it's even more ignorant to think that it's more damaging to have a breach in security for 60 days than, 30, or 15. If you're going through the trouble of gaining someones login, and you actually plan to do something wrong with it, you aren't going to sit on your thumbs. Unless you're changing your password every 12 hours, the timing is relatively* irrelevant.

Consider this - I brute force your password, and there are 5 days left before your 30 day password reset. I slap in some custom sneaky aliases for your default shell that look exactly like the password changing utility, and in fact change your password - but lo and behold, it also a> logs it to a file I can read, b> emails it to me, c> insert_random_too_late_you're_already_screwed_acti on_here

good thing you reset your password, I almost got in!

    * [obviously using the same password everywhere for years sucks because you'll mistype it somewhere in an IRC channel or the wrong window or in front of someone at SOME point, and then it really should be changed - if it's a strong password, it'll be obvious that it's not just a "wrong window" IM/chat reply]

A simple switch on the side and we can change which direction it'll spin. You're right, except I've found that it's quite easy and pleasant to read a book on my palm. Admittedly you do end up reading only about 8-10 or so words per line, but it's not like it's painstaking reading - and as far as the 'advancing under thumb' you can solve both these problems by getting a reader that supports horizontal use. Throw in a clie or one handera and you surely can get 20 words (or 40+ if you go for a similar-to-standard palm bitmap font) and still retain the scrolling under thumb.

One main thing I really *really* do like about reading 'ebooks' (convert to txt then palmdoc) on my palm is that I can do it anywhere anytime - I plunk down waiting for a meeting to start, I can fire up a book... I'm sitting on 'the can', I can fire up a book and relax (always a good mental state to be in during that exercise)... those ebook readers, while nicer screens and faster, definately don't have the convenience factor down.

Realistically, you can't get a device *much* bigger than a palm IIIxe or so and expect people to actually carry the device (in pocket or on holder on belt) - so for people like me who like to have it always available, those 6inch wide ebook readers will never find themselves in my possession. "But its expensive and if it breaks ...." yadda yadda yadda - I rsync my data to my home desktop each morning before going to work, I can optionally rsync from work before I leave (but I rarely do as rarely does anything change while at work, I can just ssh to my shell account where my email is coming in to check for any important mails)

That said - it's wonderful *always* having your data with you. Yeah I have a palm, but I don't send and recieve my emails with it - and it'd be ridiculous to try with the volume I (and probably most of us) get. The fact of the matter is - I have a hard time envisioning a scenario where I trust someone so much as to plop down on their windows machine with keyboard logger and punch in all my passwords, but I'm fine jacking my laptop into their network and tunneling all my communications to my hearts content.
