Has the absence of a powerful totalitarian threat in the world helped the violations of civil rights become more acceptable? I most often here the erosion of rights as related to the threat, real or not, of terrorism.
I put forward another cause. When agencies such as the KGB and the Stasi were threatening, citizens of the free countries could define their freedom, at least in part, in opposition to such governments. We saw the direction things could head, and we fought harder against moving in that direction. Now, people are forgetting how horrible it would be to live in such a society. Are we moving toward more surveillance because that balancing reference point is gone?
Thanks for pointing out that supernatural beliefs extend far further into Buddhism than just Pure Land, and thanks to the grandparent for pointing to Pure Land in the first place.
I used to have the typical wrong Western belief that Buddhism is free from supernaturalism. Then I read some sacred texts and even met some Buddhists. Although there are strains of Buddhism that de-emphasize the supernatural, none of what I encountered lacked for supernatural beliefs, and from my Western perspective, the beliefs were totally and unacceptably weird.
Similarly, there are strains of Buddhism that de-emphasize agency, but plenty of Buddhists are all about agency. Tantra is hard to separate from agency. So is shooting chakra out of your head. So is praying for some Buddha to save you.
Too many Westerners look at Buddhism and hopefully project their wishes into it. They might be able to find what they want, but when there is so much in so many varieties of Buddhism that violates their ideas, it's wrong, if typical, to define the version they like as the real Buddhism and blindly ignore the rest.
The problem is not the IRS. The problem is Oracle. Oracle did not fully fund the contest. I am quite sure that Oracle employs accountants and lawyers whose familiarity with the tax code permitted understanding this problem in advance. Oracle could provide enough cash to cover the spaceflight and to cover the taxes.
Why do you think I complained about lack of HSDPA?
An EV-DO version would be nice. Even in terms of international standards, however, the iPhone would be a dog if it were on sale now. It will be one even more so by the time it goes on sale.
HSDPA is currently available in 39 countries, on 64 networks. Although 3G is not available in most countries, this protocol is a relatively simple upgrade where UMTS is already deployed. 121 networks have committed to upgrade to HSDPA in 55 countries.
This phone appears to be EDGE, not HSDPA. That this supposedly revolutionary device runs on Cingular's old 2G network is pitiful. EV-DO is out there and working in many places on Sprint and Verizon. Even rear guard Cingular has rolled out 3G in some cities. Color me disappointed.
Does the ionosphere act as a reflecting surface? If so, the signal bounces off the ionosphere at an angle. The tangential component of the Poynting vector should not change, and it is the important one for triangulation. Unless the ionosphere has a weird or highly variable geometry, triangulation should work. Can an ionosphere bounce really make a signal from the east look like it was coming from the west? I would be very surprised.

Nokia makes a variety of terrific phones that make it to market in buggy versions, make it to market for only weeks before being pulled, make it to market everywhere outside North American or never make it to market at all.
A 3G N series phone would be great, but I do not know when one will ever become available.
1. 3G (Rumors are that the Apple phone will be only 2G, but they're only rumors. A 2G iCell would be a disappointment.) 2. Bluetooth 3. Addressbook 4. Calendar 5. iSync 6. POP & IMAP email client 7. Web browser
I have been unable to find a satisfactory phone for the American market. A Treo might come close, but its lack of good multitasking is hard to take after having a multitasking phone. Excellent S60 phones exist... (overseas|as prototypes).
I probably am a member of a niche market. The market has no good products currently. Apple could get all of it with a decent offering.
Your (yes, you're) just scared to look into the Hellmouth.
Don't you know that the Intarwebs changed everything? Then Columbine changed everything. Then 9-11 changed everything. Then I stopped paying enough attention to television to know what changed everything in the last five years, but I'm sure that something changed everything quite a few times since I stopped paying attention. Judging from JonKatz, puppies changed everything.
The current nomenclature is type 1 and type 2. Roman numerals are out of favor to describe the kinds of diabetes. The recommendation from the American Diabetes Association came out in 1997. See here.
What are the wrongs of Bill Gates? For all the carping about his evilness, it is difficult to find an overview of his sins. What things has he done that were bad? Is there a succinct resource cataloging his misdeeds?
A majority means greater than half. It does not mean 51%. It does not mean 50% plus one vote.
Winning the presidency does not require a majority of the popular vote. It requires winning the electoral college. Winning the electoral college votes of a state does not require a majority. A plurality is sufficient.
Consult with a psychiatrist if you have not. I am not a doctor, and I do not know whether you would meet the criteria for clinical depression. I suspect that you might, though. Depression makes pain worse, and treating it may help some. Some anti-depressants also have the benefit of pain reduction. If you receive treatment at a cutting edge clinic, you probably are already aware of these connections. Others may not be, however, and the disconnect between doctors who treat pain and doctors who treat mood can lead to unnecessary suffering. I wish you well.
I know that a bothersome side effect for many taking opiates is constipation. While this side effect is pretty much so tied to the drug's actions that it simply cannot be avoided, there are strategies for coping with it. Make sure your doctors are active in pursuing strategies to deal with the GI problems, too.
Finally, patches that deliver opiates through the skin are an alternative to pills when you cannot keep pills down. I do not know how widespread use of them is, but it's another thing to investigate. At the least, they might provide a backup treatment when pills are not a good option.
Wow. You have my admiration. Weight loss is so hard because it requires lifestyle changes. Coupled to depression, it is even harder.
I do not know whether depression manifests as physical pain, but I am sure about the phenomena being related. Depression makes pain worse, and pain makes depression worse. Sleep is in the mix, too. Irregular sleep makes depression and pain worse. Depression and pain make sleep more difficult. They are all so coupled that it is difficult to parse causes and effects.
What you have done is commendable. It is difficult in ways that are difficult to recognize because it requires so many examinations and changes. How do I eat? How do I sleep? How do I spend my waking hours outside work? How do I make permanent changes to all of these aspects of my life to align them with my goals. I wish you the best in continuing it.
I want to think that the world is fair and that everyone in it is honest and good.
Evidently, you want to be a very stupid child. A child's life is restricted, and I felt that adults and older children were mistreating me. It can be very frustrating to be a child because children are often acutely aware of bad actions, and they have very little power. I also knew other children my own age who were quite mean.

Somebody made bullshit claims regarding religion?
Imagine that with a hat on.
The robot can chew gum, but not at the same time.
I hope they serve fried chicken at the trial.
but I think we all saw this one coming.

MySQL is cheap. Oracle is cheap bastards.
Fewer, tool.

What do you think a war is?
No genetic engineering is necessary.
Plenty of people in wars are intelligent, but you better know that the least able among us bear more than their share of the agony.
