Again, this misconception, that Microsoft bought Apple. No, they didn't - they bought 150 million worth of AAPL shares but even then, Apple had net worth of over 4 billion dollars. As you can see, they were not in danger of being bought out. Also, Microsoft has liquidated those shares (at a tidy profit mind you), so Apple is completely un-tainted by it now. In fact, in case you haven't been following Slashdot recently, they're competing with Microsoft again.

Plus we know (and I say this as a simple statement of fact), the Chinese are excellent imitators. I predict rapid progress.

Yes. This happens with AFP-mounted drives too. I file a bug report with every point release of the operating system and I get the same response "We know about it". It must be a serious issue or they woulda fixed it by now. It's a real black eye on an otherwise exceedingly stable and usable (in my hands at least) operating system.

I've managed to figure out that the system is trying to re-establish communication with the drive, but it just fails to ever throw in the towel. Interestingly, when this happens, all carbon-based applications seize up, but Cocoa-based apps and all CLI applications continue to be functional.

If I could only find out what process what responsible for the hang, maybe we could kill -9 it with extreme prejudice and not have to force a reboot, but I've had no luck with that.

The Newton had a personal web server written from scratch as far back as 1996. I improved it from 1998 to 1999 and released it to much fanfare, including such features as built-in HTTP-based instant messenging and Newtonscript server-side includes. Heck, some guys with wireless modems in the bay area were able to use it to serve wirelessly. One guy liked it so much, he featured it in Wired mag (when Wired was still cool). The code was released under the GPL in the summer of 1999 and it's been taken and used for rather extensive development. Check out http://npds.free.fr/ for details on the continuing story of the earliest (and perhaps the coolest) handheld web server.

The biggest difference that I have notices is the flexibility. The are many other changes as well, dir structure, shell options, program invocation, etc.. but as I seid the biggest difference I noticed was flexibility. With BSD it is "you" BSD and you can make it do what you want. With OS X it is Apples BSD, designed to do one thing and allow only limited functionality if that one thing is not what you are interested in.

Bullcrap! With the developer tools installed (a free download, mind you), I have de novo developed and/or ported software to do a whole host of UNIX-based DNA sequence manipulation tasks. These were traditionally big-iron programs in the past but with 500 Mhz of processor and 256M RAM, I can crunch genomes with the best of them. I don't think Apple had this task in mind specifically when they sent me the OSX beta, but nevertheless, it seemed to be readily adaptible. How was it you were defining "flexible" again?

  20. Re:Compatibility with FreeBSD on Apple to Include BSD in WWDC · · Score: 1

    Usually, it's fairly easy.
The problems I've had with the public beta have centered around the fact that Darwin was missing a few libraries and had sort of a goofy threading implementation. Also, a lot of config scripts don't recognize the darwin-1.2-powerpc machine/os type so sometimes I have had to tweak that manually. However, most of these problems are already fixed or will be fixed real soon now.
As for the shell prompt.. it doesn't use bash by default (since bash is GPL). However, there's nuthin stopping you from using it.
All in all, it feels like a pretty clean, pure UNIX. When starting Darwin development, I had experience using NetBSD and OpenBSD, and it was a pretty easy switch for me to make.
