One this I have -never- seen is confirmation that the PPC970 is in production. I've seen some pics on IBM's site of a chip that they claim is the 970 (kind of funny, the chip is posed with feathers), but no official press releases about mass production, or of others recieving even samples of the 970. Someone out there must know whether or not such an annoucement has been made by IBM.
I've seen formats like imax, omnimax, imax dome, imax hd, imax magic carpet... can someone give a rundown of all the different formats and which are compatible with which screens. In Pittsburgh we have an imax dome type theater, which is advertised as an omnimax theater.
The parent raises the issue about which I often wonder. "Why doesn't Apple even have the option of a multi-buttoned mouse?" (emphasis mine). I'd like to use a multibutton mouse designed by Apple, as I think it's aesthetic and ergonomic value would be superior to third party pointing devices.
This is purely speculation based on a few rumor sites (e.g. macrumors.com, macwhispers.com), but I'm hoping this delay might reflect the introduction of Panther as the first 64 bit MacOS, along with the introduction of 64 bit hardware (Power 970 based) for developer use. I can dream, can't I?:D The time frame seems plausible if you assume the rumor sites have accurate information.
I'd like to use freenet, but I can't. I can't risk the possibility, however remote, of having child porn cached on my computer. I have too much to lose.
seriously, please stop giving jerkcity a bad name by using it in trolls. it's one of the few comics on the internet that are actually funny, and i don't want to see it become associated with slashdot trolls.
The US government loves the low bidder. If an open source software candidate is free, and support costs are comparable to a closed source alternative, open source is going to win every time. I know of at least one example where the government's stinginess has backfired when pursuing the low bidder, but that's top secret. The difference with software, I think, is that the lower cost alternative is often better!
I'd like to hear more about this. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?threadi d=21160 There seems to be some speculation about an Apple tablet... a small, white plastic enclosure about 5 by 7 inches is currently being produced by Apple. Maybe we'll see these 8 inch Kodak OLEDs as the display? Are OLEDs touch sensitive or able to accept magnetic stylus input?
Why have digital camera displays been so small traditionally? Most models I've seen have had 1.5 or 1.8 inch displays. This 2.2 inch display is a nice boost, but there seems to be a lot of unused room (especially to the right of the screen, and below it, in the space occupied by a largish Kodak logo) on the back of this camera. I'd like a bigger screen to preview and review shots better. Is battery life the main concern that's keeping screens small?
i was thinking of getting a gba and one of the main selling points was the extra functionality you get when connecting with various games to a gamecube. does anyone else think the new form factor of the gba sp would make for a poorer console controller than the gba?
i don't know if i should... try asking in #vorbis on irc.xiph.org. i think attempts to get it included have been greeted with silence. also look into portalplayer.com . they supposedly designed the ipod software for apple, and might be a potential target for an ogg zealot petition. it seems like wishful thinking, however.
two competing projects! this is always good to see in the community. are any of the authors reading these stories? care to comment on the strenghs/weaknesses of your own project and the competition? what kind of problems are you running into?
no, there is no ogg player for the ipod as of yet. it doesn't sound like there will ever be, either, based on the murmurings i've heard on irc.xiph.org. what a shame. the ipod is a really great box, and has plenty of power to decode oggs (dual ARMs if i'm not mistaken).
qtcomponents is one of two projects to play oggs of which i'm aware. the other project is at http://illadvised.com/~jordy/ perhaps the previous story was about jordy's plugin. regardless, it's good to have a little competition. i think i submitted this story a day or two before this story appeared: http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/12/25/ 1532236&mode=thread&tid=141
still writes at just 2x, but now the drive is "compatible with 4x dvdr media"
"Will this update enable my 2x SuperDrive to write at a higher speed? This update enables you to read from and write to the new media, but it does not increase the speed of the drive. In fact, the updated 2x SuperDrive writes to this new media at 1x. So to obtain the highest performance from your 2x SuperDrive, we recommend that you continue using 2x DVD-R media just as you do today."
someone (possibly me) really needs to organize a emailing campaign to let phish know that some of us would like to see these very same files available in ogg (lossy, equivalent to mp3) and flac (lossless, equivalent to shn) formats. here's a great opportunity to promote our favorite royalty free media formats!

contains lucid commentary on the space program as well!
There's selective pressure against larger genomes (ones with antibiotic resistance genes) since these take longer to replicate. Thus if you have spontaneous resistance to a drug, for instance, a duplication in a gene encoding a protein that pumps the antibiotic out of the cell, removing the antiobiotic from the media will cause the gene duplication to collapse.
I think this can be best summed up by this saying: "Never argue with an idiot. They'll just drag you down to their own level, and beat you with experience."
This site is dedicated to open source QuickTime development for popular open source audio and video codecs. We are currently working on Ogg Vorbis, an audio codec developed by Xiphophorus, and MNG, an animation video codec.
We have just begun the project, expect many changes over the next few weeks. We will offer a site for developers, as well as one for end-users interested in using our software. At the moment, some areas of our site are not yet implemented.
The Ogg Vorbis component does not work with QuickTime 6. It turns out that QuickTime doesn't support audio with packets of varying durations (only constant duration audio is supported.) This limitation is not in the documentation. This limitation exists in QuickTime 5 as well (and it's not in the documentation there either). But QuickTime 5 did fairly well when playing back audio with varying durations. QuickTime 6 will give you a few pops and clicks when trying to play an Ogg Vorbis file. Ask Apple to fix this problem and some others.

I've been trying for years to make the wheel better. All I've come up with so far is "rounder"

Not organic as in biological tissues, but rather organic chemistry. Hydrocarbons et al.

i'd rather not transcode my oggs.

here's another attempt to use ogg with quicktime.
http://qtcomponents.sourceforge.net/

Someone (besides me) should get in touch with them and recommend adding an ogg player alongside the mp3 player!
