    Just make your city super-unfriendly to auto traffic (or super dense like NYC), and watch the suburban rails run!

    Between LIRR, Metro North and NJTransit, NYC's suburbs (as far north as Columbia County, about 100mi or more) are quite well served by mass transit, and people actually pay to park at the train stations!

    Still AFAICR the suburban rails are running subsidized by tolls, but what isn't in NYC? And too bad Acela between Philly and NYC is $100 round trip, that must be one helluva monthly pass, though it might almost make sense if you wanted to live in a nice loft in central philly at $8-12/ft and commute to NYC..

    I just find it amazing that more fly-by-wire fine-tuning by expert test pilots wasn't done before handing it off to "grunts" first. The fatalities caused by osprey crashes AFAICR were chalked up to pilot error, and complexity of handling should be negated by fly-by-wire..

    Wow, you can lug your whole computer rig on an airplane? Where do you find the AC plugs? ;)

    OTOH, with my TiG4 + extra batteries, I can fly coast to coast without having to watch "You've got mail" or whatever drek is being shoveled out over the airline miniscreens...

    Last trip was given to the Mr. Show and Criterion Beastie Boys DVD sets.. (and widescreen discs are even nicer on the wide Ti..)

    To me, this article is like saying "Divx not supported on macs" - it will be met with a resounding chorus of "so what?"

    DivX is available for OSX now, at least in 5.0alpha3 form. It does work, though I find my ffmpegX results are a little iffy (sound sync is a problem)..

    (No, not that Divx. The original one. Who was the jackass that thought it would be a good idea to name a codec after the Circuit City fiasco, anyway?)

    I tend to prefer god games, sims, and modded FPSs. I also like to play online over broadband on occasion.

    I don't want to pay anything to play online, unless the game is free.

    Platforms have historically been limited in their depth of gameplay when it comes to sims and god games, but I'm getting more and more tempted.. Still, how do you build your own levels on a console, share them with friends, put your own skins on your own characters, etc?

    You could try running your foxpro jun^H^H^Hstuff on Linux using Recital's Linux environment... Kinda pricy @ $2500 for 10 runtime users, but it may be worth it to save on M$ licenses, management issues, etc...

    • run multiple desktops in X + your favorite WM
    • bind the 'switch desktop' to alt-f1 or something
    • just switch between desktops


    typically I'll have a desktop devoted to terminals, one devoted to work browsing + email, and one for goofoff.. Or at least I did when I was on salary. Now I have a TiG4 that does everything, though I need to find a multiple-desktop for Aqua..

    Chimera is pretty darn nice, I have to admit: along with Apple Mail it substitutes for Mozilla quite nicely!

    I even tweaked Chimera's NIBs to 'textured' to get the snazzy brushed metal look.. (need the IB from Jul/Aug 2002 ProjectBuilder to do that...)

    Not sure if it's supported in OS X, but it is in linux...

    And I'm sure there's a serial/usb converter that works, even if it's din-8 (as Apples were)..

    BTW, anyone try consoling into a modern SPARC with USB ports, or are they only for peripherals?

    ... but how about porting your AD environment to Samba + LDAP on a unix-based Samba PDC?

    Save lots of $$$ on server licenses, and Win2k works fine in NT4 backwards-compatibility mode..

    Depends on how many people, departments, etc.. But it could be a cost-effective solution.

    As long as M$ isn't paying your college off, of course ;)

    ... notice that you can't use one in the states. It's the only fone in that lineup worth half a damn (since it's the only one with bluetooth) and it's not triband.

    Spose my T68 will be fine for a little while longer :)

    Also, why d(oes|id)n't the ISP simply provide a locked cable modem? If netrek servers could successfully lock out borg clients in 1990, borg/hack'd cable modems should be blockable...

    ps: to compile openssl on osx: get the source, rename /usr/lib/libssl.0.9.dylib and /usr/lib/libcrypto.0.9.dylib to something else, build the openssl-engine tarball, install, compile dclient with -L/usr/local/ssl, rename system libraries back.

    in the CC line in makefile, you may wanna append (from tivocommunity):


    -mdynamic-no-pic -mcpu=XXX -mmultiple -faltivec


    where XXX is your PPC type (750, 7400, 7450 most likely) and -faltivec if your system is a G4.. Dunno how much this should help or hurt, but it could be handy..
