The name actually has a lot longer story behind it, and once we had it and started getting popular we were just stuck with it. The idea was to make it offensive enough to keep people away...y'know, to keep the riff-raff out.;)
The name doesn't mean what you think, but I got a smile reading your interpretation of it.:)
Where's the better review? All I can see in your post is a link to Anananananand.:?
You aren't SERIOUSLY suggesting that Anand has a better review up than Hexus, are you? On a good day I'd say that is highly improbable, but when it's Hanners doing the review I'd call it much more like impossible.
I don't trust Anand since the FX debacle, their true colors showed thru.:(
After reading it all I can say is thanks for all the time and effort you put in to that, I still have trouble believing you did that all in just three days of testing!
Oh, and I'm having trouble believing about no-AA being not really noticeable...but you get the benefit of the doubt until I can get the game and check it out for meself.;)
I'm feeling bummed going thru the source code, this is looking legit and some script-kiddies are going to have a field day with this!:(
Anyone wanna bet that Valve is going to delay the hell out of Half-life2 over this? Or that it was leaked because Valve didn't release the benchmark on the 30th?
This is no great mystery and no surprise in the graphics community, this is the bloody break everyone has been waiting for! The FX's shortcomings have been known for quite some time and have been analysized/discussed to death within the quiet confines of such places as www.beyond3D.com and www.nvnews.net, in fact the latter site's mods/admins are the ones who are shutting up the remaining nVidiots who seem to still think this is some big conspiracy.
It IS a conspiracy, but entirely of nVidia's own doing and creation...their hardware simply can't do DX9 well as it was never designed to. There's many reasons for this, but it mainly comes down to nVidia tried to redefine the standards of the graphics industry and failed and now are paying the consequences for their hubris.
The only thing surprising here is the size of Gabe Newell's balls to come out and directly address this in such a fashion, and I truly respect and admire him for it. He HAD to, the game is going to come out and if he didn't customers would be blaiming him and Valve for FX's shortcomings!
I'm terribly disapointed in the coverage I've seen of this on slashdot, I really thought you folks would be able to appreciate the subtle (and not so subtle) aspects of a giant company that has been resting on it's laurels and using PR fud to make up for it's hardware's shortcomings...it's just now there is really a game coming out that will highlight this and the rest of the world seems to be noticing it.
There is excellent coverage of this at www.beyond3d.com for in depth analysis, and www.nvnews.net has the best of the fanboys/ex-fanboys discussing it. (Our team at www.elitebastards.com is still the best at keeping up with all the latest stories though...;) )
Nice explanation, care to explain how to blindside a company & community on an unfair benchmark on the same day nVidia was pimping their fraudulently inflated 3dm2k3 scores?
That wasn't the big story that day, the big story was how the 5900 FX "creamed" the 9800 Pro at a secretely released benchmark...secretely released to nVidia.
Was it a karma thing over the alpha leak? That's about the only reason I could understand/forgive.:(
...go backwards and SLIGHTLY slower than the flow so it'll run into the umbrellas at a slight slower speed. As it continues to decelerate it'll eventually lose enough speed to lose orbit & will burn up on re-entry.:)
...the lower-end versions of it soon to be released might save it...from a gamers perspective.
I've been a video card freak since I found out my old ATI xpert98 could do accelerated graphics, and just what accelerated graphics MEAN!;) I went thru about 4 generations of ATI before just recently switching over to nVidia with a couple of GF2s & a sweet-assed GF3 240/530 (thanks Zar!). I mod a couple of viddy card boards, and I've noticed one very important thing: No one but the serious crazies and the disgustingly wealthy closet-geek type (and I don't know all that many of either) buy the highest end card. Most folks spend 'tween $150-$200us on their video card if they're seriously into gaming, and if you can drop the price to the $100us mark and still give some bang you've got a run-away hit on your hands! These $400+ cards are mainly just for the review sites and the elite, me and you won't be touching them until their price drops over 50%! (We're sanish.)
The parhelia offers some neat tricks, but no real bang-for-the-buck unless you're looking for those tricks. The 128MB ATI 8500 (275/275) is probably the best value right, they really have got some great drivers out for it now; and on the nVidia side the GF4 ti4200 is gonna probably account for about 85% of all the GF4's sold (Not counting the MXs, they ain't GF4s.) and is a good contender with the 8500 for value.
I know nothing of Matrix's driver history since I've never used them, but I can whole-heartidly say that drivers aren't half of the hardware...they're a good deal more over the life of your card than the initial purchase decision itself. If Matrix has crappy drivers, wait until they actually put out some decent ones before buying!
HEY LAZY MODS! BUMP THIS PUPPY UP!!

...I ain't gonna waste my time downloading the shareware version. I'll just find a copy on a warez site somewhere where all I have to do is click on it.:)
Slashdot editors have previously said nice things about MS products, but only their hardware to the best of my knowledge.
Who doesn't think that the MS intellimouse rocks? Granted it's usually overpriced, but they generally make decent hardware. (Comment subject to change upon release of the x-box;)
"You'll lay him off and laugh when we (programmers in general) get it right. There's no reason for backups to be a problem, and there's no excuse for crashes at all."
Hmmmm, this reminds me ALOT of what micro$oft was saying when win95 came out....
....and I have just about as much faith in it.
I think I can safely speak for all the sys ops, (and ex-sys ops and future sys ops), out there when I say, "Rigggghhhhhtttt."
Ahh, so your in management eh? I used to love driving you types nuts by looking lazy, just to see how high I could get your blood pressure. One of my favorite amusements, especially since I could get away with it. I was a systems operator/fire-stomper/problem fixer for US Steel and if I wasn't doing anything, there were no problems in the department.
A perfect shifts meant about 20 minutes worth of work out of every 8 hours. Finding projects to play with on the system was a productive way to pass time, learn, and keep sharp; enjoying them and driving management nuts were just added bonus.
(I know you're trolling, but I felt like responding anyways.;)
You're right, there's nothing wrong with Netscape 3.0 I personally still use it as my primary browser. Not only is it cleaner, smaller, and faster; but it's also better security-wise. I've gotten 4 copies of the Kornakova virus and had gotten at least a dozen 'I love you' letters, but the e-mail client with Netscape 3.0 is pretty much bullet-proof from any crap like that.
It's not security thru obscurity, it's security thru obselesence.;)
BTW-I downloaded Moz.8 and I'm VERY enthused to see the finished product, it could replace Netscape 3.0 for me
If so, why are you STILL following me? ;)

My server is f-ing melting, I can't socialize with my buddies, and you're saying we're just a rinky-dink site of no importance?
Thanks, thanks a whole lot. I can just feel the love.
The product was announced three weeks ago, these are the first actual reviews of it.
This IS news.
Where's the better review? All I can see in your post is a link to Anananananand. :?

And just for the record, this is Hanners (Andy Hanley) first time breaking the new site he works at Hexus. :)
:D
He used to love crashing Elite Bastards all the time, but this is his first official time crashing Hexus.
I'm so proud of him I could cheer, he's one of the good guys.
After reading it all I can say is thanks for all the time and effort you put in to that, I still have trouble believing you did that all in just three days of testing!

The MSRP is $499us for the 6800 Ultra.
...why didn't they release the real Ultra?
The "Ultra" released today is looking like it's really the normal 6800 from it's device ID, clockspeeds, and a few other oddities.
It's a great card, no doubt about it, but I'm really curious why they decided to hold back or if they just didn't have any choice.
I'm feeling bummed going thru the source code, this is looking legit and some script-kiddies are going to have a field day with this! :(

Yes, but I still buy it if it's the best around for me for the price. Either my geeky-needs outway my moral outrage or I'm just plain lazy.
(Sorry, had to add it since I'm using my intellimouse explorer. I might be a bit of a hypocrite, but I ain't gonna be hypocriticle about it.
I haven't seen it said here yet before, and it's a damned good idea.
