    They don't need to go to court. Just look what they've done with voice recognition technology. Every year a journalist will tell you that Microsoft gave them this demo of automatic voice recognition technology that required no training and worked perfectly. Every year Microsoft will fail to sell a product that does this, and so will everyone else. Why? Cause the big boys are scared shitless of patent lawsuits, and you simply can't get funding for a startup where there are Microsoft patents that even slightly cover your ideas. It really is a nuclear weapon.

    I believe the purpose of these anti-discrimination laws when it comes to renting property is to stop segregation. If you have all italian neighbourhoods and a non-italian wants to rent there, if the landlord is free to, he is likely to refuse to rent the property as it is in his financial interests not to upset the status quo.

    Wow. Mundie has moved up in the world hasn't he?

    I remember a few of my research associates quitting their academic positions to go work at Microsoft. They quickly discovered that any respect they had in the field quickly evaporated. It was a tough time for them.

    What I gotta wonder is, knowing that the head of the research department at Microsoft is nothin' but a marketting shill, how could expect serious academics to treat you any different?

    Well, yes, obviously. Point is, racism is not just about "I hate those fuckers so I don't want them in my property".. people can have reasonable expectations about other races which they simply don't want to deal with. It's still racism of course.

    I hear that dumping massive amounts of food scraps and oil down the sinks every day for 6 months will just completely destroy the property. It will smell so much it is unrentable, and the only way to fix it is to completely replace all the waste water plumbing.. you can't possibly take a security deposit big enough for that.

    One could say the same thing about looking for a tenant. I know guys who own investment property and simply refuse to rent to asian families because, according to him, they all dump cooking scraps and oils and shit down the drains which clogs and breaks them (and he then has to pay to fix it). Is this racist? Well, it's certainly an over-generalization.

    sometimes you just like to know that it is working.

    I wonder if average users of AV software look at their "quarantined files" and do a rough calculation of how much each of them cost..

    "Hmm, I paid $60 for AV software this year and I've had a grand total of 4 files quarantined.. that's $12.50 per file."

    I guess not, as 99% of people probably have zero files quarantined, not counting the false positives (I know I do).

    I remember 5 years ago walking around my comp sci lab proclaiming to people:

    Why bother taking the risky path of creating new products yourslef when you can sit back and rely on other companies? "We let other companies take the risks and charge them royalties or acquire them; why on earth would we risk our own cash?" Call me crazy, but that's the way things are now. If you want to do anything truly innovative, you go work at a startup.
