For all of the hype and drama surrounding the ipad and Kindle, there's been a pretty big missed market.
I would pay a _lot_ of money for a 8.5x11" screen that had enough resolution to behave like my old gridded engineering paper. I can't back up engineering paper, and I can't take it around with me easily. I go through about ~1000 sheets/year, and have several boxes of notes I'd love to have with me. In university, a decade ago, I'd take notes and scan them after - that worked, ok. Enough of a pain I don't do it anymore.
Tried the Newton back then, and the Palm too. The resolution resulted in doodles that looked like do-do, not drawings.
It amazed me though - all of my technical documentation is standard A4 PDF's, why don't we have a standard A4 device I can write on a decade later? That's all it has to do!
I'm not sure what type of racing you're talking about, but I sprint race vintage FC2000 class formula cars - 15 laps under race conditions is the single most mentally challenging and focused activity I can possibly imagine. You get a chance to let your muscles rest and check your instruments on straights for a couple seconds a lap.
Even a momentary brain fade trying to apex turns and set up a pass means you are backwards or upside down.
Programming is different, I almost always listen to music if I'm writing code or debugging.
The fact a major, respected, industry leader has predicted an upstart new technology will not surpass the incumbent technology is an indication it is almost certainly false.
It's more important MS had another release
on
A Tale of Two Windows 7s
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
If Windows 7 is any good or not is really a moot point. Every new, additional release of windows, and every new API they introduce dilutes the Windows XP/IE monoculture that was stopping the acceptance of alternative OSes. Microsoft is unlikely to ever regain the position of dominance they had on 2000-01, so it's only a matter of time.
Fast food's dangers are overblown, the propensity to overeat is not.
Various times in my life I basically live off McDonalds, Wendys, and coffee, and beer for weeks at a time. I'm too lazy to manage groceries while working 12-14 hours a day, and when I come home, I want to sleep.
I'm not fat. If anything I am skinny. (165-170lb, 6'2). My cardio is good. My blood chemistry is fine. I get a extensive medical every two years. No problems.
Fast food is cheap and tasty.. just don't eat too much.
As far as agricultural subsidies go, you need to make it worthwhile for farmers to produce crops for national security reasons. It's a real bad idea to let the markets run those things, and this is a view widely accepted by economists. YMMV.
Palm has gone the way of all cool tech companies that get taken over by suits and forget their markets. Instead of spending the time to invest in a next-generation handheld - the palm V, in ~2000, and figure this out then they did more of the same, and released bigger, power sucking devices that forgot the real utility needed.
I owned a USR Palm, a Palm Pro, a Palm III, a m500, a m505, and a Tungsten. I loved their early API. Now.. why bother?
The Pre has no chance. If they cared about their shareholders, they would sell the company and refund the money with a "Sorry for being stupid" letter.
Apple has provided a unified platform, a brilliant storefront, and hardware people are willing to pay a premium for - providing them the margin they need to stay ahead of the game.
..I also can't help but wonder aloud about the properties of cold working aluminum sometimes, especially on long flights, watching the wings flex.. and flex..:)
Worrying about the energy waste from wall warts and PC's is like being concerned about the drip in your ceiling while there is a dam break upstream. Home heating and transportation energy use is twice the magnitude of consumption (1kW vs. 4-500kW or more) and a very small reduction there is a much better idea.
The convenience of wireless charging outweighs the (trivial) energy losses is most applications.
I noticed a few months ago, I don't watch TV anymore. I'll buy DVDs and sit down and watch them, but there is too much interesting stuff going on now, and too many other things to do to sit there on the couch. Most of the programs are utterly asinine, and the good nuggets are all available through other media (DVD) now.
The most interesting thing is this is something that just sort of happened.. not something I set out to do. I think my cat might spend more time in front of the TV than I do.
And we've never had better access to illegal drugs!
Nothing will get any better until things get loony. I hope to see house confiscations, children removed from families, people put in jail.
We're already _almost_ there.
This will foster the development of better anonymous networks and the adoption of proper encryption techniques to defend against these crazy laws.
Just like consuming illegal drugs, nobody is going to stop copying things that don't exist.

Film at 11.
Your assessment of utility might change at some point in the future. @$5/gal, $6/gal..
..or roving bands of cannibal gangs. The next twenty years are going to be a fun time to be alive.
You can get high resolution data for free through GeoBase in Canada. Your tax dollars at work..

Unionized government employees...
Mod parent up. It really is that simple. Energy out must be less than energy in and you lose weight.
My theory is most people have either (a) no idea how much energy they actually consume, and/or (b) have no idea how much energy they actually expend.
Not sure if this place has changed over the years, but I'm all for encryption becoming the norm.
For legitimate law enforcement needs, search warrants and traffic analysis are not impeded.
In fact, draconian enforcement of copyright would be the best thing ever - it would illustrate the absurdity of the status quo.

Two words: Compound interest.
..depends if it's a Utah 'date', or a Las Vegas 'date', now, doesn't it?
The power draw @ 0.10/kWh is not worth worrying about, despite what the green hippies tell you.
Make some improvements to your home's insulation instead, if you are worried about reducing your energy footprint.
In the meantime, organize cables how convenient. I have a powered USB hub on a desk I use for charging stuff. I don't unplug it either.

Palm's advantage is what, exactly?

Depends if you recorded them in HD or not. :-)

Some madman going down the grimselpass with what I assume to be inline skate wheels attached.
..at least he's got a spine protector.

Back your shit up, hide a safe, be inconspicuous and have good insurance. It's cheaper than going nuts with the security.
