What, are suddenly computers some form of high fashion? I just want to use emacs, firefox and perl and not have to mess with X or anything else regarding the system to get there.
The zealotry, and the "more money = guaranteed higher quality" is where I get my reasoning(yes, there is the "you get what you paid for", but expense != guaranteed quality). Well as far as the fashion is concerned, that's a distant 4th after performance, quality, and service.
If you happen to be the kind that isnt in the zealotry mindset but concentrates on the insides, you probably wouldnt care what was at the other end of the screen.
I can buy 3 brand new powerbooks for the price of one of those IBM workstations. And they STILL run X. Mind that AIX is in the same vein as OS/X as not being free (as in beer) as Linux/[Free|Open|Net|Dragonfly]BSD, but it does have X, GNOME, GCC, and has Firefox- with the option for Linux compatibility. I knew somebody was going to bring it up, so I did put up the other links for the not-so-new-but-still good hardware.
I'll just sum it up in this phrase - Apple if you have no care to break out the screwdriver, pSeries/RS/6000 if money/weight arent a trouble for you when new.

Expensive when new, yes. But it supports open source and open standards without the elitist image. And there are otherplaces if you cant stand the expense.
The only problem is that they've dropped it from CVS in 2003 last time I checked. If it didnt have memory leaks when it did work, it worked quite well for what it was.
And in the next, the military sets off the India/Pakistan nuclear dispute again. The rest of India is then shown the result of what happens with outsourcing, lost jobs.
Sure, it's a step in the right direction, but the tether must be cut if the students are to take this more seriously. Is the entertainment industry just wanting money(cut the tether, they still get the money), or do they enjoy sick pleasure in suing people?
Surprised in all of these posts, that nobody has suggested use of targeted use of EMP, to take these things out if they bother too many of you. The only thing is that this kind of use of EMP might be a bit too indiscriminate for just the camera though.
repost due to apple fanbots I know I'll be flamed to a crisp by the iPod-weilding overlords here, but am I the only one to ask: what's the big deal? So, iPod drops a couple of buttons and looks like a mini; so what? Dropping a couple of buttons and/or adding buttons is not a radical design change. Why's everyone in a frenzy over this little crumb from Apple?
The barrier to use of the OLED's is really the cost compared to conventional LCD's, and that also counts that OLED's have somewhat of a lessened life to them. Once they get this down, then you'll probably see more on the bandwagon for OLED (If they can be made to last at least 30 years, you can at least be competitive with conventional LCD with durability as well as price).
Here's another issue. Players who detract from the overall experience. Espicially when game administration refuse to do anything about it. Not a case of 'can not', cases of 'will not'. Albeit, some games are adopting tougher policies on cheaters/assholes and are cracking down on them. Good. Good for them. More of you should be doing it.
Obviously, some people dont "just play the game" in mmorpg's. It gets to a point where you just suck it up, wait for the next fix and use that gift in disguise. The games that have gone paranoid have one sign, *buster. If you hadnt complained about it and started just using the bug in the MMORPG, then the world and the game world would be better off. If you want your purist world, go code it yourself, since you dont care for critics, only the rabid at the mouth fanboy purists with your cd key policy. As it should be said, I am root, you and your code bows before me lest it be forcibly changed in memory to reflect my will, even if for multiplayer games.
There are alternatives. Sure, you might not be able to get them brand new for reasonable prices, but that and the higher end of the older RS/6000 series(yep, they have 64bit models, and they arent just limited to the lowerend powerpc processors) do bring a decent alternative that is affordable (and can run opensource software if you have to ask). The only thing you wont get is chrome, but you'll get a well-built true to UNIX machine with many options, and rock-solid stability.
Am I the only person here who thinks that an iMac G5 is no good? Well, when you can get a POWER based system without the chrome tax and true UNIX, the G5 ends up being no good. If anything, the people who clamor for a lowend headless POWER3/POWER4 system ought to look this direction, since they've been around for ages. The only things you'll leave behind are the zealots and the Apple chrome case.
Well, it seems that a good deal of people dont mind getting their fix if it's cisco and others similar, but if it's anyone else like Storagetek it seems to be fair game for applying the flame. It's gotten to the point where companies are starting to tout the lack of the "drug dealer" businesss model, even if it's just Adtran. The only thing is that Adtran and the like need to be able to beat cisco at its own game, to look like a real contender in networking equipment so that the drug dealers are forced to scale back or drop their efforts.

If I pay one of my specialists extra because I think he outperforms the rest, I have to pay all specialists extra. Equal rights stuff. This effectively means that you basically can't reward people individually. You are always rewarding a group of people. Effectively this leads to job-titles you only find in Dilbert, because this gives you the possibility to reward individuals who care, work overtime when needed or just perform in an extraordinary way (like not laughing at a customer when he says that his core business runs on windows and such...).
If not for the other things, this wouldnt be half bad if it were executed properly and if you didnt have the runaround you described(Retitling) - then I'd not mind seeing this in the States. This would make people think twice about hiring someone.
And the best of them.... as an employer I have to pay the salary of my workers if they get ill. And that is no problem. But I also have to keep on paying them, even if they can't work because of own decisions. And that can last two complete years. So, if one of those guys crashes his car with 200 km/h during holidays, I end up paying for his treatment, including two years of salary.... think about Skiing, Bungeejumping, etc... awww.
Well, this one you deserve, since this one gives the right benefits to the right side(keeps you from going evil). Especially with all those Enron/WorldCom scandals, those executive parachutes would be shot down by the workers who got shafted before the creditors get a bite.
It just makes you (and us) outsource everything to places where the law is a bit more normal.
I guess youlike slave labor and/or like working for them. No thanks, I'll choose saner companies (yes, that I stands for International, but they dont pride themselves in it)service over some company who gloats about sends off work to thesebozos. And if no job is god given, it's going to take a real axe to the board room to stop the insanity you suggest. Yes, a real axe, and yes, Virginia, heads will roll, with careers following suit.
Except India doesnt have a good chunk of another nation that'd turn it into a bloody parking lot given the chance and the ammunition to do so. India's just lucky that they had corporate sponsors to stop the well needed nuclear exchange between them and Pakistan.

I have no problem with kids trying to fuck the system. Hollywood is a corrupt, over-priced, organized-crime-under-written, drug-fueled, Zionist-owned source of 95% crap movies. They don't deserve anything.
It gives me the warm tinglies to think that there are still kids out there willing and able to thumb their noses at the establishment, which is trying to subdue them with Anti-depressants, poisonous food, mind-programming out the wazoo, and the glorious prospect of adulthood slavery.
If you weren't rebellious when you were young, then you might as well have been dead. 'Good' kids were boring, dense and dull-witted, and what little sparkle of life they may have had is generally erased by the System as they grow up. Kids are not designed to sit quietly in rows and ignore their impulses to explore and push boundaries set by bitter old farts.
But I'm betting that you probably did bend the rules for yourself when you were fifteen. And good for you, if you did!

If you strip the keychecking, it wont matter anymore who's got the machine or the key, now everyone and their friends can play that disk.
They arent the good guys if you're the FCC
At least you can do something about the cop and have them identifiable to you versus some random entity that hides behind a camera.

Surprised also, that the ARRL hasnt gone full blast against this one, since this would be a good case for smacking this kind of interference down.
And unless I dont see something right here, that's definitely overkill as well. Whatever helps hunting shouldnt be held back, no matter what.
