That's exactly what you do...just mix a bag of concrete and pour it in. A concrete truck would be overkill given that you don't have that much sidewalk in front of your house. At most you pay a local handyman a couple bucks. Either way, it's not as if sidewalks wear out every year. Plus, I'd rather hang onto that little piece of land and maintain it for the public good than have the government take it away.

  3. Re:In my experience on Ask Libertarian Presidential Candidate Michael Badnarik · · Score: 1

At least around here (NJ), the sidewalks in neighborhoods are privately owned. The sidewalk in front of each homeowner's home is part of his plot. Local laws provide that 1. you must maintain your sidewalk (ie shovel the snow) and 2. your sidewalk is considered a public easement (ie meant for the public to walk across).

There is no license. Period. You're paying to have HBO descrambled on your cable box. There are no further terms or conditions. The only thing you can't do by standard copyright law is distribute copies to other people.

The presence of broadcast or recording flags does not infer a license, either. They are inconveniences that I will route around by using hardware that I control or by cancelling my HBO subscription.

I swear to God, I'm reading so many comments on various /. threads about these ficticious "licenses" and "contracts" (not to say there aren't real licenses and contracts in certain cases) that I've come to a couple conclusions:

    1. There are a lot of ignorant people that need a basic primer in business law to tell the difference between a legitimate contract and a EULA; or

    2. The *AA's are running an astroturfing campaign to spread lies.

Over the air (commercial) radio - a joke. There are very few good stations and lots of commercials. I end up making a contribution to the commercial-free community college station in the end.

Over the air TV - Aside from PBS, there is a lot of mainstream pap. I end up paying for cable to get the History Channel, Discovery Channel and other topic-focused channels. I also subscribe to HBO for quality drama and comedy.

My 80Gb Tivo will record 80 hours (3 1/3 days) of video at "Basic Quality," which is equivalent to a low quality VHS recording (by VHS standards). Therefore, a 400Gb hard drive, using Tivo's standards anyway, will yield 16 2/3 days of video--yet they claim 28 days at that capacity. If that is the case, the picture will suck so much that you'll have to up the recording quality level and will get much less than 28 days worth of video.

Tivo gives you 2 weeks of programming data. $12/mo or $300 for the lifetime of the unit (and replacements under warranty). You can recover your $300 lifetime fee in full if you sell your Tivo on eBay (hardware value will vary).

Comcast's DVR is $10/mo not $5. I have it. The interface is frustrating to the point that I don't even bother recording things with it. I got it to be able to record High-Def shows and I end up watching most of that stuff live in the end.

In the end, I paid for Tivo once upfront and it keeps getting better. I pay for the Comcast DVR monthly and I feel like I'm being leeched for $10/month.

To use ethernet with a Series 2 Tivo, plug a USB ethernet adapter into the USB port. Series 2 is broadband-ready.

There is no easy way to pull an MPEG from a Series 2. AFAIK, the "community" is generally aware it can be done, but there is little in the way of info being published out of respect to TiVo as to not spoil a good thing.

    "Tough. Adapt or die."

In my mind, "TV channels" are another middle man that should be done away with. In a perfect world, a studio or production house should be able to sell their shows directly to cable companies, who would then put the shows offered under different categories in an on-demand type of system. As long as the commercials are included, they could sell access to the shows for about $0.25 or less (or more for commercial-free HBO programs) and use some sort of revenue splitting scheme the way Apple gets a small cut of iTunes revenue.

There is some good anime on the On-Demand system for regular TV shows, but they rarely get updated.

Oh yeah, and Comcast charges you $10/month if you want to use their DVR. Unfortunately, this is the only way for me to record HDTV shows since my Series 2 Tivo is not HD ready and Tivo is dragging ass on getting out a standalone HD model.

Right now I'm using Blockbuster's $29/month 3-at-a-time flat rate plan. The store I go to is really good at offering the videos that you request (they had Red Dwarf up on the shelves within a week of me asking for it on the request sheet!).
