  1. Re:Moral Rights on Directors Guild of America is Fighting Edited Films · · Score: 3, Informative

I'm pretty darn sure you're backwards on this, Jamie. Once I buy anything, period, I am free to do anything I wish to it...short of distributing copies which would be copyright infringement. Otherwise, by your logic, I'd never be able to throw away old videos, rip up magazines for recycling, write my initials on a CD with a Sharpie or tear down a statue in the yard to make way for a new garden.

When someone buys the copyright itself, then they're allowed to do all of the above, plus distribute copies.

  2. Artist integrity and censorship is irrelevant here on Directors Guild of America is Fighting Edited Films · · Score: 1, Insightful

Let's be honest...it isn't about the artists wanting to maintain their integrity and be concerned over censorship. If that were the case, they wouldn't have done business with a big studio.

That being said...and after reading the article, there is no illegal distribution going on. That is, the editing companies are not editing a video and then selling copies of the edits. They are selling the *actual videos* in an edited form. The editing companies actually own the copies they're chopping. The doctrine of first sale says they own those copies and can do as they please (short of copyright infringement).

Really, this situation isn't much different than someone buying a bunch of cases from Antec or Lian Li, adding some popular case mods and then reselling them to the public. In the case of Lian Li, the studios can actually learn a lesson - Lian Li now sells cases with window mods built-in.

...where is the incentive to try and pirate the content? Everybody that wanted it would have taped it already from the source. The key to the MPAA's future business is VALUE-ADDED content that you can't get from the TV.

Anyway, there is already enough disincentive to tape movies from TV: Commericals, including network logos in the corner; and censorship/editing. When you consider all the extra features they put on DVDs, it just makes more sense to pick up an original feature-rich copy at the store than to deal with and edited and censored for TV mess.

To further my point...I videotaped six of the 8 seasons of Red Dwarf off of PBS. I bought 2 seasons at Suncoast. At this point, I have little reason to buy the official tapes of the seasons I taped myself...moreso since they're commercial-free on PBS. However, if BBC was to come out with DVD sets of those seasons that include all sorts of extra material, I would snap them up in a second!

Of course, if Hollywood is stubborn enough to not broadcast their tripe, you can always get off your ass and volunteer to walk dogs and play with cats at your local animal shelter.

There are some good commercials worth watching if you're in the market for a particular product or the commercial is simply entertaining. Other commercials (ie those for feminine hygeine products) aren't worth it.

I've come to accept that if I'm not directly funding a channel like HBO with a subscription, then commercials are a way of life. So, they might as well try and pitch to me something I'd consider buying rather than talking about pouring blue water on things and playing tennis in white pants.

That is not the case. It is OK for children to pray in school. What is not OK is a teacher leading a prayer session.
