  2. Re:It's just getting worse... on Is The U.S. No Longer The Choice For Freedom? · · Score: 1

No, the electoral college is not what makes the US "not a democracy", it's only a small part of it. Our "representative republic" is organized so that the people have no direct say in government, it's the elected representatives who do. This is why the US isn't a true democracy.

In a true democracy, the people would vote for and decide every issue, and there really wouldn't be any officials to begin with. Now you can see why true democracy is feared maybe?

And finally, you're saying that the voters in the northeast and on the west coast should have less say in the government because the "rest of the nation" takes up "the vast majority of the land mass?" This is utter bullshit. I don't care where a candidate gets his votes from, it's the number of votes that count. Every person is equal in our country, remember?

And one insane hobbit isn't worth saving the world?

No one else volunteered to take the ring, and anyone who held any amount of power would be corrupted by it. Gollum was an example how hobbits could wield the ring discretely (he used it to kill orcs underneath a mountain!). Frodo was the perfect choice for a ringbearer. Anyone else would have been overcome with desire to wield the ring openly against Sauron (and in a matter of hours find themselves surrounded by Sauron's millions of orcs).

  8. Re:Remember... Absolute power corrupts absolutely! on "Lord of the Rings" Quicktime Preview Available · · Score: 1

Yes, that's accurate. Frodo planned to take the ring for himself just as they reached the cracks of Mount Doom. This gives meaning to all the constant reminders how everyone (Sam, Gandalf, Aragorn, Bilbo..) could not bring themselves to killing Gollum, and Gandalf's foreshadowing in Rivendell that Gollum had some part to play before the end.

  9. One correction on "Lord of the Rings" Quicktime Preview Available · · Score: 1

Sauron watched his lord and master Morgoth brought down by the Valar, not by Elves and Men. Morgoth utterly defeated the Noldor, and Beleriend was destroyed, and men were terribly weak in the Elder days. His victory was nearly complete when Earendil sailed west to ask the Valar for aid. The Valar came, and almost entirely destroyed Morgoth's servants. Morgoth was thrust outside the world, into the void. Sauron was summoned to Valinor, but he hid in Middle Earth. What you are thinking of is when Sauron rose in power after he had destroyed Numenor (indirectly, by causing the Numenoreans to assail Valinor). The men of the west who settled in Middle Earth, Aragorn's descendents, allied with Gil Galad's Elven forces. Together they defeated Sauron, but he was not destroyed (Isildur kept the One Ring, as we all know). Elrond states that the reason they cannot assail Sauron by force is that Elves have greatly diminished in power and number. The majority of the High Elves have already sailed to Valinor, there are only the small remnants in Lorien and Rivendell. And I'm not so sure that the power of the high elves can be "detected", but the orcs thought Sam was an Elven lord because he had fought against Shelob and won. I could be wrong about this, though.

Even though those letters make linux users look bad, my lasting impression after reading it (and seeing the link from the main page) is the immaturity and lack of responsibility of mindcraft to display letters by people who actually wrote something worthwhile.

In any crowd you can find losers, especially considering the thousands that must've written in. I'm sure there were a number of "YeAh bizn1tch, NT ruLeZ, YOu RoCk." letters as well.

Others might not think so, but I think it makes mindcraft look worse to publish these letters. They're once again trying to undermine linux by making the users look like losers.

  13. Why I, and possibly others, are worried about this on Leo DiCaprio in next Star Wars? · · Score: 1

Star Wars is an epic fantasy with a deep, interesting and passionate story. It is the story of a world we don't live in and the wonderful and horrible things that happen there.

Annakin is an EXTREMELY intelligent person. Leo, well...I'm sure he PASSED high school...or did he drop out to make films?

I don't want this woman-idol playing the part of the character who is to most of us both the ultimate evil and the ultimate good.

If you have ever read a fantasy, if you find them invigorating and thrilling and if they become a part of your life forever, you would know why most of us would be devastated if Leo was cast as Annakin.

Ever read Lord of the Rings? Imagine a movie was made and Adam Sandler was cast as Gandalf...a slight exaggeration, yet it brings out the same emotion of absolute horror. I for one will do anything to keep Episode 2 from turning into more of a kiddie show than Episode 1. Jar-Jar i disliked, yet I recognize his importance to the movie, and at the second viewing of the film he was not quite as annoying.. Leo, I'm afraid, just isn't acceptable at all.

A few people, probably students or people with full time jobs UNRELATED to their web site, are providing us with a service for FREE. Why would a private web page be as good as a commercial when someone is hired FOR MONEY to work all day on it? Why would their hardware be as good as a company who can afford the newest technologies and the highest bandwidth?

I see that you are trying to say Linux isn't as good as Windows. I pity you for thinking this. There are thousands of people hacking the kernel for free, and right now it is more stable than Windows will probably ever be. But the point is there are THOUSANDS of people hacking the kernel, there are a few people running this web site for FREE. Why do you expect them to have enough bandwidth for thousands of people in a few hours?

I don't understand why you are carrying on this arguement, you obviously have no respect for the hard work they put into the site. When it comes down to it, you are ruining it for all of us, because you are simply discouraging people from ever doing something for the good of the community. You are probably one of the people who flamed scoop when he revamped freshmeat. You know what: next time you dislike something, just ignore it. When you get out to the real world, you're going to realize that you don't go around criticizing the good Samaritans of society. You start pointing out everybody's flaws and someone is either going to beat you silly or you're never going to get a job (or friends).

Listen, just calm yourself before you reply. Don't flame or swear, but rationally think this over. You are the one who is incorrect here; just accept it. It is immature and inconsiderate to critize someone such as the e.themes.org team. Now close your browser, count to ten, and seriously think about changing your attitude before posting again.
