  1. Mayer's failure actually WASN'T a failure... on Marissa Mayer Will Make $186 Million on Yahoo's Sale To Verizon (cnbc.com) · · Score: 5, Interesting

The implication of this article is that Mayer made out like a bandit while doing a bad job. But the numbers say that she didn't do a bad job. That surprised me, because my perception was the opposite, but the last time this came up, I did the numbers here.

Under Mayer's tenure, Yahoo! generated a 21% annual growth rate in market value, beating Apple, Microsoft, IBM and Oracle, as well as the NASDAQ, S&P 500 and Dow Jones. I should point out that those companies also pay dividends, but they're all in the 1-2% range, so the dividend payouts don't change the results.

Now, you can argue that some other CEO would have done better, or that the main reason for Yahoo!'s success under her tenure was the decision to invest in Alibaba, made by her predecessor, but speculation about what someone else might have done is unproductive, and she decided to stay with that investment. The bottom line is that CEOs are supposed to generate value for shareholders, and market-beating value was generated, from a company that was clearly moribund before she was hired.

You can also argue about whether any CEO is worth the millions they get, but if you judge against other CEOs she earned her money.

  3. This is just one of Zuckerberg's many con-schemes to try to stay relevant. Once you've grown a company that much, where do you go if you want to continue to grow your company and maintain your omnipotence?

I think it would be much more effective to ban courses ... that have no resale value

That is the problem here and that is the problem that I encountered ever since I started at Slashdot not too long ago. Everything is about money, the courses and textbooks. The idea behind collage, higher learning, etc is you make oneself into a better human, a "renaissance man" so to speak. The idea about school is to not make money but to learn. On the other hand colleges have to pay their administrations and can't exist without doing this. If you take out $100000 in student loans chances are it went to a good cause. The same thing is usually the case with a few acceptions for the textbooks. Once I graduate I expect to make a lot more money than editing stories here (about $17 hourly) and can pay off my student loans. Again, with help from the banks who have to make money I can pay them back at a rasonable rate.

All things considered, $2.8B USD isn't a whole lot. If Uber continues to succeed, they will be among giants such as Delta Air Lines and Greyhound but in a more local realm. These guys are WAY more efficient than the public sector transit solutions and are more efficient than the government-sponsored Taxi Cartels. Uber only needs to not be shut down to grow and succeed.

Good for facebook to take a stand against information crime. Russians installed TRUMP by hacking the American elections. With France being part of the EU it is likely their not as nearly as prepared as the US for detecting cyber intrusions. If Marie Lepen also makes it in because of the Russians it is GAME OVER for France. We therefore must have all facts vetted by fact checking experts like facebook and Snopes to be fully certain the wrong person doesnt get in this time. Breitbart is fake news as is Ben Swan. I watched both of these and was apalled at the flagrant lies and rasicm spewed by this type of media outlet. Why be exposed to it when their isnt enough time in the day to fact check on everything? I am with Ol Zuck on this one!
