Do you know anything about writing drivers? I'm not being a smart ass, I'm just wondering how long it takes to write a driver. Ya know, "Time = $$" sort of thing. Like, HOW MANY video cards would they have to sell before they broke even on the labor.
To tell you the truth, I'm a little scared of this. I mean these government guys have shown to me again and again that they really like their power and the $$ benefits for themselves (salary for life even after one term?) and for their friends and business partners. To keep it, they will push, destroy, lie about and even kill anyone who gets in the way. Yes, even start a war! These mofos are fucking insane!!!!
There used to be a piece of paper called The Bill of Rights that used to make me feel safe from them, but no more. They tell us that they have the right to detain anyone indefinitely without telling anyone or charging anyone. And if we question them, well, we're for the terrorists. What a bunch of boloney, man.
Just think, just because you said "Revolution", even though you posted as an Anonymous Coward, Dubya probably already has your IP address from CmdrTaco and well, I wouldn't be surpised if they kill you and accuse you of being a terrorist. Maybe this will be one of those "missing person" cases, or unsolved murders. Who knows? It's been nice talking to you.
Sorry for the mini-rant, but it was such a good post...
Well, your post seems to me like such a good post that I want to add some of my ramblings to it.
A much deeper freedom is one in which we are not slaves to our thoughts and emotions. Say someone called me a "spic." I know many Hispanics who would automatically react with violence if you were to say that to their face. Even if they're rich and can fly around the world at a moment's notice, I say they're not truly free, certainly not as free as I who can't walk and has to save up to go anywhere, but don't really care what names you call me.
I read the news frequently and am dismayed at all the violence that goes on everywhere. So much shit happens because people don't know how to deal with their anger and other emotions and thoughts. Notice I didn't say "can't control their anger..." because emotions are indeed powerful and if we try to control them, well, I think they're going to bite back hard and create neuroses in us..
Or look at all the cases of depression in this country... I just talked to a friend yesterday who I hadn't seen in a while. He looked nice and smiley. He told me that after X number of years of taking anti-depressants, he decided to just stop taking them cold turkey and he said he hasn't felt like taking them, either and has felt great for a while. My buddy decided that whatever was "causing" the depression in him just wasn't going to do it anymore. THAT is Freedom.
Every credible soure I have read have praised the thoughts behind his donations...
Dude, it's just his PR people doing their job. I'll bet you as soon as he donates money, they call or write every news source in the world. They're probably right now trying to figure out where Gates should donate to get the most bang for his bucks.
People still tend to want to believe anything they read...
People are generally stupid and need to be told what to like, think, say, and believe. Take for example Christianity: How did the average Christian become that? I believe the average one did not say, "Hmmm, I think I will pick a religion based upon what I think makes the most sense."
That being so, I don't think the average person CAN "learn to do their own fact checking and not accept anything as fact until fact checking confirms information" because they are too effing stupid.
Dear Slashdotters,
You can ignore me or laugh at me or whatever you want but I think I must share something I read few years ago.
I don't remember in which of his books I read this but J Krishnamurti said that he was convinced that 1. living your life in a pattern leads to brain cell degradation and 2. meditation can lead to brain cell regeneration.
Anyway, ya all gotta make the decision whether to pursue this line of thought or not.
And it really makes me think Intel is on its way out if they can't compete anymore on the merits of their products, but have to conspire with other businesses to exclude competition.
Hey, that business model has worked for Microsoft quite nicely, and they're still around.
I find your nick and your/. ID number cool as shit.
And your post insightful, interesting, funny, and, so far (it's a 4) underrated... and mocking of those with lesser intellect.
I searched in your post for the word irrational, didn't find it, but then I noticed "the legal system is... no longer subject to rules of decency and logic" so it is there! Aha.
Hey, you're smart. Or at least you can sound that way.
Senator Ed's head swells more and turns a darker red...
Sen Kennedy: Aaaaargh!!!!!
RIAA: Our apologies, sir. Here's something for your political campaign next year. Sorry again.
Sen Kennedy: Why thank you. No problem. Say when are you going to toss me that draft for that new law to stop all these thieves of your intellectual property?
Why would users pay money for an upgrade if there aren't new features? MS answer was to shove more, unnecessary features into the product or repackage existing features in a way that could be sold as a "new" feature.
Hey, hey. MS has approx $40 billion in the bank. You come up with your own scheme to get sheep to give you their money!
... don't you think they will be even more enthusiastic to assist those from the NSA, FBI, or...
Interesting. You mean maybe Microsoft (easy target but it could apply to Cisco or Google) could put holes in Windows so that Uncle Sam can spy/take over a person's computer, perhaps in exchange for granting monopoly status and exclusive contracts that violate law by specifying a company's products instead of open bids based on standards?
This could lead to massive reform in the patent arena.
Nuh, not as long as they pay their Republican party fees.
good job! no, really, I mean it.

They could lose every Linux customer they have, and it would probably not adversely affect thier bottom line too much.
BUT... if all of their Linux cutomer losses went to the competition...!
Too bad we will never work together as much.
One Word: Revolution

I'm starting to worry that America died on 9/11. America's bravery sure died, and the America I used to know died.
Me too. And it wasn't bin Laden that killed it. It was George W. Bush.

I believe my hatred for the DMCA falls just under my hatred for the Patriot Act.
Just wondering... where is The Fed in your list?
Google.
Maybe next year we'll see Internet Explorer CDs at Best Buy for $39.99
ha ha ha

Companies keep business by keeping their customers happy and there are limits to the effectiveness of spin control and FUD.
Microsoft has proven you wrong, buddy.

Want more proof? President Bush.
Flamebait anyone?
Microsoft has to have something pritty damn good to make me want to switch my habits.
Yes, it's called an updated C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file:
64.215.169.95 google.com
How would you treat your Certified Partner if they treated you worse than your enemies?
But seriously MSFT execs just don't fucking get it.
Dude, but they do effing get it! Gates is the richest man in the world. He may be an unethical, asshole, business bitch, but he's not stupid.

Another Krishnamurti said this about throught versus Alzheimer's: http://www.thehumanclub.com/Library/Wisdom/Krishn
Good luck.

Kind of makes you wonder why anyone bothers to vote for the GOP anymore.
Remember, it's not who votes that counts, but who counts the votes!

Hey... I thought I told you to stop it! :)
You must be psychic. You have copied my post that I was about to make... verbatim.
Stop it!
Sometimes you don't ever get to do what you love, but you still have to make a living.
I get to read Slashdot at work! and get paid for it!!
I love this country!!! (but I hate effing Nazi pOS Bush)

Hmmm. I'll have to think about that for a while.
