on port 80?
    Change the port.

    Anything that uses HTML?
What about Flash, java and other things of the sort? Or use a cgi script to insert the contents of a normal text file in a page... the illegal content would not in HTML by nature, just inserted in it because of the viewer.

The most feasable solution is client side filtering and this is also riddled with holes. What defines a client? If you telnet to a site and read it would it be illegal? Would there have to a commitee to decide exactly what you are allowed to use as a web browser? It would either fail pitifully or turn big brother.

If all else fails, make a new protocal that is cosmetically the same but functions differently.

In short: it's near impossible to do and legal battle after legal battle would have to be fought over it wasting more money than it would ever be worth.

  8. More news on Sun to come. on Sun to release Solaris source code · · Score: 1

This is great news but I find it hard to believe. They can't just be abandoning their opportunity to make money on Solaris. Big companies never really want to go opensource, they only care about the bottom line, not morals. Open source and linux are buzzwords, I am very suspicious of big companies supporting open source/linux. Example: Corel trying to avoid open source untill they were flooded with email from angry open source fans.

In my gcrystalball I forsee a story on slashdot in the near future of Sun in some way attempting to exploit the open source community.

In all seriousness I work for a school doing networking and we are trying desperately to get away from novell and centralization... it is much more of a hasell than it ever was worth in our opinion. They are also moving from a T1 to a cable modem for each classroom... also centralization... anything centralized on the internet tends to not work well... example: NSI

MS drops support, Tru64 is the only solution other than going with Linux, which I love but many people still won't admit that it is a real, robust, stable, OS. For them to drop Tru64 would just be shooting themselves in the foot. Why would a company buy into the server market, then essentially just walk out of it.

Either it is a rumor or they need some serious strategic help.

As I said, they may use cut-throat tactics, but that is not illegal. If you want a computer that doesn't run windows, you can buy a mac, and now you can buy a computer with linux(and it doesn't even have to be a server). There are several alternatives to MS, just no one wants to use them. That is not MS's fault. Who own's netscape? AOL. Is AOL alive and well? very much so... therefor is netscape alive and well? yup.

I hate Microsoft, but the consumer has alternatives offered to them, and all of those alternatives can do just as much as a MS product can do, peoples just don't want to change. The average consumer -likes- windows and doesn't want something different, MS should not be sued for that.

They do not have a monopoly, they just have a succesful company. Take many European contries for example, in holland windows is $300, due to that schools and most home users use Linux. A monopoly is when you can hike the prices and people -must- pay, like the oil monopoly once had.

Business is a mean, cruel, heartless world that MS has just done very well in.
