This has to be one of the most ridiculous arguments I've seen. First of all:
U.S. Defense spending is less, as a percentage of GDP, than it was in the 70s and 80s. We were able to support the higher level then, why couldn't we now, especially when the US is less dependent on natural resources, like oil.
Secondly:
Money is fluid, and interchangable. It doesn't matter if the oil countries want US Dollars, Euros, Suiss Francs, or Beanie Baby Futures, as long as it's freely exchangable, then it doesn't matter. I know it fits into some people's idea that this whole thing is "(old) Europe vs. America", but c'mon, there'd be better ways to do it than this.
Of course, never mind the fact that France has, over the last 10 years, signed deals with Saddam Hussein giving them rights to 25% of Iraq's oil reserves. Or that Russia is currently owed at least $10 Billion by Iraq. That wouldn't explain those reluctance on their part to remove Saddam Hussein, would it? Of course not... Because... well... uh... George W. Bush is a Cowboy! Yeah!:p
Yeah.... try injecting yourself with that much Sarin... or VX. You'd be dead in a few seconds... compared to the rattlesnake bite where you have a reasonably good chance of not dying at all.
Rattlesnake poison is one thing... Aflatoxins are another. Aflatoxins are produced naturally by certain species of the Fungus Aspergillus, and have LD50s on the scale (around 100 mcg/kg) of Sarin, VX, and other related organophosphates.
Then there is also Ricin, commonly available in Castor beans, which grow wild in many places. When injected, Ricin has an LD50 at around 3 micrograms/kg. Plus you get the bonus of going through several days of high fever, organ necrosis, and gastrointestinal hemorrhage, before you die. Fun!
Then there's nicotine, easily available by doing an extraction on tobacco. When injected, Nicotine has an LD50 of around 1-5 mg/kg. So I guess that's a lot safer...
Some campuses have an entire building filled with books which they lend out to anybody.
Maybe if the campus libraries allowed an unlimited number of people to walk out with a perfect, full copy of a book you might have an analogy. But instead they only allow a single person to have a particular copy of a book checked out (if you can even do that) at a time.
Completely failing to acknowledge things and take them into some sort of consideration is sometimes just as bad as being actively against them.
Yes, in some cases not taking something into consideration can be done in an exclusionary manner. This is a problem if it is done on an official (or authoritative) level, when used to deny benefits to a certain group.
But in most cases (and this is one of them), non-mention just means exactly that. It wasn't mentioned. If I say that "I like Chinese and Mexican food.", it doesn't mean that I hate Jamaican food.
For some people this is a real issue. Telling them to just 'relax' kinda trivializes it, don't you think?
People need to pick their battles wisely. If someone is dedicated to fighting homophobia, then they should try to pick places where homophobia actually exists. Going around claiming "HOMOPHOBIA!" at every non-mention of the fact that some people prefer those of their own sex doesn't accomplish anything except desensitize people to any actual problems.
Homophobia is associated with an anti-Homosexual bias. The fact that girl-girl or boy-boy relations were not mentioned does not necessarily mean that the author is against any of these things.
Sure, California's scheme for "deregulation" had some major flaws, but that doesn't excuse Enron, as well as other energy corporations from committing wire fraud, to the point of almost bankrupting the state.
but it seems like the only way to really "make it" is to go the Fugazi styled DIY route so that the industry can't fuck you over...
The Music industry is a business. As with any business, don't sign anything without having a contract lawyer look at it, and if it involves budgets, go over it with someone who understands such things [i.e. an accountant].
Well, a casual observation should tell us that this can't be the case. A "free market" system has never existed to my knowledge because it is extremely unstable and prone to self destruction. However in such an ideal system, there would be no restriction on what is allowed: if company A makes a product cheaper than company B then company A would drive company B out of business unless the latter drops their prices (and hence forfeits some of their profits). Company A could then do the same and this could go on until A and B both are selling at cost with no profits.
What you've said is correct, except for one thing: Both A and B have a profit level below which it is more worthwhile to do something else. This "floor" limits the behavior that you have mentioned.
To extend on your example, as A and B are competing with each other, the amounts of profits drop, that is true. But say that A, for whatever reason, is willing to accept smaller profits than B is. Then eventually, as profits drop, B will no longer be willing to drop their prices and will leave the market. And the system is now stable.
Actually, even raising your prices after killing all your competition isn't bad either. They can set their prices to whatever the market will bear. If the prices are set too high, then more competition will develop.
Sure, sodium reacts strongly with water, but if you put a chunk of it in water, you're going to get a piece of floating metal setting the released hydrogen on fire. Nifty, but not as impressive as it could be.
That's why you need to do this with Potassium, which reacts even better. That gives you the real cool explosions.
Spam should not be regulated by the government. That said, nobody can force an ISP to carry a site, and if The Thing will not crack down on abuses under them (that go against their own stated TOS), then I'm glad that someone is cracking down on The Thing.
If RTMark wants to spam again, maybe they can go through some Chinese ISPs like the other spammers have to.
RTMark sent out spam. Unsolicited mass email. Whether it was a political rant, a parody, or "INCREASE YOUR PENIS SIZE" doesn't matter, I didn't ask for it, I didn't want it, and it still arrived in my (and many other people's) mailbox.
I sent a message to RTMark's ISP (The Thing), complaining about the message, and that it violated their Terms of Service. This isn't the first time that I have received spam from RTMark, or is it the first time that I have complained about it, and yet it had not stopped. If The Thing refused to do anything about it, or if they condoned it, then they are no better than a bunch of worthless spammers, and I'm glad that Verio cut them off.
If Pioneer 10 is spinning, it must be spinning around the axis of travel, so that the same part of the spacecraft (the antenna part) is always facing towards the sun (and earth). In this case, I don't think that the Yarkovsky effect would be applicable.
Not to mention that, at 82AU away from the sun, the amount of solar heating is negligible.
Why do you assume that the people who live in the Amazon are not able to choose their clothing/lifestyles for themselves? You may wish that some people stay nice and "natural" (perhaps you mean "primitive"?) but I'm sorry that these people who live in the Amazon are probably not as interested in living as museum displays for your pleasure.

And just to reiterated, private security guards != government authority.

My medical opinion is that this guy has a bad allergy to Pyrimidines and Purines. He probably should watch out for those Phosphorous compounds as well. I suggest he move to a place far away from these dangerous chemicals.
Let me see if this is correct:
America is at fault because it took its time entering WW2. But now America is at fault because it is being too hasty in removing Saddam Hussein.
Damn, this anti-Americanism is so confusing. Good thing I can rely on the French to tell me what's right!
"Should Open Source developers help the U.S. prepare for war with Iraq?"
The question for "Free Software" can then be:
Free as in beer?
Free as in speech?
Free as in not suffering under the thumb of a murderous dictator?

In other words, Relax.
Patently False?
Not
quite.

Where do you get a pound of sodium metal anyways?

The problem with peachtree is that it doesn't import files from Quickbooks 2002.
Farm animals such as hogs, sheep, cattle, chickens, etc. are "domesticated" animals. Sure, they're not "pets", but they are considered domesticated.
