  1. Main differences on Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 Reviewed · · Score: 3, Informative

    The main differences between this model and the older clamshells can be summed up as such:

    * 4gb internal hard drive (3.6gb formatted, 2.9 user)
    * Less internal ROM - 16 instead of 32 or 64 (or 128 for c860? - don't quote me on that)
    * USB Host (poorly supported)

    As most would argue, given that it's a PDA (constantly mobile) and flash memory is pretty damned cheap - AND that the hard drive isn't exactly easily upgraded . . . the hard drive is mostly a non feature. (mostly - the sd driver is a bit of arse, and binary only - so 4 gigs always in your Zaurus with the CF still open does still have advantages... but it has moving parts - so it has disadvantages....)

    So, the main feature of note over the older models is USB host. If you don't need that, you're likely better off enjoying the price cut on older models (where still available).

    Still - it would be nice to have 4gigs + CF open without having to touch that stupid buggy binary SD driver.

  2. Re:but does it on Sharp Zaurus SL-C3000 Reviewed · · Score: 4, Informative

    Performance isn't the most important thing, by far, between ROMs. That said, I would say no there's not a particular performance change between ROMs. The important difference, is the usability.

    An OpenZaurus installation (built by OE) would actually look pleasing and be functional. I have a c700 and a c760, and neither of them dares to touch the Sharp ROM.

    Unless they've made leaps and bounds - the Sharp ROM addressbook is still beyond useless, not to mention a host of other lackings in all things. The only thing Sharp ROM has going for it above OZ is full hardware support (specifically, the ok/cancel buttons on the side of the device - and the 'jogwheel' equivalent).

    However, if you just want to write text notes and read electronic books, sharprom should do you fine.

    And what is the difference between a node an an attribute? Really?

    One's a container and one's a property. If you're adding some value to an XML file - and you think it does or will ever have other properties - or its parent will ever have more than 1 of it - then it's a node. Otherwise, it's an attribute. Some people like to make everything a node to be safe - that's fine, XML is bloated anyway :)

    But it does serve a purpose, specifically because it is a standard and got the hype it needed to be recognized and accepted.

    nodes and attributes are just like nodes and leaves in traditional tree structures.

    I don't see how "fiddling with dpkg to install a plain .deb" is different than "fiddling with the cursor to install a plain .exe" - I don't run a desktop or nautilus, but I'd wager if I did I could just double-click .debs and get prompted for install/etc. If I can't - well, then I clearly don't have shit for motivation if I can't be bothered to run a simple 'dpkg -i'.

    You can't ask a person talking on a cellphone to please keep it down - because they are talking loudly because of their (crappy, free, glitzed out with glowing accessories) phone. They have to talk loud on their phone - so they should have the common decency to find a place where talking loud won't disturb others.

    When two people are talking together, there's an implicit acknowledgement that two people are physically occupying space and have the right to converse. I, as only one person, have a diminished - though not absent - right to take offense at this (conversation). It's not socially 'reasonable' to be offended by two people talking, even at normal or above normal vocal levels - so long as there is reason for them to do so. If I am bothered by it, and it's just me - then it is my social responsibility to suck it up and deal - 2 against 1. If it's even odds, in most cases most groups will suck it up and deal too. Putting others before oneself.

    When you have a single person on a cellphone doing the same, for whatever reason - then they have as much implicit right to affect, or have an opinion on, the noise level of their surroundings as anyone else. Because they are talking on a cellphone - they are necessarily less engaged in whatever is physically present or happening. This decreases their implicit social right to be an annoyance, thus elevating anything they do that could be considered 'annoying' to the stature of 'rude'. Putting oneself before others.

    I have seen people talking on cellphones in public who weren't annoying me. They're sitting in quiet areas, using a normal or quiet voice. I found nothing about it rude at all - I actually smiled.

    In short - shut the hell up. You're on a mobile phone, so go seek out somewhere where you won't be disturbing me. Chances are I'm not just standing around idly - and your chatter is pissing me off.

    [ Disclaimer: I and my wife both have cellphones, and we use them for 2 things: 1) very short conversations for meeting up / anything timely and important / etc. - under a minute any time, 2) for long distance calls when in the privacy of our home. I keep mine on vibrate, and hers is on the quietest ring she can hear from inside its perch in her purse. I don't consider my cell actions rude, and I am conscientious of others. ]
