I totally agree with you - the majority of the flexible keyboards do exhibit the odd behavior you mention.
There is, however, a small flexible keyboard - sold at CompUSA and maybe other places - black, round keys, that doesn't.
UNFORTUNATELY it has 5 keys that send a space character (all various sizes), two delete keys, one backspace key, and none of them in pleasant places or sizes. [all the deletes are normal small sized in slightly-odd locations, the return is the old style L flipped, except it's only half as wide as you'd expect]
damned thing. I bought it hoping that the keys sent different keycodes and I could tweak something out of it - no dice. Still good in a pinch - if you suddenly need a usb keyboard - which rarely is of any use in the server room without forethought.
people will fight tooth and nail over the stupidest most asinine things in existance around here. If you made a more solid argument about using one shaving cream over another, BAM you're a target for slander. Woops, there's your email address - oh, there's your resume - you work for foo - hmm, let's go slander foo in a business related forum or other such place.
Oh look - 15 minutes of the attackers time later, he feels better and you've just had a horridly untrue sob story posted which if you defend could only make it worse.
actually the way he grouped it - it is three things.
1> games (fun time, paced action/adventure/etc.) 2> writing papers and chatting with friends (heavy typing) 3> browsing (idle mousing, mostly click and OOooh AAaah!'ing)
I don't believe dell has restricted itself to PPC only - unlike many of the other PPC Licensees. That doesn't mean they will be making any Palm devices, just that they can. [could use same hardware too... hmmmmmm - tho screen would need to change]
but I personally will be admiring the discs in the store for a good hour a day after each shipment arrives. Expose them to air early, let people buy them and complain that they're already crippled - realize immediately how stupid this is (somehow they hadn't already).
Seems to me unless they put them in those godforsaken plastic melted hard enclosure "things" that portable MD/CD players tend to come in, they won't be able to prevent a little air sneaking in. Maybe the disc will come with a clear plastic cover to protect it from the air, and you can leave it on while using the disc:)
news flash - the coders didn't recieve all that money. Interoperatability bugs happen, there are plenty of coders working together. They're always crushing bugs and developing, but they're only human.

actually hauppage cards have come BUNDLED with drivers since they were first offered for sale. It's amazing that people don't realize this, as it's hard to use them without.
Oh, did you mean using hauppage cards under linux/bsd? They don't come bundled but it's quite possible. v4l is your friend.
Oh, did you mean using hauppage cards under osx? I suppose it's theoretically possible, desktop Apple's have PCI slots now right? I guess it's merely a matter of interest - you have to have people with the need (don't have tivo/etc.) and the knowledge, who also have the time - many times the time cost far outweighs the cost of just buying the device.
How are sony's memorysticks any more expensive than SD memory? In my experience (brick-and-mortar and online reputable) the prices are neck and neck if you take more than 3 minutes to look.
As far as SD goes - my understanding is that you can't use them at particularly decent speeds either, slower than MMC, due to the binary driver not being optimized and - naturally - being closed source.
'First the Tungsten' nothing - the Zaurus has been announced, this is a new model with improvements on the old one.
Palm stole the idea from Sharp, if there was any idea stealing. Not that it matters, AFAIK Sharp hasn't licensed RIM's "small keyboard used in conjunction with device that requires electricity" patent, so they'll soon feel the crushing blow of the court order.
Actually that's one of the things they did with the new Zaurus, increase the battery life.
Not being able to fill its 64 seems strange, are you using it or just shining it once a day and putting it back in its cradle, as you smile at it's beauty...
it seems to me that an office building could theoretically be built to fairly effectively dampen any wireless going on within it - the problem being that it would also dampen any wireless waves trying to come in. So - we lose the following:
Radio: mount an antennae on the roof, setup some radio streaming servers inside the building that people can point [insert fav. audio player] at.
CellPhones: This is a little trickier, but there once was the idea that your cell could transfer calls to your desk phone automatically. I know some cellphones offer a forwarding option, I don't know how automatic this is - perhaps you could set it to be scheduled?
TV: Shouldn't be watching TV at work, if you should be - they probably have cable anyways, problem solved.
I mean, really, the only problem you have beyond that is when you're in a large shared office building - and when you're mixing interests like that anyways you don't much damned security anyways, and maybe you shouldn't be using wireless except during that all important meeting, when you connect ad-hoc to a predetermined server that's not tied to the company intranet.
Surely I've missed something or put something inaccurate out there - so let the replys flow
1USD/5MB sounds like an amazing rate. Everywhere I've heard is the opposite, you end up paying about 5USD/1MB.
You sure you didn't mean KB or something? then it would be much worse and I'd understand you - but personally I'd be happy to pay $1/5MB (given my options now, though naturally I'd be happier with unlimited).
Re:[1] I believe the toppings were cursed, or the ice cream was cursed and the toppings were poisoned. My coworker is a S buff, so he'd be the logical choice to verify this, but in his name I question the full accuracy of your statement blah blah blah
nice ideas though, too bad I don't have any mod points... yer at 2, you'll do alright I'm sure. [3-4 by archive at least]
I for one would LOVE an LCD at work - why? because my monitor's pushed as far back as is resonable and angled, and there's still just enough room to fit the keyboard with a few inches to spare.
so, in essence, I'm stuck staring at a screen a good foot closer than I want it to be.
Didn't Isaac Asimov set out some guidelines for a fictional universe that many aspiring authors have "writ against" - they have a couple guidelines they have to follow but other than that, they're open range within his created universe.
Maybe I'm missing something - isn't that what you're referring to?
Have them login to all applicable systems first, then change their password(s) all at once.
Yeah - it's stupid, but unless the system has some ongoing authentication checking, it'll allow it. Since you need to change all the passwords at once anyway, it's not like it's "extra work" on the whole.
Yeah - there's also a better solution, but if management wants to go this route, let 'em - and show them statistics on how weak the resulting passwords are (bonus points if the passwords were stronger before)
dictionary attacks (with minor mutations) should always fail on a password, unless you're username is luser.
neverwinter nights finally got their client out for linux?
hey, it's convenient! let 'em do their jobs.
[I fucking hate that mentality]

Does the box do anything?

IIRC the ibm microdrive is a bit of a power hog.
good luck getting any device that can read from it to do so for 6 hours, while powering a display, without being plugged in.
or more importantly, can you switch it out and get as much RAM as you want to burn energy keeping powered?
hello 256mb of RAM
hello slow-ass-sync. woops
but you do make a good point, end user customization is a good thing.

It will not play DVDs to a TV.
:)
from the 'article'
"When connected to a television or PC, the device can also become a DVD player for watching movies."
I saw this on news.com a day or two ago, and noted this feature then too. Check your articles
